Anyone ever work with a Snitch?

Anyone ever deal with a snitch at wotk? How did you deal?

One of my coworkers is the biggest tool I've ever had the displeasure of working with. Our office has a laid back environment but we're a very productive office that reaches their numbers.

We have an office snitch who doesn't appreciate this environment. Hes repeatedly tattled to HR about our environment and last week we were randomly audited. Our culture has now started undergoing a change and our productivity has fallen off a cliff.

And now both my managers are thinking of finding work elsewhere. Whole situation is shitastic to say the least.

It really does suck how one employee among many can ruin things for everyone so easily. Doesn't seem very democratic. Workplaces should be able vote people like that out.

I think everyone works with someone like this. There's always someone bringing news and stirring the pot to make themselves look better. Sucks =/

Certain situations like racism warrant being snitched on obviously, but most things people snitch on are petty.

There are legitimate reasons to go to HR if a situation is problematic.

What was the work "culture" previously? Why did this person feel the need to report it? Was it simply due to being laid back?

What is being snitched on? Your post is lacking details, which makes me think you're embarrassed about the activities you were doing.

What did he snitch on?

sounds like cock fights

Given the tone of your text you're not a fun coworker.
Calling a coworker a snitch kinda seals the deal on that.

I swear that sentence wasn't there when the post went up. Maybe I completely missed it.

I could take a guess at what's going on. The group probably isn't exactly following company procedures/rules (which actually has allowed them to be more productive).

What did he snitch on?

He's consistently told my Manager's Manager that he thinks our work environment is unprofessional and we joke and talk Basketball too much.

He doesn't like the fact that we play Hip Hop in the office ( We all vote and hes the only one thats always against)

Pretty much he's the only white dude in a predominantly Black branch.

That's my assumption as well.

I am probably a lot like the OP in that regard. I have my methods and get the job done but I can be laid back about it and I like to do things my way. I honestly don't think it should matter as long as I get my job.

I do clash with people once in a while though.

I am officially going to steal this for a sitcom I just decided to write.

Heh, you sound like me. I've worked at companies both big and small...

Obviously, the big company was way too bureaucratic and heavy handed with its policies. The small company almost didn't have any, which led to problems of its own. I definitely prefer a middle ground I think.

If you reach your targets and the others don't complain about this, the audit didn't turn up anything wrong, I don't see why they'd try to change your department instead of having the guy transferred somewhere else and try to find a replacement that fits better. Bad management.

Maybe you guys joke around and talk about baseball too much.

Maybe you should rotate what music you listen to.

Oh ok. I was just wondering because 'laid back environment' could be anywhere between what you've just described, to people sleeping at their desks and strolling in and out whenever they wanted. I've definitely worked with people like that in the past, and generally I've found they tend to be people who don't make an effort to integrate with the rest of the team.

I do agree with the above posted that the music should be rotated a bit. It's not a big deal but I know I'd get annoyed too if my colleagues were constantly playing music I didn't like without really giving me a say in the matter, other than a vote that's ultimately ignored.

It is a job, not your social club. Honestly, I feel bad for the poor employee that gets called a snitch for just wanting to go to work in a professional setting.

Also, you're an adult working in an office. You can drop the "snitch" mentality.

Had one once. She started filming people and audio recording people with her phone/camera in the office as evidence. We work with some extremely confidential materials in the workplace. When she went to show HR and complain, they fired her instead, and nothing happened to us. Not only for that, but for privacy issues on our end as well.

Felt good.

Hah, that's amazing.

I can't imagine snitching just based on the fact that we didn't like the same music or interests. I would just try to find a way to make it work.

It's funny, because I imagine this scenario plays out the opposite way a lot more. Most work environments I have encountered have been predominantly white with one or two black people.

It shouldn't have been that hard to work this out for everyone without having to go to management.

"Laid back" doesn't automatically mean non-professional. You can be entirely professional but still listen to music and have non-work discussions.

We didnt fail the audit if thats what youre asking...but its a little too coincidental that he has been complaining and then BOOM an audit happens.

It would take so much for me to complain to my bosses, so I really cant understand where this snitch is coming from. Its work, if you dont like what your co workers talk about dont part take, put your head down and work. He can also put one earbud in and listen to his own music and ignore you guys yet still hear if he needed. Whats his end goal everyone in silence?

Mentalities like this are why so many jobs end up feeling like soul sucking nightmares.

If they're doing their jobs right they're obviously not joking around and talking too much.

What are your jobs? Is this snitch guy not performing well? Is he feeling socially excluded? Is he racist? What do you see as his true motivation for trying to change the environment?

I wouldnt say hes racist. But now that you mention in terms of our Sales numbers he is the one that is at the bottom of our rankings (Both in Branch and in our entire area) and our promotions are based on our customer service scores and sales numbers. Hes on the bottom for both.

If everything was OK, I'd have a talk with your manager about how this person impacts team morale and if you can work out a transfer for him and have him replaced. Don't know your company structure of course and the possibilities there, but if he under performs and drags the rest with him, that is something your boss needs to fix.

Yeah, I wonder what the vote count looks like in a "predominantly black" office.

"Sorry Ted, looks like you lose again."
I fail to see what this has anything to do with it. Plenty of white people like hip hop, it's a pretty popular music genre.

True, but the OP said "we all vote and hes the only one thats always against"...so if the office is predominantly black, then that means the snitch will always lose. Even without the other white people in the office voting in favor of rap he'll lose.
