GTX 970/980 replaced by Pascal with GDDR5X at Computex

According to SweClockers,

A new generation of GPUs from AMD and Nvidia is imminent. For the latter it is about the architecture Pascal, the successor to today's Maxwell, to be manufactured on a 16 nanometer technology from TSMC. Both points are expected to lead to both higher performance, better energy efficiency.

Previously SweClockers has been able to uncover that Nvidia is aiming for a launch of Pascal for laptops at Computex 2016, which takes place May 31. Now it appears that the plans would include desktops as well, however, neither the highest or lower performance segment will be included which many first predicted.

According to information for SweClockers, Nvidia launches a primarily direct replacement for the Geforce GTX 970 and GTX 980. A source also claims that the first wave should include a replacement for the GTX 980 Ti, however, the performance in terms similar to the GTX Titan X will remain available a foreseeable future.

Another detail is that the graphics cards use memory standard GDDR5X, a further development of GDDR5. The first generation will clear rates of 10 and 12 Gbps, from 7 Gbps used in GTX 970 and GTX 980. Together with a 256-bit memory bus, this would provide bandwidth 320 and 384 Gb / s, in line with the GeForce GTX 980 Ti and AMD's Radeon R9 390X.

That Nvidia is aiming at Computex could be interpreted as their partner gets free reign to demonstrate self-designed solutions in place. Whether that happens remains a mystery, as several partner manufacturers have not yet received any chips by Nvidia or even had access to the full specifications. It could mean that graphics cards will initially only with Nvidia's reference design.

Uncertainties about the naming
In previous leaks have been coming graphics cards appeared as the Geforce GTX and 1070 GTX 1080, which is in line with Nvidia's current naming scheme. Rumors suggest that the company abandon the GTX prefix and instead combine the Roman numeral X (10) with the Arabic which is the standard today - such as Geforce X80.

Searched but couldn't find anything, lock if old.

Laptop Pascal is even more exciting than full versions, considering how big of a jump 970M and 980M were in both performance and power consumption.

Building a computer soon... feel like I should be waiting... but these are probably a while off.

I'm in for the 970 replacement if it happens; heck, I might even do the 980 replacement if the price/performance ratio is right. I just built a Skylake machine in November with a holdover 750ti in anticipation for Pascal. It's chugging along, but I'd really like to open this thing up with a decent GPU!

Certainly going to be interesting to see how the Pascal and Polaris cards compare in terms of price and performance. Now that AMD have forced NVidia to go open source with GameWorks after introducing GPUOpen we might not see so many gaps in performance in individual games going forward. Unless I'm understanding things wrong..?

It's also going to be interesting to see which of Gameworks VR and Liquid VR performs better.

Hopefully both Pascal and Polaris cards are going to release around the same time, I've built my VR machine but just have the GPU to get. In the meantime I'm using the iGPU in my 6700K. It's quite surprised me so far though, I can run Elite Dangerous Horizons at 720p with high quality textures at 30fps on planet surfaces.

They might have something for the laptops launched at Computex, but I'm kinda not believing the GDDR5X desktop bits. Micron has started sampling yes, but they've only given a tentative timetable of summer for the start of mass production. This doesn't mean a released graphics card with GDDR5X at that point, quite the opposite in fact. It takes time before these reach serious volume and can be fitted into a product, so I wouldn't expect a GDDR5X Graphics card before fall earliest.

I'm more interested in the 960 replacement, I hope it's going to be released alongside the other cards this time. That price point has been stagnant for years, it's barely moved up in performance for both Nvidia and AMD.

Would it be likely if the top of the line Pascal laptop would be on par with the 980 card? I'm really debating if I should go all in and get a desktop class 980 laptop or wait for a 1080m, pending on price.

If you want to launch in Fall, you show it at a show in spring, and guess what ...

My 970 has served me admirably and I'm not ready for it to be outdated yet :(

It will get outdated more and more each year, same as almost all other PC hardware.

I doubt that it launches at Computex this year if it's bringing GDDR5X...

GPU manufacturers are commonly having paper launches. Nvidia may be compelled to move first so that they could control PR before AMD cards start hitting the market.

I would expect high end Pascal laptop cards to rival the 980Ti.

Nah the naming scheme will probably be like 970x or something. They're due for a new naming scheme and they're not gonna blow it on a refresh of these cards.

I guess they could demo it for sure like AMD has done for Polaris, but the source implied a hard launch at Computex. GPUs don't usually get a paper launch months before availability.

I don't expect that anything will change in comparative performance because of some GW libs source code became open to a wide public. Devs had access since always, sources aren't needed for driver optimizations.

It's not a refresh of these cards, it's a start of the new Pascal 16nm generation.

My bad, I was confused about what they were talking about in the article... That's what I get for skimming at work

Considering the highest end Maxwell laptop GPUs are rivaling the high end Kepler GPUs, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Maxwell and Kepler are both using the same 28nm production process. Pascal is 16nm. Look at how GTX 680 compared to GTX 580 to get the proper angle for what's coming.

The 980 more than rivaled the 780ti. I expect the X80 to match the 980ti and even beat it in some cases.

I hope that new 980 is like at least 50% faster than current 970, otherwise i will be severely disappointed.
Bandwidth at 384gb/s is slightly disappointing already.

I hope for X80 to be at least 20% faster than 980Ti on average because this way I'll be able to justify the upgrade. Anything less and I'll just wait for GP100 parts.

Do we have any idea how much vram Nvidia will be going with?

8GBs for all GP104 parts most likely.

As soon as the 970 replacement is released I'll be building my new PC. GPU is pretty much the only thing holding me back at this point. I have the money, I just don't want to get a 970 at this point (if I did build now, I'd just put the 960 in my current PC in the machine and use that until Pascal released).
