Eh, I think Gears 3 looks the best, Gears 1 a close second, Gears 2 last.

UE is rough the first few hours, but starts to shine later on. Do like the darker, more horrific tone of it all.


But Gears 3 is just so damned nice looking, and it's got a smoothness and a cohesiveness that most games never touch. Even a gen later.
 
Gears 1 and 2 has darker and more serious atmosphere which is absent in 3 and Judgement..Gears 4 looks even more colourful and childish than 3..I am not fan of that..
 
I mean, I'm all for the darker atmosphere, but colorful=childish? Really?

Characters look more childish to me..Look at Marcus ,Cole ,Baird , Carmine , Dom etc in Trilogy and compare them with new characters especially girls..They look like teenagers compared to original characters..They are also thinner and lighter..I don't like that at all..

They look less cartoonish in Gears 4 than in previous games. But I guess looking more like an actual human being means it's more childish. Makes sense.

I can see where he is coming from. Their ridiculous proportions was a charming aspect of the games. I loved that they all look like super mutant linebacker(Cole is GOAT)

Are you using a 1080p monitor/TV? Because there's a stark difference between Gears 3 and 4.

Yeah I'm on my monitor. I'm really not seeing a big difference. Course it might be readily apparent in motion

Geez, this game. I'm either totally stomping the other team for a few matches or I'm getting completely wrecked repeatedly. So far I'm digging it, though. It's just more Gears, which is good imo. I'd like to see a smaller map or two. Hopefully I can get a chance to try the drop shot. Haven't picked it up yet.

I'm in the Gears 3 final looks more appealing than Gears 4 Alpha/Beta crowd.


The lighting looks better, atmospherics, and despite probably using less triangles, appears to have more varied and complex geometry.

Agree with this. Gears 1 and its characters had an amazing charm to them. Huge, disproportionate dudes that were brimming with charisma (all different types). So what if it wasn't realistic. It had its own style.

These newer characters and skins just look like your generic build-a-soldier in some cog garb. Meh.

are you really doing this? at least wait until the game is out and you've seen more than 3 maps from a beta.

Even then, gears 3 doesn't look better than the beta.


I'm all for waiting until it improves, but the beta is for feedback, both in gameplay, and graphics/Performance.


Right now, feedback of the graphics are that they need work. They are not good enough yet, whether by design/incomplete, or because of the 60fps sacrifice.

Gears 3 completed, looks way more polished and visually appealing than the beta. Despite it having some advantages, like Resolution/SSR/55fps etc.

I am a graphics whore, who has doubled dipped on a on of games this gen, full price, solely to play the games at higher resolution.

That said, despite the gap in resolution and Framerate, Gears 3 still impresses. Gears 4 isn't there yet. We hope it gets there, thus are providing feedback to that effect.

We understand the game isn't done.

Anyone notice the hammerburst sound getting ridiculously loud and echo-y the more you shoot it?? Like it's gonna blow my speakers loud!! I can hear the hammerburst clearly from across map, its that loud!

I hear the retro lancer is being brought back?? God, why? Why bring the most op and broken gun back and nerf the hammer burst like this? Everyone I've played with so far has complained that the hammer burst needs to go back to the way it was in gears 3.

Graphic and other minor issues aside I am fn impressed on how well the game plays. Final game should be gears 3 level of smoothness and fun if this beta is anything to go by. Well done Coalition, well done. I was HIGHLY skeptical after the Judgement multiplayer fiasco and I am glad to be proven wrong.

Did I miss something? When did they say they don't? Every beta/alpha I've ever been a part of has welcomed any constructive feedback, whether it be about network issues, glitches, graphical issues, performance issues, UI problems, etc.

Huh? Do you not know what the point of a beta is? Lots of MP games have changes aesthetic and visual components because of fan feedback.

So constructive feedback according to you two is the gears 3 looks better than this beta/alpha? I'm well aware of what a beta is and the feedback you should be giving but complaining about graphics in a beta isn't part of it.

Because a large amount of players complained on Epic's forums that Gears was too dark and you couldn't see shit..especially in MP. It's the entire reason why absolutely none of Gears 2 maps were set in dark. Even maps with lightning and rain (like Subway, Mansion) ended up going bright and daytime. Gears 3 tried to change that a bit and tried some dark maps but none were as dark except maybe Bulletmarsh revision. If you can find the neogaf thread for Gears 4 reveal you'll see half of the people complaining how they can't see anything.

Although part of the reason for Gears 1 being so monotone was due to technical limitations of the lighting in first gen UE3 (it was the first UE3 game too so alternatives weren't discovered just yet), Gears 2 improved the lighting engine and as a result became more colourful. Gears 3 used even more advanced lighting with GI which meant even dark areas got lit.

They may prioritize them over things we didn't notice they added, or go about optimization in a different way. Or maybe they are all effects that just don't have the "on switch" flipped for this build. Whatever the case, It will be a tough balance to strike given the 1080p 60fps target on XBO, but I think they can do it. They did a really great job with UE for the most part, and that was their first project.

I think if the final version looks like Ultimate Edition (with object motion blur at 60FPS, this I want !!) then it'd be alright and most would be happy.
But then again Unreal Engine 3 is a lot more mature and developed engine than UE4.

Not necessarily true, there could be some effects that they removed thinking people won't notice it but they do...object motion blur for example (which is missing from Ultimate Edition's MP as well) and the blocky maps.
 
I've only played a handful of games so far. Took me a wile to adjust back from Gears UE rigid movement and roadie running. The beta feels good. I think the active cooldown is a happy compromise.

It is a beta, but yeah the graphics are okay or whatever. I don't really care about graphics to be honest. Framerate seems a little choppy but to be expected.

It plays like Gears which is all I really wanted. Need to put more time into it but I'm digging it so far.

The Swarm models look great but then I'm not feeling the new Cog characters. But once they confirm that Locust/classic cog skins are in I'll be satisfied.

Maps seem too big. But 5v5 needs some breathing room too. I would've been much happier to stick with 4v4 from Gears 1 and UE.

Overall I'm impressed.

I like how they manage to keep the gnasher sponge nearly consistent across all gears. I had a fair few games last night where people should of died but just sponge. Also witnessed myself doing it too where people should of killed me but I took no damage at all and just 1 shot them.

I'm on the fence with this one at the minute, I like it better than UE though, just having the control back over wall bouncing really makes the game more fluid.
 
Hard to get used to roadie running. I keep using my right stick to move the camera to which way i wanna rodie rub but i have to remember to use the left stick. lol

It seems right centered on his head then suddenly he is under the shot just one frame forward. If you save those two images and A-B them it's like he teleports. Man aiming in this is so confusing.
its because the bullets are coming out of the barrel rather then the screen. Your gun its too far left and you only shot his ear.

If this was ultimate edition you would have nailed him

How is using left stick+A more difficult to get used to than right stick+A considering you control right stick with right thumb which would be busy holding A while roadie running ?

Unless you use tournament or alternate control scheme.

I have the elite controller and A is mapped to the left paddle so i always have my thumbs on the sticks.

So, you're implying that The Coalition is more likely to take our feedback and change their art style, something ingrained into the DNA since concept art, and blends with story, graphics, level design, etc. than they are to say, throw OBMB back in?

Ive had a few but it is a ton better than Gears UE. Im having it happen rarely now. I cant say if its better than Gears3 sponge or not because its been too long since ive last played it and you know our memory likes to remember things differently.

I literally busted out laughing when this happened to me though haha

I do love the Gears4 beta though. Its very good. There is a few things i think they need to tweak but ill take that to the Gears forums. Oh and the Dropshot is amazing. Here is another clip from the other night

please don't do this. Those gifs are 50-100mb a piece and slow the thread to an absolute crawl.

it also sucks for people on mobile because they take data, are totally unwatchable and will probably crash the tab. Just link to the video.

I understand the concern for mobile data, and data limits in general, so ill go back to making my own so I can keep the size down.
