Got my Rift yesterday evening. I didn't have that much time with it though. Super quick impressions:

+ SDE is fairly minimal
+ Lucky's Tale is great

- Sensor range is disappointing.
- Fresnel lens glare issue is there, but not as pronounced as I feared.
- EVE Valkyrie had an install issue that took me a little while to solve, I didn't get to spend that much time in the game.
- My face got super toasty after having the headset on a little while. I think I need to make the fit a bit looser.

Developer of Virtual Desktop commented on Reddit today:

You may want to consider picking up Virtual Desktop sooner than later if you want an Oculus Home key.

If this is true, then it seems like quite a hypocritical move by Valve.

Every day I feel like I should cancel my Rift pre order, I am 90% convinced at this point I will use it for a few days and then never touch it again like Kinect, Vita, 3D on TV, or even my blu ray player now.

Anyone else cancelled and regret it? I need a time traveler from the future to come back and tell us when CV2 is released :(

At the least

Open it and play with it for a couple days

You would at least get what you paid for it on EBay or you could always return it....

Europe is seeing heavy movement again this afternoon.

Australia saw it earlier this week as well. It could mean that a large amount of units have come out of China and have simply hit close countries before reaching NA.

I don't know. Just my guess.

If you really don't like it, I'm sure someone on GAF would love to grab it and cover all of your costs. It would be a cool gesture.

I'm a little surprised by this, can you elaborate? My brief time with it made me think it was faaar better than the DK2.

Seems great to me. I mean if you are stood up it seems a good step in any direction, and lots of room to really lean in you are sat down (which the current Rift games are really designed for).

Might depend how close you are to the sensor.

The Vive does have this issue, and it's probably roughly the same in terms of how strong the effect is. I've heard people say it's worse, and I've heard people say it's better. We were made aware of this issue a few months ago for the Vive because people noticed it during previews, but I've never come across anyone mentioning it about the Rift until the final version arrived for some people.

Some guy on reddit managed to photograph the halo/lens flare thing on both headsets. Its definitely there on both but it looks more pronounced on the Rift:

Vive:

Rift:
GlareTest-8mm-1.jpg

It's definitely pretty noticeable on the Rift but it honestly didn't bother me that much after a few minutes.

I haven't had a chance to try the Vive yet.

Those are both Vive. DK1 on the top and Pre model on the bottom. Taken from this page.

Actually Vive DK1 on top, Pre on bottom.

Unfortunately, I don't have any frame of reference since my VR experience up to this point has been headsets without positional tracking (Gear VR, borrowing a DK1 for a week).

Got out the tape measure. I first tried to place the sensor about 7-7.5 feet away from my seat on the couch. During the initial setup, before you put the headset on, it asks you to move the headset around to verify the sensor is working. It wouldn't pick up anything after trying a few times, so I skipped that step. Then, later after putting the headset on to do the rest of the setup, the sensor attempts to scan you again in your "home" standing position. I could see the sensor position in VR but it yelled at me saying the position wasn't good. I moved it about 4.5-5 feet away and tried again... this time it worked fine. And for whatever reason, I was having issues with tracking loss when I turned around. I could reproduce it fairly consistently.

I forgot about light interference - tonight I'll try with the lights turned off and see if that makes a difference.

Oh, and there was one more thing I forgot to mention - my DisplayPort to HDMI adapter is not working with the Rift. Curiously, I can't remember where I got it from or find it in my order history... it's possible I had it laying around and it's an old spec. It works just fine for my TV for now, but if I upgrade to 4K I'll want that port back... I will probably try ordering a new one.

Just finally got my "Order is processed" e-mail! Hope it shipped (or ships) tonight or tomorrow!

:05 "March" pre-order here, SoCal.

Well, my Vive order might still be lost in the ether but at least I've got this. Things are looking up!

Got my rift, Here's a short review

Side note ... I am disabled and can't really move my head around too much so don't know how much it effects my experience compared to someone who can

Good =

Most anything rendered real time in 3D = Awesome
Lucky Tale is epic!

Bad =
3D videos = look like crap and dont feel right either
Project cars = didn't feel right, maybe its cause I couldn't turn my head enough and if you
don't focus on the center of the image... if you look too far up down left right for me it seems to get blurry (most noticeable in the main menu)

They need more demos of games on the store... or at least a return policy. I have no problem buying games (have 2200 on steam) but for my limited neck movement its too expensive of a gamble to buy games that might not feel right.

Also they need to add the ability to the right stick of the controller to virtually turn yourself for those not in a rotating chair / who can't turn there head much

Completed the second boss in Chronos and progressed a bit past that. Game continues to be very good. I'm curious how all the story elements come together as there has been some surprising encounters I wouldn't expect (spoiler-full image I took). The whole game is structured in a light metroidvania fashion in that you criss-cross the environment with new sections opening up all over (it's done well so there's no 'backtracking').

Also tried the Oculus Dreamscape. Really well made series of tech demos though short. Especially the diorama (looks real, wtf) and the Pixar esque robot demo. It's a nice series of show-offs to have people grasp VR in five minutes.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
Canadian orders are starting to come through, only at :01 though.

Anyone know if there are alternate endings in Chronos, or anything to do after you beat the game? It was a great game overall, but the ending felt kind of unsatisfying. Like they're planning on a sequel or DLC. I kind of want to jump off a cliff a bunch to see if there's a max age, but I don't want to mess up my save if there's more to do.

Are there any impressions with games that were already out? More specifically I am interested in DCS. All impressions I seem to find are for the launch games but weirdly enough already established games seem to be ignored (except maybe Elite Dangerous).

I think DCS just patched in CV1 support. I just tried it out for a couple minutes, and the default view was way too low and close to the instruments, even after resetting the view in the oculus popup menu. I didn't look around in settings to see if there was a way to fix it. It was very cool to see all the controls in the cockpit up close.

I'm in Canada and not a backer... It was due to arrive on Wednesday but I missed the UPS guy so gotit yesterday

On a side note I had to pay no duty / import tax

That's good to hear. That plus free shipping helps make the wait a little more bearable. Congrats on getting yours. I'm hoping next week is the week for me but I've said that both weeks since launch :p

I know you could move around a bit already with the dk2 but since it's 360 degrees on cv1 it's really nice to just be able to stand up and walk around my ship in Elite. Sometimes you're stuck on a long flight and I'll just sorta stretch my legs and look out the windows while I wait. And naturally the chair is always where you left it so sitting down feels natural.

I'd actually like it if there was a way for me to remove the headless body in the chair, since it looks silly when I'm moving around.

Proton Pulse might be my new favourite VR game. It's like being inside of a Breakout arcade machine that's being tipped over in a rave!

So is virtual desktop the way to go to be able to simulate playing non VR games on a giant screen? Or is there another program that does that?

5 minutes and 32 seconds order time, Kansas. Had my order processed at 12:41 AM Central Time. Seems like a lot of us will have them the first half of next week (hopefully).

Thank goodness for UPS My Choice, I'm going to be out of town Wednesday and Thursday and based on all the activity there is a good chance that is when my Rift will arrive.

They had reached 5:15 for Canada earlier this week. Frustrating that they went back but those people do deserve their orders first. I am at 6:04. If I was in the states I would be next shipment.
