Amazon [UK] blocks non-Prime members from buying certain video games

Pretty stupid on Amazon UK's part to paywall stuff like this (also didn't this start happening to Amazon USA recently, albeit not on a large scale). It's almost as if they think they have customers by the balls, which according to a lot of the posts I'm seeing here, is hilariously off-point.

If Amazon Canada start doing this too, I'll be taking my business to the tens of other shops that sell video games.

bish gets all the credit :)
This has been happening for awhile, and not just for videogames. We've had threads here and there's tons of people defending it.

They don't even give 20% off on new releases like they do in the states.
If they did I would get the subscription but atm I guess if I need anything that's locked to Prime members only I can get my friend to order it to me

sorry but...
I'm using prime in italy for 20 eur.. for more than that, it just won't cut it..
AND we (whole eu) we don't get the 20% off preorders like america..
AND uk is now restricting some items, and i suppose other amazon national shop will follow in suite...

we had a good run together amazon, but if this is how you want to dance, i can bring my money elsewhere :)

Weird. It's as if people don't like being called out to clarify their positions on their non-arguments, especially when they realize they've become completely detached from the actual topic. I'd post a clever reaction GIF but I suppose it'd be wasted bandwidth for everyone else.

Just drop it already.

I'm a prime user, but this is BS.
When it comes to games and you live in the UK you should be buying from TheGameCollection anyway. Much superior to Amazon and they have a reward system. Check them out if you haven't already. You frequently get the games early too.

I use Prime (only because Students get it cheaper), but this paywall is a joke.

I'd certainly go elsewhere if I didn't already have a subscription.

For the sake of avoiding derailment, could you phrase this in the form of something applying to the topic?

It's at a much larger scale by virtue of applying to non-video games as well.

This is now a double whammy of stupidity this week that has put me right off Amazon, the first being a book I pre-ordered almost 6 months ago wasn't going to be shipped until 5 days after release because reasons.

Any recommendations for other companies either with "generous" returns policies like Amazon, or that package their games well? I stopped using ShopTo and a couple of other places because they toss everything in crappy jiffy bags even if it's a fragile collectors edition. TGC also looks terrible, they have a grand total of 3 brand new Vita games in stock.

It was only a matter of time before Amazon started doing something like this.

It's like every major corporation has to go through a phase of being arseholes by seeing how far they can push things at some point in their existence.

Going to cancel all of my video game pre-orders I have with them.
Did they really thing this would be a good idea and would actually get people to pay for Prime?
Fuck off, Amazon.

That time has been months now. You likely don't hear about it because restrictions aren't indefinite and their own listings usually aren't the cheapest to begin with.

Okay, well just because Amazon ship it to you and it's in a warehouse owned by them doesn't mean you're buying it directly from them. The topic at hand is talking specifically about Amazon and THEIR stock. It's not a difficult concept and the information in the OP is accurate.

Good job Amazon. Now I'm going to go and cancel all my pre-orders with you.

Their aggressive campaign to get me to sign up to Prime was already annoying me. This is the final straw.

So you're saying there would be no distinction from these statements?

Amazon [UK] blocks non-Prime members from buying certain video games
and
Amazon [UK] blocks non-Prime members from buying certain video games directly from Amazon

Are there not posts in this thread under the impression that people from the UK literally can't purchase certain games on Amazon?

It is new to us and it's not clickbaity, it's flat out fucking wrong. I don't give a shit if it was in other countries before, it doesn't stop it being incredibly shitty now.

Now if it was "Games such as Star Fox with a metascore of 72 are blocked from non-prime members", it would be a different conversation.
It isn't new to the UK either.

That much is even said in the article - "Amazon has extended it's...". It's been done on other items before.

And also your final line is a silly argument.

If you believe their move is wrong then it is wrong no matter the game.

In America, they still allow you to buy the same item as Prime members, but not as the same cheaper price. If they start making items exclusives to Prime members, I might have to start shopping elsewhere. I'm already buying my games from Best Buy instead due to Gamer's Choice Club.

Edit: I might be wrong :(

The last line was a joke about Polygon's actual click bait article about Platinums director stepping down.

it actually relates to returning or replacement of products too. it works differently if it's fulfilled by amazon, and bought from amazon. i received a watch from a "fulfilled by" seller that wasn't what i ordered, but i couldn't replace it, i had to send it back for a refund...then rebuy it. at which point the price had increased.

if that watch had been bought direct from amazon i could have replaced it for the original price i paid.

Sorry I forgot threads live and die by thread titles alone because people can't be bothered to read all the information at hand. Stop getting so hung up on the thread title, which isn't clickbait by the way. Go look at some actual clickbait headlines and take note of the differences.

Plus, that only accounts for fulfilment items - which they don't have for all items.

Yes but the thread title is clickbait :(

I thought it'd be worth more credit to the article writer than just saying it was wrong as they did the due diligence to realize the title taken literally wouldn't be correct themself.

I just cancelled the one game preorder I have with them and sent an email feeding back why this is just a bad move and that I won't be buying games from them for the forseeable future.

You can send feedback email here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/contact-us. The options are:
  • "Prime and more"
  • "Other non-order questions"
  • "Give Amazon feedback"
Will add that to the OP too.

I'd love to know why prime in the UK is £79 a year yet prime in Japan is only £24 a year that's a huge difference. Thankfully i don't buy domestic games so Amazon UK can't do shit to bother me. I'll start been more concerned when Japan follows suit but seeing as Japan is it's own entity compared to the rest of Amazon i'm not too worried.

Amazon prime UK includes lovefilm/prime video, that streaming service is £72+ a year if you looked at Netflix or whatever as an alternative
Is that the same in Japan?

Why the fuck are so many of you using amazon?

Are you new to the internet or something you're a google search away from having your mind blown.

seriously for supposedly tech savy and in the know people sometimes you all just go right off the fucking deep end,

Amazon doing shit things? FUCK EM shop elsewhere.

It's a fools errand, if people can't be bothered to read things and form an opinion based on a thread title then more fool them?

It includes it, but I bet if Amazon offered an option with just Prime delivery, the amount of subscribers to "full" Prime would plummet. I have Prime currently but I barely ever watch anything on Prime Video, I certainly wouldn't miss it.

Wow. They actually went full Microsoft PR on us.

knowing Amazon's customer service, this response came from somewhere far down the latter that might get fired for this.

For me the real news is that Prime is 80 pounds a year in the UK.
I knew about 100 USD in the US but thought it might be because they offer more prime movies and have higher shipping costs in a huge country like the USA. Here in germany Prime is 50€ a year, I've been a Prime member since day one when it was 30€. Already wanted to jump off when they forced prime video (in german only, no original english version, no subtitles) on you and asked for 20€ more. I don't care for any of the new stuff like music, online picture space, better and earlier discount deals... if they'd ask for 80 or 100€, I'd cancel my subscription immediately. 80 pounds is just ridiculous.

And what one guy said 3 pages back: Give us the 20% off pre-orders in germany too. No, don't! Just keep it at 50€ a year and give us language and subtitle options like netflix (and probably any other video on demand service out there).

It includes it, but I bet if Amazon offered an option with just Prime delivery, the amount of subscribers to "full" Prime would plummet. I have Prime currently but I barely ever watch anything on Prime Video, I certainly wouldn't miss it.
Boom! Absolutely.
