Here's to U, Wii U

Honestly I only bought my Wii U for Mario 3D World. One of my favorite Mario games, ever. Seriously.

The fact I got Bayonetta 2, Splatoon, Mario Maker, a good version of Tekken Tag, Mario Kart 8, Tropical Freeze, and some good eshop games? Icing on the cake.

that's not what I asked lol

Sorry. I agree it does bring a lot of fresh ideas to the TPS genre. It's a really great game & one of the best on Wii U, IMO. Though I do wish the online was a bit more with the times, so to speak.

that's a fair complaint and not to just go on the defense but I feel like it's really obvious why those choices were made, which is the Wii U being the Wii U

hindsight 20/20 but Splatoon was a huge risk for Nintendo and its success wasn't assured

all of that is to say I personally give it a pass because of the reality of the console it was on but if the sequel has the same issues I'll be more annoyed, especially if they wait months before adding standard features

I had a lot of good times with my Wii U. It has a bunch of instant classics that are must-haves for any serious gamer's library. The focus is more on polish and execution than new concepts, save for Splatoon which, pace SUPERHOT, is the most innovative shooter I've played in years. A great console which will leave fond memories, and to which I will undoubtedly return for many years as I randomly return to backlog games.

I still need to get Rodea. Guess I'll have to swallow my pride and pay full price to ensure that I get the version of the game with the Wii game bundled.

I hope you're referring to the Virtual Console available in Wii mode. For me, Wii U's VC has been a massive disappointment.

If you're in Europe, Wii U VC has been nothing short of amazing. Almost everything in 60Hz for the first time, many "first time in this region" debuts, lots of rarities. Wii VC can't hold a candle to that. Only in the quantity department, of course, thanks to there being more platforms available. Shame about SEGA and Konami...

Don't care for quantity because I usually don't buy more than 12 games or so per console anyways.

Thus, quality matters most to me, and I must say that the Wii U had it in spades.

Super Mario 3D World might be my favourite game ever, and Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U are all in my top 20 for sure.

Also huge fan of Pokken, Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Pikmin 3, NSMBU, Yoshi's Woolly World, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Really, I'm more than satisfied with how the Wii U turned out.

I'm in NA. The Wii VC for us was pretty fantastic.

Thank U Wii U, you were not so bad.
Here is for the upcoming remasters and transferred games, the Wii U still lives on into the next generation.

Konami supported Wii U Virtual Console pretty well... if we forget about Hudson. Hudson's back catalogue was the best part of Wii Virtual Console, and it's a shame Konami haven't released it on Wii U. (In the West, at least; in Japan, they single-handedly created PC Engine segment of Wii U Virtual Console.)

and the Japan-only Famicom sequel to Excitebike

Very sad omission from otherwise superior EU Wii U Virtual Console :(

Oh, you went back to your old av. Nice!

Anyway, despite some missteps in NES/64 emulation, I will say that the GBA and DS inclusion is excellent. So there are some aspects of it worthy of lauding. Including the inclusion of save states and button arrangement. But Wii VC is unbeatable for those of us in NA, for sure. The breadth and selection is incredible.

Eh, it's bit like the Dreamcast, but with a tenth of the ambition. Yeah, the Wii U has Smash, but the Dreamcast had prime Capcom treating the system like a second party and literally dozens of great fighting games.

The system has a lot more in common with the N64, actually.

Agreed on all of that. Even the Gamecube had a better outcome with its Capcom support and Metroid Primes. Also the Dreamcast managed its early generation jump in far more impressive ways. Still, I bought a refurb Wii U last year for Xenoblade X, Bayonetta 2, and Fatal Frame. Solid enough.

My Konami/SEGA comment was specifically in reference to the absent platforms (PCE/TG16+SMS+SMD)

Splatoon being a huge risk is such an odd statement. The game was released in the midst of the shooter genre dominating the industry and was also a new online IP that Nintendo fans had been craving for.

Bayonetta 2 is something I would consider a huge risk

Sure!

In all honesty I don't think it's been a massive disappointment. There are certainly a LOT of disappointing aspects of it that are hard to ignore:

-Not account based, so no "cross-buy" so purchases don't transfer.
-Lack of Gamecube games
-The whole regional distribution aspect of it is all wrong (NA, EU, JP, etc...)
-Lack of GBA and DS games on 3DS

But it's still a joy and at least we have it.

Thanks to this thread i remembered to check the local game sites and found a new copy of Project zero/Fatal frame MoBW special edition for 70 euros. I'm pretty happy about that find since usually they go from 120-150 euros new/used here.

The Wii U was a crappy main system but it was definitely an amazing compliment to the other platforms. Especially if you're rocking the PC/WiiU combo.
I had and still have a great time with it. I just wouldn't have been happy with it if it were the only gaming platform I owned.

Good post, console had its flaws, but it brought the fun.

Here's to Mario Chase. Quite possibly the most fun I've had this generation. Never thought I could get 4 of my non gamer buddies sitting around a TV screaming and yelling. Every time they came into town for a basketball game the first thing we'd do is have a few beers and play some Mario Chase before heading out. When they started asking if we could play I knew the Wii U could be something special with its asymmetric game play.

Pretty cool system in its own way. Splatoon, Smash, and Mario Maker made the system worth it for me. Sucks that it ended up in its current situation. Here's to NX starting off better. Can't wait to see what it'll do.
I think there's a bit of that at play but also Nintendo has a very staunch core Base. It doesn't really speak that much when you sell 13 million and the software sales because the market for their platforms is usually very unique unto itself with many likely only only that as their only platform. And that's with competition that is clearly Superior in the software but it just goes to show you how much Equity Nintendo has with their base.

Only a handful of those games are notably good exclusives, the rest are either remasters, multi plats, or spin offs of main games. I wanted to like the Wii U, I really did. But the library just doesn't appeal to me.

Give me a full 3D Mario, Zelda, and Metroid. My opinion would change.

Hindsight has nothing to do with it... The game hit many beats that allowed it to succeed in this current game climate. We shouldn't look at the opinions of gamers on forums as some kind of barometer of success. Xenoblade X would have been successful if that was the case.

It was a pretty sweet ride, even if some IPs didn't get its deserved attention early enough, like Zelda - or at all, like Metroid and F-Zero - the console did get its fair share of great games.

Here's hoping the NX hits the ground running - and bring some backwards compatibility while we're at it.

in this instance hindsight has everything to do with it haha. it's easy to say something wasn't a risk after it sells 4.5ish million copies. hell, look at how Nintendo handled their online modes. it's pretty clear that the game wildly surpassed internal expectations as well as external expectations.

i don't think it got nothing to do with the system. Cod ghosts on wiiu have a lot of stuff people complained about splatoon, like voice chat, the hability to change gear anytime, private matchs and so for it.

I think, with the exception of private matches, the decisions are quite deliberate and i don't think they will adress those in the next game.

I was talking more about the player base on the Wii U and decisions like the map and mode rotations coupled with the fact that Splatoon was a risky venture and it selling as well as it did wasn't guaranteed

I agree with that the latter, i was just talking about the online critique. I can totally see Nintendo doing the exact same thing in the sequel, with the exception of a couple of those.

I absolutely love some of the games on the WiiU, but sadly I don't think I've managed to actually finish any for one reason: I absolutely loathe the GamePad. It's large, clunky, heavy, and I'm always afraid I will break it, which would basically brick the system because I wouldn't pay $100+ to replace it. Ironically, the WiiU probably supports a wider array of first-party input devices than any other system out there, but inevitably you will need to go through the GamePad to use them. When I sit down to use a console, I am much more motivated to turn on any other system because I won't have to mess with the GamePad. I don't even keep it charged any more, which is yet another barrier to actually using the WiiU.

I love the WiiU and its games, but I hate the GamePad so much it basically killed the system for me. Throughout its lifecycle I kept hoping Nintendo would provide some options in the UI to lessen reliance on the GamePad, but it never happened.

EDIT: It dawned on me that my post goes against the spirit of the thread a bit, which is to celebrate what works about the WiiU rather than gripe about what doesn't. My apologies.

This is my collection of physical games. I also have Wind Waker HD but digitally.

I had Nintendoland because it came with the Wii U on launch. I sold it. It was a good decision, I don't regret it.

Really enjoyed the Wii U. Some games were disappointing with iffy controls but It will go down as an over looked console with expensive games. I own 30+ retail games on Wii U and the third party games were not as bad as the bean counters made them out to be. Splinter Cell Blacklist has some nice Wii U features that I enjoyed and Need for Speed Most Wanted was fun to play as well.

I am 43, and I've owned every Nintendo console from the NES on. That said the combination of my overall disappointment for the Wii and the Wii U, plus other factors (less time to play, my preference to play on other consoles, etc.) has finally broke me of my Nintendo fanboyism. I will always love Nintendo, but Wii U if you are anything, you are the last Nintendo console I will ever buy.

To be clear there are some really good games on the Wii U, but subjectively it wasn't worth it to me.

Also going by my enjoyment of each system I would rank them like this (take away my time with Perfect Dark and Goldeneye the NES would jump the N64):

SNES > N64 > NES > Gamecube > Wii > Wii U

Despite the low sales and sparse releases, Wii U remains my most played console this gen, and a big improvement over Wii, which I fell off of after Brawl came out.

Splatoon, MK8, Smash 4, and XCX are all contenders for some of the best games I've ever played. 3D World is my favorite 3D Mario since 64.

And off-TV play remains an awesome feature especially for VC games.

Wii U's poor reception only confirms my fear that my tastes are becoming increasingly niche. Hopefully NX can bring another creative renaissance for my favorite developer.

Explain why LBP3 flopped then.

Didn't that release in the same month as:

GTAV
Assassin's Creed Unity
Call of Duty
Dragon Age Inquisition
Shadow of Mordor
Far Cry 4

It wasn't really like there were no big name games to purchase on PS4 in 2014.

Solid selection, Tropical Freeze is the best Nintendo Selects title IMO, great price for a great game.

I mean...my son likes playing Minecraft on it, so I'm building a world with tricks and traps and treasure for him to explore. It's more work than I thought, seeing as how I'm a rookie.

Anyway, here's to the WiiU. It had some great games, but fucked if it makes me want to continue buying Nintendo's products.

Wii U had some good games but to say it had the best library of this generation :/ You are clearly being a fanboy.

The distinction of having the best library goes to PC/Steam. The Wii U serves as the best complimentary experience to it which neither the XB1 nor the PS4 can offer due to their overlapping and inferior versions.

My favs on the Wii U were Nintendoland and Splatoon. Oh and Wii Party U.

Those games are the ones I put the most time into.
