We now live in a world where I am happier with the potential direction of Xbox, than I am with Playstation. This feels... strange.

The next Xbox console should just be called "Xbox" and made as an upgradable device. This iterative nature is the way I feel the hardware market going.

But we don't really know the plans of either... In fact, bizarrely, Sony hasn't commented on any of these rumours at all.

If Microsoft doesn't release an incremental Xbox, it'll put the new PS4 in a even worse position.

I'm on the fence about this whole thing.

Good move by MS. Let this console gen run its course and design the next Xbox around the idea of supporting incremental hardware upgrades without having to repurchase an entire console to receive them. Sit back and enjoy watching Sony show you what not to do.

Just from Phil spewing this nonsense? Haha
"4 the players" is also non-sense, but its non-sense I'm happy to buy into. At the end of the day, these companies are out to make money, but its the way they go about coaxing my dollars from me that earns a sale. The PS4K actively works against why I bought a Playstation 4. If Microsoft pivot towards a generation-less structure, but are honest about it when they launch the initial generation-less console, that's better for me than a PS4 that deliberately evokes the three previous generations to make a sale, but then kicks that to the curb and changes the game mid-gen, without telling me when I put down my money at the beginning.

A generation-less structure to hardware is all well and good, as long as you're aware you're buying into that at the time. This allows you to make a proper, informed decision before laying down not-insignificant amounts of money. Selling a console on the promise that its the top dog for an entire hardware generation, only to undercut that because why the fuck not, stops consumers from making an informed decision. I didn't decide to buy the weaker PS4 hardware, but Sony quite dishonestly led me to that purchase decision. If I had of known the PS4K was on the horizon, I absolutely would have waited. Its fucking shitty, and I'd take Phil's nonsense over dishonesty any day of the week.

Personally I don't think they really need to release a Xbox 1.5 and I think it's smarter that they don't. Sure Sony doesn't have to either but it seems that VR is a big focus for them so they have more incentive to. Regardless (if everything leaked is true) PS4 will still receive all the same games (with lesser quality visuals) so it's not like Xbox will miss out on any third party content if they don't release an upgraded console revision. Additionally with the NX rumored to be comparable in power to the PS4 I think every third party developer will still mainly focus on trying to achieve something that's attainable on NX, PS4, and Xbox One (unless Nintendo creates some unique control method that makes multi platform games hard to achieve). I think releasing a new "slim" model and cutting the current price of the Xbox One would be a better route for Microsoft to go.

Oh so I'm forced to buy the new PS4K?
Ofcourse not, but it's detrimenting. A console buyer expects to get the best quality of games on the product they purchase expecting to last over half a decade. A new iteration ruins that and creates a negative view with the consumer. A view which many people in here share.

I personally don't mind that much, I'm interested to seeing how it plays out.

Oh so I'm forced to buy the new PS4K?

No, it's the fact eveyone has gone into this gen not knowing there would be a better PS4.

Honestly, if they do this then announce a PS5, I'm not getting the PS5. I'm just gonna wait it and not get caught out again with a PS5K+ whatever.

I still can't fathom how you guys are taking this as moving away from another console mid gen.

He's clearly saying this:

"We are very pleased with the performance of the xbone, so we won't just release a slightly more powerful console to try to fix the performance issues. We will offer a significant more powerful console, so for instance you can use with the oculus rift without any compromises"

Edit: The rift part is obviously by me, but I mean that's how they will position the newer vox, not to fix the performance of the xbone, but to enable a new experience that can only be dome with powerful hardware.

You are right. It's like Sony and Microsoft reversed directions all of a sudden. Microsoft has become pro-gamer and Sony has become pro-business. Looks like Sony's success went to their head. They already have a system that is doing great why get greedy and not wait a few years before offering a new console. Makes no sense given how well the PS4 is doing. I fear Sony is going to bungle their lead.

Anyway, if this is the case, 3rd parties aren't really going to take extra advantage of the additional horsepower. Games will be designed for the lowest spec. We might just see upgrades in framerate and resolution but why not just get a PC if you are that much of a graphics whore? Since the PS4 has very little exclusives and Microsoft is not going in the same direction, it sort of makes the PS4.5 pretty pointless.

Xbox 4K.

Will make Sony look silly when they use 4K as well and it lets them finally get on the same numbering level.

They can then call them next one Xbox 5.

They should go along with the 4k title, bring it on par with ps4 numerically, since numbers are a powerful medium in the consumer market.

I wish Sony shared the same sentiment. I don't like this iterative console model taking shape.

Then don't buy it. That will stop it.

We have two main markets. Casual and hardcore.

PS4K is not a casual/mass market device. It appeals to all sorts of tech casuals don't even understand.

So if the hardcore don't buy it because they don't value it either, this will end here.

Now that the PS4K is all but confirmed, would a new machine that is presented as a successor to the Xbox One that's completely backwards compatible get more "hype"?

Man, this year is going to be really interesting.

I'm on the fence about this whole thing.

If they don't release one then they should focus on bringing the price down to $199 with a slim version to try and capture the budget market. But it's still a losing proposition against a probable slim regular PS4.

Not sure how not doing anything is the more successful strategy though. I think there are enough tech minded people in the console market these days to find the value in spending a little more to get a less obsolete box. The average age of gamers now is like in the mid 30s, as in people with a lot of disposable money. IOW, there's room for success in selling a budget and high end model. Doing nothing just leaves money on the table for these platform holders. The outraged will eventually be able to afford one come 2018 after a price drop or two.

I think MS will release one. The next major jump in power comes at the end of the decade, and that's way too long to be stuck with 1.3TF. The value proposition of releasing an upgraded slim model is the highest the moment the node shrink becomes viable and that's late 2016.

This is an amazing amount of decisive thinking for the future of something that hasn't even been announced yet.

Nope, you aren't. I know I'm not going to. I already spent $400 + whatever the ungodly amount of games I've purchased costed. Now if I want the best possible PlayStation experience, something Sony sold the PS4 as, I have to spend $500 more just a few years later for that priviledge? And what kind of advantages are PS4K user going to have in competitive multiplayer games? Cleaner graphics, better draw distances and framerates? And then PSVR is just more of the same shit. I can't wait for E3 when people are told they need to buy a new $500 console just get the best experience from a $400 device they already preordered for their PS4.

Screw that. I bought a console, not a pc clearly. Ditching my PS4 while I can still get something for it and investing that money in other platforms.

I think the bold is really Microsoft's best chance, and frankly, a smart business move. The issue with the Xbone, apart from the DRM catastrophe, was the price. Inferior hardware for a higher price tag was always going to kill them. A re-designed Xbone Slim for $199 could actually do well, at least in western markets, with the right marketing.

As for Sony, they're not releasing a PS4 Slim. The OG PS4 was engineered to come down in price across the generation through the simplicity of its design. Cerny did a fantastic job - it's already the "slim" model. The hardware revision is the PS4K, likely to extend the life of the generation to PS3 length. I suspect Sony prefer this, because they're dumping a few hundred million in hardware R&D every 8 years instead of every 5. Longer to recoup costs and make money. Its a very smart play from Sony, after the PS3 burned decades of profits.

So they will potentially have the weakest console on the market then.

People worried about the PS4 getting the short end of the stick vs. the PS4K wont have much to worry about then.

its not like multiplatform games are going to look any better though, at least not much, you know, PARITY. Only exclusives, but thats already happening.

What difference does it make? All their games are coming to PC, and by the time the Nextbox will arrive, you can buy a cheap PC that will play those exclusive games at a decent clip. I Just don't feel there will be a reason to buy a new Xbox anymore.

Manufacturing defects contributed to slim editions of the 360 and PS3. There is no similar issue here.

The Christmas before last Xbox One was selling for slightly more with multiple games. A $200 edition isn't going to do any better and they don't want to lose money on a console that will be replaced, with a much more powerful model according to Phil, if they want to keep competing in this space.

Thank god, I think it's an insanely risky move..Nobody should have to shell out another 400$ this early on unless we are just saying fuck it, on to the next gen!

Isn't Phil the one who started the whole conversation on upgrading consoles mid-life?

What Phil alluded to sounds great, incremental updates every year (NOT 400$ updates) kind of like a PC. To me that's what makes the most sense and I hope Xbox adopts this in the future. IPhones, computers and lots of other devices get updated every year and you can choose to wait or have the most up to date version.

You're ignoring the PS2 Slim, which was designed to do one thing: lower the BoM. The cost of manufacturing the obtuse hardware of the Xbone, which was designed to accommodate a "TV TV TV Sports" focus with a TV pass through that few gamers use, prevents Microsoft from engaging in an all out price war. A Slim Xbone with no HDMI In would allow the console to be manufactured for a lot less, and gives Microsoft a chance to refocus, and target the budget consumer market. Microsoft have a very real and demonstrable motivation for an Xbone Slim hardware revision.

To be clear, if PS4k doesn't come out, your current PS4 experience wouldn't be any better than what it is now. If the PS4k does come out, your current PS4 experience doesn't get any worse, unless knowing there's something else better out there affects your ability to enjoy the games you already have as well as future ones.

I actually think this is the best move here. Release a slim/cheaper console to the market.

While Sony chase the hardcore MS chase the casual market.
How is that good for me or any other core gamer. Chasing casuals is partly why they are getting creamed now.

He didn't say he would't do what Sony is rumored to be doing with PS4.5. He said he wants the upgrade to be substantial. I'm sure Sony believes this upgrade is substantial so he really isn't saying all that much. I would assume that if ms does the upgrade, he will think it's an substantial one. Whether it actually is a big upgrade is another story entirely.
