You mean the one where you slide and hit a single button to take down an enemy and then spam punch until they swing so you can counter?

Catalyst seems the same except without even a counter to add texture to the fights. I don't have beta to confirm how spammy and automated it looks, though.

The combat is very spammy. Against the normal guards anyway. Run up, mash a button, done.

Are there any opportunities to avoid combat in the demo, or to avoid the 3rd-person takedowns?

If you have momentum you can actually just nudge the enemies out of the way and carry on running. There are instances of forced combat so I'm not sure how often you can do that in the full game. The only takedown I've encountered was the one right at the beginning during the tutorial so I'm not sure how frequent they are.

In my time with it the only time you're forced into combat is for tutorial purposes.

Otherwise there's a dodge move and a light attack move to keep your momentum.

There are types of events where you can't allow yourself to get into combat or you'll fail to reach your destination in time. As mentioned by Gavin you can shove/knock out enemies in one hit if you have sufficient running momentum.

As expected, no code for me... :-(
What are the chances they send some more tomorrow? I live in Croatia so that usually sucks, even though we're EU.

Uh?

They counter your moves after you repeat the same move twice. This is categorically wrong.

It's still not great - they should be WAY more aggressive and mobile, but in no way can you button mash through them.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
*sigh* Still no code from AR15, Twitter, or EA e-mailing me.

This is Karma for me setting aside my entire weekend to run through the City of Glass. DICE has forsaken me. *rage*

Okay, so, I'm into this thing after researching a few more elements, and it's definitely not as bad as it seemed. They just didn't tell us a lot about how progression worked. You're able to unlock rolling, coiling, and quickturning in the first hour of play. Which is awesome.

After that...

I've been having some fun with the smaller details.

In the glass skyscraper, have you noticed you can skid your shoulder across the windows? It's hilarious. I wish there were oily shoulder marks or something.

Also, you can shift forwards constantly. It doesn't make you run faster, but it makes Faith sprint like she's a coked up The Flash. Combine that with glass streaking, and you're a hyperactive defacement extraordinaire.

Played the first couple missions. It's definitely Mirror's Edge. Random thoughts:

-the unlock tree is terrible and shouldn't exist
-it looks a lot better in motion than screenshots suggest, but performance is pretty bad
-the cutscenes are ok but it's standard video game writing so far
-open world is actually pretty cool
-running around feels great

And there it is.

I guess everyone can calm down now? :)

Finally watched some gamepaly. The open-world gameplay doesn't look too bad to me. The whole point of the game is the traversal so the open world has to be designed around that. That means by its very nature it can't be a flat sandbox game. The side missions look okay too. Some seem to pretty much just be spacial puzzles which should make for nice gameplay that stands out among AAA games these days if you turn off runner vision.

I just hope the collectibles aren't tossed all over the place but are actually hidden in hard-to-reach places to test your running skills.
