Quantum Break PC performance thread

I fixed the frame pacing! It's hacky and awful and very much specific to my display, but the game feels MUCH smoother now. I am VERY happy!

I'm not sure if this will actually help other people--or if it won't seem obvious to someone who's experienced with this kind of thing--but I figured I'd post in case it helps someone. It's definitely improved the game for me.

So, background: I discovered a while back that my projector is able to accept a 720p@120hz input. It will only display every other frame (unless I turn on "frame packing" 3D, which makes everything red), but it does accept the input. I'm not quite sure what this does to Quantum Break, but it makes the game feel as smooth as I'd expect of a 60 fps game. My theory is that I've created a semi-triple-buffered setup, with my projector acting as the third buffer.

However, my projector refuses to display resolutions higher than 720p at anything above 60hz. This is a problem for Quantum Break, because it means the game is actually rendering at 480p. My solution was to create a custom resolution which is LISTED as a 1080p resolution, but has the TIMING of a 720p resolution.
Capture.png

As you can see, "Active Pixels" is set to 1280x720. This causes my desktop to render a 1080p image, but send a downsampled 720p image to my display. Quantum Break, however, only renders in 720p anyway, so I don't care!

Again, I have no idea if this will help anyone else, but it's made the completely smooth for me!

Performance is "ok" for me on ultra with s 980 ti but holy shit is the IQ bad in this game. The film grain is one of the worst I've seen.

Can't believe some people are holding this up so high in the graphics dept.

Well I am going to continue playing after the big patch the only port in recent memory I can compare this too is batman arkham knight. This is an awful showing for remedy and MS and I really hope they take it seriously.

Also wtf is up with the stuttering on the streaming video? I'm running a 100mb connection fwiw. I went out and bought a wireless xb1 adapter to circumvent my steam bpm woes, seems to work flawlessly though I miss my sweet gyro aim on the steam controller.

Game is really Cool so far and I took the advice of others putting it on hard/not playing like a normal cover shooter. My settings are everything high at 1080p and my frame rate stays at around 30 when I turn the lock on. Current setup: i7 4790k gtx 970 and 16gb ddr3. No driver crashes on latest, stuttering present and annoying.

No, that's what feels better. There is less lag. It feels like playing at 60hz. Maybe because the framerate and the refresh rate are both in sync now?
Basing on all my previous knowledge, 30Hz should be laggy as hell (for example - set 30Hz as desktop refresh rate and try moving the mouse), but this is brave new world of UWP, so anything's possible. It may be even overriding the refreshrate and not setting 30Hz despite reporting it.

How far into the game have you gotten? The game looks phenomenal for an Xbox One game. As a PC game, I think the image reconstruction looks substantially better at 1440 or 4K, but 4K isn't really a viable option, and they really should have an option to turn it off, or at least minimize it, along with a film grain toggle. Running at 1080p, the IQ isn't great.

The art direction, art, characters models, character animation, the crazy time-based set pieces, and especially the visual effects are really top notch though. I definitely stand in the "the game looks amazing camp" with a couple caveats.

The game seemed to be running okay for me yesterday outside of crashing, now whenever I try to boot the game after the splash screen I just get a white screen and it just stays that way till I close the program...

Bit of a longshot, but try signing out of and then back into the Xbox app. Something similar happened to me with Rise of the Tomb Raider.

helped a brotha out on multiple separate occasions!
I ran into the first live action cutscene earlier today and it stuttered bad. To the point where I just closed the game out because I thought something was wrong.
Just did this too. Thought it was maybe a network issue on my end or something but it's only happening with QB. Then I remembered something about the episodes being made available for download so I look that up only to find out the download option is only available on the Xbox version. By the time I gave up searching for a fix and just finished watching the stuttering mess of the episode I was too frustrated to continue playing the actual game.

The weird thing is that the 'previously on' section plays back fine, so maybe it is some kind of weird buffering issue?

I'm playing in not-quite-full-screen to get performance to a playable level. What's bothering me now is that the earpiece my character has looks like it's perpetually time stuttering, like the physics were at 30fps and I'm running higher so it's freaking out or something lol. Same thing happened in the opening minutes when he picked up the cell phone for a call, the phone would lag behind him and then teleport to catch up.

Same thing happen to me with the ear piece. I just left it as some time travel side effects lol instead of trying to figure out what was causing it

What resolution and framerate is this at? I'm wondering whether to just run this at 1080p or if I could pull of 1440p with my 980 Ti and 6700k and still keep ultra settings.

1080p.

There's no point dialling back settings, as you aren't getting a smooth frame rate either way. Ultra feels as smooth to play as the lowest pre-set to me.

Ahh I see. I just finished Act I on 1440p on Ultra at a 30fps cap. Pretty happy with it. It's not perfect, but the game is plenty playable.

The game runs fine for me. I'm fine with playing at 30FPS at Xbox setting, I just want to play the damn game. The only thing keeping me from playing it is the stuttering live action sections. Seriously, is there any fix for that? That stuff is completely unwatchable with it chopping up every 15 seconds.

Yeah pretty much this. Its happening to me too. It sucks since the live action sections aren't bad at all.

So, I finished Act 1 and boy this game is rough. IQ and performance is all over the place. Walking sections feels worse than action sections, everything is blurry as fuck. Sometimes game looks gorgeus and sometimes it looks like shit, no consistency in framerate either and live action stuff hitches like crazy. It is really unfortunate, because effects in this game are fucking nuts, story is interesting and gameplay is fun. Looks like they will not change that rendering technique, so we kind of stuck with current IQ (I hope they will improve framerate at least)

My PC:
GTX 980
i7-4790k
16GB RAM
Installed on SSD
My Settings: 1080 Utra preset with lowered to medium volumetric light and shadows

Enjoying the game and not having an issue with image quality but the instant aim when you press LT is kinda driving me nuts...very minor thing though.

What's Xbox settings...medium?

Yup medium settings. What's worst is that even people with 980 Ti's Luke myself can't get a solid 60 fps even with the absolute lowest settings.

I think "Quantum Broke" works. Lol The game is a technical tour de force in some ways and a tour de farce in others.

980 ti owners, what setting are you guys running?

Ultra for most, but I turned one down to medium that I'm forgetting that seemed pretty taxing for little benefit. I want to say it was Screen Space Reflections, will check later. Playing at 1440p, it's mostly 60 though has some dips at times.

There's no way you are hitting 60fps.

I am. I used that tool someone else posted about earlier to show the OSD, Action something or other. It's not locked 60 FPS like I said, but it is on average (I do have a HRF monitor so I'm not dealing with the weird refresh bug that lowers to 50 FPS like the Digital Foundry article posted).

Edit: Some settings on high, SSR on medium like I said, so not full ultra, thought I had that as the preset, and I turned off AA because it looks like butts. When testing with the overlay, SSR was one of the biggest performance hits and didn't seem to be adding much.

I was about to say... Even on 1080p constant 60 is hard to hit... Nevermind, 1440p.

Didn't say constant.

No idea. The Remedy's PR is on vacation, judging from one of his last tweets. I hope the rest of the team is working on it.

It would be great if you could post the name of the tool.

The tool I used is Action!

Unfortunately to use the in game overlay as far as I call requires you to record so it's going to hit performance a bit, but it can be useful for finding what settings are causing the biggest hits.

I've been playing on Xbone and really enjoying--- just started on PC with my free code and expected somewhat poor performance even on a titan X and played 5 minutes...

uninstalled.

Tried it on pc today. 4790k/r9 290x, can't seem to figure out how to see FPS since afterburner/rivatuner won't work with this. running the game maxed, frametime is a mess, but it feels responsive like its playing around 50fps.. game actually has a lot of potential to be stunning if they can fix the resolution thing. cause it does look good. and it seems to be fun.

30 fps lock makes this thing run like shit. medium settings at 1080p, it runs ok

not sure if i should continue playing or wait for a patch

Got the game working again on my PC, the .ini file was cleared somehow, I removed that from the folder and the game launches for me now. Also I'm not experiencing the crashing I was previously either after downclocking my CPU a little, seems my previous overclock wasn't completely stable.

Weird, I'm playing with 30fps lock on and it's smooth as any other locked 30fps game.

Exact same spec as you but the 3570k. And that's on Ultra preset BTW.

The cap doesn't work properly. I will have strings of time when I get proper frame pacing at 33.3ms, but it's not consistent at all. Getting proper consistent frame times is impossible in my experience.

My 780ti is struggling with a mix of high and ultra settings, the stutter is unbearable, I had to drop everything to medium to be able to play the first chapters.

The game doesn't look like it should chew up my rig like that, I'll wait for the patch.

Boy, this game is just beautiful downsampled from 4k. That frame pacing though...ugh.

Finally got to try it.

All gameplay, no cutscenes.
