For those of you lucky enough to already have the damned thing, have you played with the sensor placement at all? I'd like to put my first sensor to the right and fairly high up from where I'll be sitting/standing. Just wondering if folks have had any issues with higher sensor placement.
For now I placed it according to the instructions, back on my desk at the indicated position pointing towards me.

I have to say that I'm not particularly happy with the tracking for everything which isn't a cockpit thing. It's better than DK2 (for one, it still mostly works when turned around!), but as soon as you move around a bit more or spend some time at a bad angle to the device (which you can't actually tell since you have no idea of your real world orientation after some time in a game) tracking can sporadically break down or get jumpy.

What are the main differences between the DK2 and the release version?
The primary differences are higher resolution, higher refresh rate, back-of-the-head tracking, and better ergonomics.

My 2 cents on EVE Valkyrie is that it is so so. Maybe the most divisive title.
It's not badly executed mind you as the controls are very responsive and it ticks many sci-fi boxes but from the hours played in Alpha/Beta and now the final game I just find the gameplay a bit boring frankly. I love the EVE universe and had a lot of fun with the MMO so I want to like it but the relatively thin dog-fighting combat of Valkyrie is not winning me over. Menus are a bit messy and the sense of VR is not that strong (has more to do with everything being space-distance away that). However, I need to spend more time with the final game but there's more alluring games in Lucky's Tale and Chronos right now.
I guess it depends on how much you enjoy dog-fighting MP games though there's no gravity to battle against here. Movement doesn't feel challenging as you can hault to complete stop or go lighting fast and take super sharp turns. Actual combat is a bit chaotic as well with most deaths being surprise attacks hard to defend against.

edit: I'm thinking something like Descent is more appropriate for fun space-ship MP fighting as you would be navigating dangerous labyrinths underground with FPS tropes like chokepoints, cover and camping being more of an element.

I'm definitely skeptical about the depth of Eve Valkyrie. I'm sure this information is out there but since there are so few players right now it's hard to get a sense of if there's any sort of worthwhile progression mechanics or advanced mechanics that come into play once you've unlocked things. The menu's could be better as well like you mentioned. The "sense of VR" was very strong for me though. Out in space with no frame of reference there was still a sense of speed and tracking other ships with my head while I made turns was on a completely different level from doing something like that in a 2D game on a monitor.

I'd definitely like to see them expand it with more modes and a larger variety of maps. Star Citizen in VR is ultimately what I'm aiming for but as an arcadey space dogfighting sim I like what I've played of Eve Valkyrie.

Whew, they DID ship a Rift today. I thought the one guy delivering was out.

I've been having a blast with Lucky's Tale on my DK2. In fact it was the game that sort of revitalized my excitement for VR.

Same. It is truly the first game that feels natural as a VR game. I love how it feels like you've been transported to just inside the screen of a regular video game. It's all so tiny and cute! Especially how Lucky looks up at you when he's idle.

Also: it was quite amazing/startling to accidentally hit my virtual head on one of the light fixtures in the game and having it jingle and move, it felt real.

I tried to place mine on top of a bookshelf in the corner of my room, but the setup wizard wasn't having it, and my position in Oculus Home was super low. I ended up putting it on top of a vertical Xbox that's sitting on my desk and everything seems fine. That being said, I'd like to go back to the shelf setup if I could make it work, because then I wouldn't have to reposition the sensor for sitting vs standing.

This place needs some lists!

Your Top 5 games to play with your Rift - via either the Oculus Store or SteamVR Store.
Bonus points if a game in your list takes more than 10 hours to complete.

Gonna be a short list. Of the few who have headsets, probably even fewer can justify buying an actual pool of the expensive, seemingly content light games to compile a legitimate best of list. Maybe better to ask what games suck and which are really stand out in quality. Eve Valkyrie is a really crappy $60 package for instance. Farland's is really cool.

we make a list of the 5 people who actually got a rift

Damn, now I feel bad. Like I don't deserve to have it. I mean, I'm enjoying it...but it hasn't rocked my world. Its just....fun.

Yes, this is my impression. I keep thinking - "there's gotta be some 20+ hour cool game, right?" Reviews seem to point to Chronos as being the best, longer Rift (or Steam-compatible) game right now. But $50 for 12-15 hours, for a 'good but not great' title seems like a lot just to pat myself on the back for being an early adopter.

So we enter the last day of the second week of launch. Only a couple more working days until the 12thnwhen were supposed to hear more - and I'd hoped the first bunch of orders would have been finished by then, but we still aren't even done with the KS ones yet (I know because I'm still waiting...)

There's absolutely a premium to pay for software as an early VR adopter right now. Games and apps that would cost $1 or 2 on the appstore cost $10-$20 because of the small currently projected market. Some of these devs are trying to turn a profit off the bat (can't blame them), rather than taking it as an investment in learning experience... but not everyone can afford to subsidize work like that.

Didn't know what it was about eve valkyrie but I couldn't get into it very much.

Got elite dangerous tonight and i've spent the last hour learning how to lauch, dock, and travel between systems and absolutely love it. The only problem i have is when i start the game, i always have to press the xbox button to re-orient the screen.

If this is considered a launch, then this is probably the best lineup of games for any system that i've bought. Minus eve valkyrie, all the games have been stellar.

I'm going to need you to take that back and explain to me that all of this frustrating waiting will eventually pay off with the most life changing device of all time!

Orders be processing. Hope we have some winners in this thread tonight.

Only losers :(

Yeah, I've actually really enjoyed Eve, even though it's clearly quite shallow, but most of all its wetted my appetite for something deeper like Elite. Are you playing with a HOTAS or does the Xbox controller work fine?

Just tried all the free stuff apart from Luckys Tale with the DK2, some really cool things but the stuff that had me most excited was the video content, stuff like being at sporting events, being IN a documentary/nature program seems amazing.

If I could buy a rift now and sports would just sell me virtual tickets with great views to their events I'd be completely in for that.

Is there anything to demo for sporting events? I would be curious to try that out.

Edit: Latest shipping update.

Who is shipping?
Oh my god! Bear is shipping!
How can that be?!

Are there any impressions with games that were already out? More specifically I am interested in DCS. All impressions I seem to find are for the launch games but weirdly enough already established games seem to be ignored (except maybe Elite Dangerous).

What is this shipping update, lol

Shipping was really good for Europe yesterday. They are just about over the 6 minute hump in places like UK. NA saw no movement up the Time Ladder as the latest order yesterday was at 5min 17 seconds. I hope they make a huge NA push tonight.

UploadVR has a video review of Technolust up. They're really positive on it.

I am really interested in this game. It wasn't even on my radar a couple of weeks ago.

I hope they get Vive support soon, or my rift arrives ASAP. I actually have the full version of Technolust purchased because I backed it, but I can't play it yet because... well, what I just said.

I'm really curious if they plan on it. They announced Technolust: Scanlines last year for PSVR and Vive but said it wasn't a port and was basically a new game that would require tracked controllers. I'm hoping they do get around to porting this one though since I cancelled my Rift order ;__;

Oh, cool. Good news somewhere at least. I'd be on board for some solid NA movement today too. At this point, I'm just hoping it comes by next weekend. I've been reluctant to schedule a large chunk of time to myself thus far since everything is up in the air.

I'll be interested to hear how you like the Rift in comparison to the Vive, Krejlooc.

Blair Renaud said he'll think about all that stuff once Technolust has been released. He's never ruled it out, but rather he's been so busy finishing the game with his small team. I bet it'll eventually come to the Vive (and likely PSVR too). And similarly, I bet scanlines will come tot he rift.

It didn't make Steam folks happy though. They feel like it's pushing people off their platform and I'm still fighting them to keep it this way..

You may want to consider picking up Virtual Desktop sooner than later if you want an Oculus Home key.

The xbox controller. Being new to the game it's hard to stay stable though, there is a lot of wobbling involved without any assists on and it feels like the controller could use a softer touch.

Is there a specific hotas to get for this game? I really liked the game so far I can see how the controllers would really add to the immersion that's already there.

It's pricey, but me and my friends got the Saitek X55 Rhino - Elite has default button mappings specifically for that, the controller actually has a lot more buttons/switches than are needed, and it controls great. A lot of people also get the cheaper X52.

So I have had my Rift for 2 days now. Quick positives and negatives -

+ Build quality is fantastic. Feels great. Comfortable, easy to adjust.
+ Headphones sound great and are very convenient
+ Set up is super easy
+ Experience is very impressive
+ Elite Dangerous is incredible in this thing!
+ Apollo 11 experience is the future of documentaries!
+ Dreamscape is a big WOW experience. The one to show people new to VR for sure!

Some pretty big downsides though

- Lens flare issue is a MASSIVE PROBLEM. Gear VR and DK2 did not have this! How did this get released with this issue! Creates such a massive loss of IQ. Makes everything look blurry. Hope VIVE doesn't have this issue, that alone would justify the switch.
- Field of vision is dissapointing. Feel like I am playing while looking through two toilet rolls. Gear VR had better FOV.
- Motion sickness still a big issue (for me at least), can't play EVE Valkyrie for more than 5 minutes (even when using MotionEaze!). Any game that requires me to walk or look with the controller is major lunch losing time! So Albino Lullaby was unplayable to me. But games that try and accommodate this issue were fine, like Dead Secret and Land's End.
- Game line up is disappointment, while I have not purchased Chronos yet I was underwhelmed with almost everything I tried.

To expand on the games I played. Lucky's Tale is cool, but not what I wanted VR for. As I said, I can't even play EVE, just thinking about playing it now is making me feel nauseous! Dead Secret and Lands End got boring fast. Everything else I tried was pretty forgettable (as in I can't even remember them).

I am so much more excited about the games for VIVE (which will come to Rift when the controllers come out). Fantastic Contraption, Job Simulator, Hover Junkers, The Gallery and even Valve's VR experience demos look so much more interesting than what I have tried so far.

I mean I am very happy just to play Elite Dangerous in VR right now. And I am still excited to play Chronos, Edge of Nowhere and The Climb but outside of those convincing me otherwise I think the sitting VR experience is not very convincing yet.

Parabolee, word is that both headsets have the lens flare problem. I think your impressions are the first I've read that says the Rift FOV is worse than Gear VR.

The Vive does have this issue, and it's probably roughly the same in terms of how strong the effect is. I've heard people say it's worse, and I've heard people say it's better. We were made aware of this issue a few months ago for the Vive because people noticed it during previews, but I've never come across anyone mentioning it about the Rift until the final version arrived for some people.

As for your issues with motion sickness, have you tried drinking some ginger ale or taking pills against that kind of thing? It might help you train your brain to accept this kind of experience. You're already describing symptoms of having your brain associate certain games with sickness, triggering nausea just by thinking about them. That's not good, and the sooner you can stop that from happening, the better. The brain is a fickle thing.

I MIGHT be wrong about the FOV being worse than Gear VR. It's worse than I recall, but it's been a few weeks. Maybe my memory is faulty. Or maybe the higher quality of the experience highlights the lack of FOV more.

That sucks. This issue was the biggest surprise as I never experienced it with either the DK1 or the Gear VR. And I hear it was not present in the DK2 either so strange for it to turn up in both VIVE and Rift.

As for the motion sickness. Yeah use Ginger Ale and MotionEaze. It's much better than it was back on the DK1. But like I said games that use a controller for movement like a regular FPS are bad for me.

And EVE was really bad. Strange thing is that I was fine with Elite Dangerous though, which is very similar space combat (when you are in combat).
