SSX? Will it ever come back?

I remember plunging hundreds of hours into SSX Tricky and the PSP version (On Tour) of EA's coveted snowboarding franchise, but not so much the most recent iteration last generation. I'm jonsing for a true followup to Tricky and feel like it could be a potentially huge hit for them w/ solid multiplayer implementation. Has their been any word of its return?

I doubt it will ever come back. If the last-gen SSX was a success maybe, but it wasn't and with its failure the whole series is likely dead.

I wish it wasn't though. Maybe someday we will get lucky and EA will remaster Tricky or 3 or something.

I would actually like a Tricky remaster. I 'still' play that game almost every week.... Zoe for life.

I loved the hell out of Tricky on Gamecube, but the music is always hit or miss with me in the other series.

Even SSX on 360...I tried my damnedest to get into it, but it just didn't click. I hope they find that secret sauce again
Which is pretty much Run DMC's "It's Tricky" without some terrible remix

Probably not. I worked with some people who used to be at EA for the project, but they said that after SSX shipped, several people from that team got folded into the FIFA and NHL teams. Some probably left EA entirely or got moved to other teams, I'm not sure.

I think Todd Batty (CD for SSX2012) even said that it was a huge challenge to get it greenlit. They had a big plan for supporting the franchise if it the reboot was a big success, but nothing really panned out. They had an admirable amount of post-launch support, but I don't really think that was part of the "big plan" I and others had heard from Batty when we visited EA Burnaby before SSX launched. (I wasn't working in the industry at the time.)

If you look at the sports genre now, I don't really think extreme sports really even sell well, so they're not put into production anymore. We're kind of past the point where things like skate and snowboarding games come out from AAA studios. Look at the last Tony Hawk games, as an example.

I'd take an HD port of Tricky or SSX3 in an instant.

The last SSX game was incredibly disappointing.

Funnily enough, first game i setup on my newly built desktop not long ago was SSX3. Truely fantastic and holds up very well today.

I dunno if it's just me, but I always got the impression the SSX devs wanted to steer the series away from the goofy arcadey style that was Tricky. Which was the only reason i cared about SSX!

All 26 hours. Multiple times.
would definatly get it.

the last one was awesome.

another last gen title that EA burried deep, like dead space

Not understanding what makes the games they make good seems to be an almost industry-wide trend at this point.

Hey, I remember your posts getting me into buying the last SSX.

The last SSX had some amazing parts and then some really awful parts. I think they should have had a better MP out of the box and definitely stuck either to their original more gritty SSX or just gone completely more off the rails. The part that really annoyed me was that some of the gritty parts of surviving were actually super fun but then you had tire fire parts like the avalanche which swung the camera around.

That being said, I think you are right about extreme or even street franchises not coming out. I would love to play a new Fifa Street (the last one was super fun and did really interesting physic things like the ball reacting depending on the surface) but Im not sure we'll get any more street games either

The series peaked at 3, everything after has been a complete disappointment. Sad to say it but their isn't a big enough market for these types of games anymore.

The last SSX game was a trainwreck. Going back to it now it feels painfully obvious the game was rushed out and half of the tracks don't even feel finished. This is 100% my favorite video game series, but with how badly SSX 2012 turned out we might very well never see another SSX game again.

I have fond memories of SSX, SSX Tricky, and SSX3.

SSX3 is probably one of my favourite games ever that introduced me to a lot of great music. The whole idea of one seamless mountain really blew me away.

Let's be honest though, EA is not what it used to be. They were great in the PS2/GCN/XBOX era and went downhill ever since.

Given how long it's been, I doubt it.

Well, "ever" is a long time, so it's not impossible, but it's clearly not a priority.

I've never played an SSX other than the one last gen, and I loved it. Was a total left-field purchase for me but I enjoyed it for what it was.

I'd love to see a sequel capturing the spirit of the original or Tricky.
A nice set of well designed tracks with lots of shortcuts to discover, no open world/open mountain bullshit, lots of arcade fun, great tricks and great graphics.
But Ea won't do it because in their mind such game would bomb :p

I'd love it to come back, especially given I'm one of those people that thinks the last 2012 one was the best title in the series. Lacked the personality of the older entries, but wingsuiting, better tracks with physics that let you trick off anything, better controls, and the wonderful music integration more than won me over.

Just give me a PC version with 2012 SSX's gameplay, older SSX games more colorful aesthetic, and a procedural endless downhill mountain mode would be amazing.

I Would rather have an HD Version of tricky and ssx 3. Come on ea, easy money! I have great memories of those two. They had style and substance.

I likewise adored SSX Tricky but never played SSX3 or the new one from 2012. I actually played SSX3 for the first time a few weeks ago and boy... it felt rough. I played for maybe an hour and couldn't get the controls to feel the way they felt in Tricky... I'm used to using the d-pad but that didn't feel right, so I tried the analog stick and that also just felt weird. Wondering if the time has passed for me to go back to SSX3, and it kinda soured me on trying the 2012 SSX

I'd kill for a remake of SSX3.

I spent hrs just starting at the top of that mountain and spearing down. mostly just for fun, not points or time.

wonder how much they'd charge if someone went to them and wanted the assets to remaster that game.

I wish we would get a new SSX game but I very much doubt it happens. The previous game just wasn't a big enough hit. I think the best case scenario is that we get remasters of games like Tricky which I would love it even if we got that. But maybe one day we'll get a straight PS2 to PS4 port. That's the most likely thing to happen. But those releases are coming out so slowly so who knows when it would happen.

The assets are half the game here, they'd also need to renegotiate the music licenses. Without the music reacting to your performance you just aren't playing SSX :(

Around the same time they bring back Skate, probably. Would love a remake of SSX3, easily my favourite in the series.

Or just a big remake/compilation, like SSX Blur but without shitty controls and with a huuuuuge mountain to fuck around on.

edit: ^^^ holy shit if that happened i'd buy all 3 no questions

Snowboarding, skateboarding, and music games have passed and been left for dead for good reason, there isn't an audience for them anymore.

I just wanted one SSX HD game with game play on the level of Tricky and 3 (don't mention SSX 2012, that wasn't it for me). It's weird that it feels like a pipe dream.

The only way I see it coming back is if someone else releases an extreme sports game and it blows up like the THPS series. I can't see EA being the one to try to kickstart something like that. SSX 2012 was greenlit when Skate was doing okay for EA. Right now there are literally no extreme sports games coming from AAA publishers. And THPS, which was once the king of the genre, most recent entry was absolutely atrocious in quality and obviously led to equally atrocious sales.

I don't know when/if the genre will ever come back. But I doubt it'll be any time this generation.

I've been playing SSX3 through PCXS2... I'd be plenty happy if they remade it using an HD version of the Skate engine. One can dream

How does it run on that? I still have my SSX3 disc.

I played THPS3 on PCSX2 when THPS5 came out to wash the bad taste out of my mouth and it ran great.

I love aspects of every game in the series, Tricky and SSX 3 are the best in the series to me. The last gen SSX was really fun and gorgeous but poor multiplayer options, a desire to seem "real" and the silly "extreme weather" stuff all killed it imho

The flight suit was fun though

I'd pay good money for Tricky/3 ports
