Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Announces
Mortal Kombat X esports Competitive Series and $500,000 USD Prize Pool

Following the Successful ESL Pro League Seasons, the Expanded Program Offers More Ways to Compete and Win Playing the Latest in the Legendary Fight Game Franchise

Burbank, Calif. – March 30, 2016 – Coming on the heels of the second pro league finals, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced an expansion of Mortal Kombat X esports by launching a new competitive series in April that includes the ESL Mortal Kombat X Pro League Season 3 and the ESL Challenger Cup, as well as official sponsorships of local tournaments across North America and Europe. The total prize pool for the program is $500,000 USD and with new characters now available to play in the recently released Mortal Kombat XL, the time has never been better for fans across the globe to compete and win while enjoying the best selling fighting game from NetherRealm Studios.

“Mortal Kombat has always been about friends going head-to-head in ‘couch competition.’ With Mortal Kombat X, these players now have multiple ways of jumping into the tournament scene to prove their skills and win cash,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios and co-creator of Mortal Kombat. “This is the biggest commitment we’ve made to the esports scene and with our newly enhanced online experience, we’re looking forward to seeing the intense match-ups at the various tournaments we’re supporting.”

The third season of the ESL Mortal Kombat X Pro League begins April 3 with the best players from around the world facing off for supremacy during an eight-week online season. Sixteen finalists across North America, Europe, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and for the first time, Latin America, will convene June 12 in Burbank, Calif. for a live showdown in front of a studio audience. PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system players will be fighting to win a piece of the $200,000 USD prize pool, which will be distributed among the eight finalists, granting more players than ever a chance to earn a share of the prize.

The ESL Mortal Kombat X Challenger Cup kicks off April 2 and offers an all-new way for PlayStation®4 system and Xbox One gamers who are not competing in the ESL Pro League to battle online for cash and prizes. Open tournaments across North America, Europe, CIS and Latin America will be held weekly through the end of June, with monthly finals to be streamed live.

Additionally, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios will continue to support local tournaments across North America and Europe with sponsorships and contributions to prize pool funding.

Fans can continue to show their support for Mortal Kombat X esports by purchasing the Blue Steel Sub-Zero or recently released character skin via the PlayStation®Store or Xbox Marketplace. A portion of the proceeds goes towards supporting Mortal Kombat X tournament prize pools.

I honestly don't think any game has ever made me feel robbed more than MKX, I legit feel like they stole my money it was so broken and unfit for purpose so I'm really pissed at this clown, it's a shame Steam refunds weren't a thing back then.

For you.
I don't think Ed can get a PC version through the suits.

I blame this more on WB, than Ed.

But Ed is the twat trolling, not WB.

Yep. Not only they steal your money, they laugh on your face about it.

Let's dispense of the fiction that Ed Boon doesn't know what he's doing; he knows exactly what he's doing.

That level of trolling is just disrespectful. Surely he's aware his tweets really suggested something PC related. I don't have the game for PC, but it just makes me mad.

On the flip side, I feel like this means MKX will probably still be getting support in 2016. Seems like they want to keep this game relevant, which is great.

Neither do I and pretty much this. He shouldn't have RT'd and replied to that fan saying 500K copies on PC. It's just sad to see a small but emerging platform for fighting games being bullied like this. Hope all the PC-only folks don't lose faith in the entire genre because of one or two bad apples like this. Also, dunno where the upcoming release of the MAC version falls in? MK9 wasn't out on MAC right? Going by WB practices of external port houses for MAC versions of their games, it's obviously Feral Interactive. Releasing it now w/o the latest content offered on their primary platforms? Don't know how that's gonna work out.

But yeah, other than that pretty hyped for both, the support and the scene in 2016. People already hyping up Sonic Fox lol. SFV, KI, MKX and quite possibly KoFXIV and T7 by this year . Good times ahead.

All said, I thought of double dipping this on PC to play with friends here locally who don't own consoles. Guess I'm just sticking with the PS4 version now. It's not like you care anyway, WB.

WB trolled the entirety of the PC platform with Arkham Knight though. he's under their badge so it's best just to avoid anything put out by WB now.

Honestly think WB is done with PC as a platform as everything is too much of a disaster for them.

Ed got out there and said that PC version was going to be "as good as the [console versions]' before it came out, openly lying about the quality of that port. It was trash.

Dude gives zero shits, allowing that PC port to launch on fire and then not even pushing for Kombat Pack 2 and the rollback update after the PC version sold 500k is just fucked up. If he gave a shit about the PC community he would've said something by now but he's too busy trolling it instead.

When I got MKX on PC they were already on pretty thin ice with me after MK9 and Injustice were pretty crappy. I had already decided I'll never buy another NRS fighting game, but this kind of behavior definitely helps me cement that principle.

As long as KI and SFV keep with the updates I'm more than happy on the PC fighting game front... and with Tekken 7 and KOF 14 looming with likely PC versions- who needs Injustice 2 or XL anyway.

I stand corrected.

But I wonder if he's been silenced by his company not to bring it up. It happens.

That said, WB/Boon look really bad with their PC gaming initiative.

Maybe it's MK XL for PC...Windows 10 Store exclusive, lol
Lol, I doubt it, the backlash would be too strong. I think a patch for steam users makes sense. I'll definitely play a few online games on that version if it happens. It's the right thing to do NO?

Hey, what about crossplay with PSN and PC and XBL folk, that'd give it a boost wouldn't it. Or at least PC/PSN.???????

So they are really going after cpt and capcom huh? I mean they already utterly destroyed sfv on sales. Now they wanna try to take over tournament scene... Also lol at people thinking they're going to update PC version lmaoooooooooo....

500 thousand dollar prize?? Oh wow!

Maybe I should try to get good in MKX!
Because the Capcom ProTour money already has a destination, as we all know...

It's Infiltration.

The problem is they can't just buy their way into the tournament scene. Capcom has been the number one for many years before they ever put big money behind it.

You're right though. Everyone should have realized what a piece of shit Ed Boon and WB are.

Eh, I doubt it's going to do much. We'll probably see some more pros enter MKX tournaments but I strongly doubt anyone's gonna abandon SFV competitively because of this.

And if we're being honest Sonicfox is probably going to win everything anyway

Anyone that thought WB was gonna put up the cash to patch the PC version of MK should've known better. They couldn't even put up the cash to make sure that the launch version wasn't a total clusterfuck. They treat PC gamers like second class consumers, where the only times they don't fuck up their PC ports is because of some happy coincidence, not an active love of the community or the hardware.

At least they're willing to support the competitive scene. That's some good news, right?

It's a real shame that XL isn't worth the effort on an evergreen platform that already hit half a million sales despite the issues and poor reception, we can't even get just the netcode update. It's even worse that Ed is taunting those buyers.

That MK money is going to SonicFox. They should just honestly just rename this tournament to "SonicFox's college fund".

Also Ed Boon is a twat.

Yeah, trolling with character teases and game hints is one thing, but in no way, shape, or form, should he open his mouth on Twitter about the PC version at all given how everything played out. If WB/NR isn't going to do anything at all for PC players now, do not even mention PC. He should know better.

What a dick. I was actually planning on picking up XL on ps4 soon but I don't wanna support these guys anymore.

You know same here, I didn't have a PS4 at the time but now I do and I was going to grab it when I didn't have anything else to play but no way now, I can't support that man.

I just don't get it.

There is certainly a market out there on PC so this doesn't make any business sense.

Apparently they must be making millions off the tourney sponsorships because no way in hell are the few thousand people who play this game competitively more important to them than the hundreds of thousands who own the pc version and would buy all the new DLC in a heartbeat
