EDIT:
Here's a more coherent explanation in English:

Nintendo plans to end all services related to the DSi shop in two phases: one in September 2016, and a second one in March 2017.

* September 30th 2016, 11.59PM (JST): after that date, you will no longer be able to add Nintendo DSi points to your account;
* March 31st, 2017, 11.59PM (JST): after that date, you will no longer be able to access the Nintendo DSi Shop period, even to redownload content you previously bought.

Nintendo recommends that users transfer all their content to a Nintendo 3DS. That way, they will be able to redownload it at any time, from the Nintendo eShop. Also, DSiWare will still be available for purchase from the Nintendo eShop even after the Nintendo DSi Shop has been shut down (however, that only applies to DSiWare titles that are currently available on the Nintendo eShop. Those who are not will be lost forever).

It looks like Nintendo will have a refund program for unused Nintendo DSi Points cards, but the company explained that more details about that would be announced at a later date. Right now, we don’t know whether a similar program will be available in Europe and North America or not.

Man I think I had better luck reading Japanese over the Google translation.

I think it says you can still get those DSi purchases via 3DS?

OP could have at least included the date: Shop will go offline on March 31 2017.
This includes the Move-to-3DS function.
You will be able to add points to the shop until September 30 2016.

It should be mentioned that the shop itself hasn't actually closed yet and will still be open until March 31, 2017 and the last day to add DSi points will be September 30 of this year.

It should ALSO be mentioned that the DSiWare games are still gonna stick around on the 3DS store so the only ones going away for good will be the few untransferrable ones

Hmm, I wonder if that means the Wii shopping channel is soon to follow. Maybe, maybe not. The situation between the 2 storefronts are a little different. Either, I guess I should grab Castlevania the Adventure: Rebirth soon before the chance does end up slipping away.

Oh thank god... So I can still convert my licenses to 3DS ones? Then that is cool.

Hopefully this isn't going to happen to the Wii Shop Channel anytime soon. DSi Shop Channel sort of makes sense since the DSiWare games are all on 3DS's eShop. Wonder what this means in term of DSi-only owners; can you not redownload software once the storefront is taken down or will just be no way to re-access old content?

Oh yeah, I'm certain Wii Shop will stick around for awhile longer. DSi was integrated into the 3DS store while Wii Shop is still Wii Shop on Wii U.

It was nice as Nintendo's first steps into portable digital shops, although it lacked remarkable titles. The WayForward stuff there was great though.

The Wii Shop is kind of a different situation because it's not integrated into the Wii U Eshop.

You can buy DSi stuff on the 3DS Eshop.

Yeah, but you never know. I guess realistically the Wii Shop should probably stay live for a few of years after the Wii U is discontinued but I feel it's better not to take any chances. Time to horde all the Wiiware and Wii exclusive VC games I've been meaning to get.

Somehow managed to miss that important bit, ha ha. Then again, it makes sense: if the service is closed, you can't transfer data that's stored there.

Thank god for NNID.

This had to happen eventually. At least very little will actually be lost, since this stuff has been fully integrated with the current eShop for a while.

For those curious, these are the only things that aren't available on/can't be transferred to 3DS:

Asphalt IV
Flipnote Studio
Let's Golf
Nintendo DSi Browser
Oregon Trail
Real Soccer 2009
Real Soccer 2010
SUDOKU MASTER
SUDOKU SENSEI
Sudoku Student

Wii Shop Channel is probably safe for a while longer, since that is still its own thing separate from the eShop.

Any of these good? Like, is the Oregon Trail that's on there a good port? That's the one I'm most interested in, but if Real Soccer 2009 or Sudoku Sensei or whatever are secretly gems, that'd be good to know too.

Asphalt IV isn't completely terrible.

Flipnote is pretty cool, though redundant if you have Flipnote 3D.

The Internet browser is vaguely usable if you really need to browse the Internet on that specific device for some reason.

Those are the only ones from the list I have any experience with. You'll need to consult others about the rest.

I've only used the DSi shop once for the Four Swords Anniversary game. Don't even remember what the shop looks and sounds like. So no loss for me anyway...

Can't say I'm upset by this news. There were only a handful of good games released on there. If that.

I'm likely wrong but when it's overwhelmingly swamped with garbage games it's hard to find the good.

They probably could (for the most part) if they wanted to, but Wii Mode on Wii U is much more segregated than DSi mode on 3DS. The main issues are that Nintendo Wi-Fi Pay and Play (a.k.a. DLC) as well as manuals in WiiWare games break if the Wii Shop Channel or some replacement does not exist.

Is this the first major platform with a digital distribution system to have an end-date to the ability to re-download titles?
The original Xbox Live was completely killed off shortly after the 360 launched iirc. Anything not downloaded onto your HDD is gone.
I thought original Xbox Live was dead. Or was there no downloadable software on that?
I think Ninja Gaiden had DLC that's now mostly lost to time.

Wikipedia tells me that there were full games, though not many.

Also the DSi shop only launched almost exactly two years before the 3DS launched. The shop may have been designed with future support in mind.

Compare to the six years in between the Wii Shop Channel and Eshop.

Yeah, that's also a possibility. Though, it should be noted that all three shops actually share some infrastructure. All of the software comes from the Nintendo Update Servers.
