Uncharted 4 spoiler free early copy impressions

For those who care about technical & performance analysis:

Game is practically locked 30 FPS all the time. The only times it dips are during big explosions for half a second to a second.

Either the hitching I mentioned at the beginning of the day was an incredibly rare occurrence that hasnt repeated itself since or my PS4 rebuilding the database fixed the issue.

Loading times are incredibly quick. My relative comparison here is TLOU remastered. The initial loading is much faster then TLOUs and of course, there's no loading afterwards.

Nothing else is coming to mind right now. If anyone has questions, I'd be happy to answer as I'm done playing for the day.

5 hours and 40 minutes playtime and I'm mid way through chapter 10.
So far from the 5 hours you have played, would you say there's been "OMG!!!!! This gaaeemmmmmmeee" moments?

On a scale from 1-10, how much would you say is in the game from what ND has shown us across the three gameplay demonstrations(PSX, E3 and the previews last month)? Has there been so much shit you saw that you couldn't even fathom was in the game?

Well, the most recent "this game" moment was in chapter 10 which was shown off by ND. The video footage does not do this level justice on a purely visual level. My jaw just kept dropping at how big it is with how it looks.

Gameplay wise, that animation blending in melee brawls legit has me in shock. Early on in the game is a melee fight that if I watched in a video form, you could probably tell me was scripted and I'd believe you.

As for what we've seen versus what we haven't. I'd say there's been brief glimpses of about half of what I've seen. There's a lot that was kept under wraps. And probably the thing that was done most well by ND was how context less the story and other trailers are. Those trailers really don't tell you anything about the story.

On a side note, if you wanted any more evidence in the cut scene vs gameplay graphics debate. Just watch this GIF. It'll only be a spoiler if you haven't watched any of the trailers etc, otherwise this scene (as a cut scene) is in there.

Drake and Elena - Gameplay to Cut Scene transition

Plus a fairly compressed JPEG capture from the scene.

JPEG of the scene from the GIF

Dude I believe you.I never doubted that. :p I am just surprised at those who still question that. The transition is even smoother than the Order 1886.

I'm about 5 hours in too.

None of what I have played has been mindblowing scenes or set pieces. Just very grounded, realistic ideas and scenarios. But they're executed and designed so well, so fun and polished, and the cutscenes and script and characters are so good that I am enjoying it.

What's been wowing me is the graphics, not the areas or what I'm doing.

I'm finally getting into some good traversal/exploration gameplay and it's not as great and open as ND was selling it yet but im just 5 hours in and probably just whetting my appetite with a salad before the main dish.

Most of what I'm playing was never shown in demos. It's great.

Well, it's still early seeing as you have at least a good chunk left.

Do I play this on normal or hard? If Normal is just a little challenging, I might be OK with starting on it since I'm going to be replaying this game minimal 3 times by the looks of it.

Chapter 9 had a really great setpiece and just a fantastic ending to it. But I can't really say much without being spoilery about it.

I hope the rest of the setpiece are similar. Scripted stuff is happening but gameplay is still at the forefront. More collapsing house and less cruise ship.

Normals good. Not too tough but a good enough challenge. It's not a walk in the park.

Another thing they haven't fixed since TLOU is the immersion breaking partner AI. They still stomp around like a motherfucker in stealth segments in plain sight :l

I'm finding hard great. It's almost a little too easy for a "hard" more but I'm just at the beginning and I'm liking the challenge balance in this mode.

Eh I dont see any way they can do that and not be annoying for the player.

Lol. It's nigh on difficult to try and do both AI awareness for you and your partner without that affecting gameplay. I mean they said it might happen but less frequently.

PLS ND don't let Sony ruin the epic finish of the series by making a movie about it even if it is CGI. Let it rest in peace with the best memories for all fans.

Just finished the game. I'll give the single player experience a 7.5-8/10

I'll explain tomorrow but right now I gotta sleep.

You wot m8. Fair enough. Are you the person that only liked multiplayer games though? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Would you guys playing it say that it looks better than The Order?, equal?, a tad less impressive?

After seeing all what has been posted, I cna confirm that Uncharted 4 is much better than the Order 1886. You know, many can compare games IQ by posting still pics of supersampled Tomb Raider, Super sampled Quantum Break, The Order 1886 but in reality they must be compared as a package. Uncharted 4 has the ebst physics in any game released now, it is even more impressive than HL2 at its time, also it packs up a large amount of tiny details that you can't find in otehr games which are very exclusive to real life. The animations is the best in any game and there is no doubt in that.

No. I don't "only" like multiplayer games.

But the single player wasn't worth the hype for me. It was good, but not great. The previous Uncharted's have it beat.

Oh, and Druckmann's a liar.

"Divisive" my ass...

I think this is actually going to be one of the things devs start to nail this gen. MGSV, The Order, and now Uncharted all do it so well.

Cool man. Its your opinion and everyone should respect that.

I go in with insanely high expectations when playing a game so I am curious how I rank this Uncharted. If its a more grounded experience then I am sure I would prefer to it to the others.

I feel like you get to the "meat" of the game faster in U2 than here. By Nepal I was already getting grenades and rocket launchers, and here I'm at chapter 9 and still stuck without that, just basics.

I'm wondering how fondly I will look back at that in later replays. Hmm.

Just some impressions:

I am about 4 1/2 hours into the game and just started chapter 8.

I own a 4K TV and primarily game on my PC with two Titan X graphics cards. I keep my PS4 for exclusive games and as a Blu-ray disc player. When I say that Uncharted 4 is one of the most graphically impressive games I've ever played, I really mean it. This game is incredible in its graphical fidelity. Even most games at 4K resolution can't match it. This is the most impressive console game ever made, and it holds its own against most PC games on ultra settings in 4K.

The story is good so far. It's good, not great. Better than UC3 and UC2, but not as good as TLOU. I feel ND hit a real high water mark with TLOU, and I'm pretty sure that UC4 isn't going to be able to beat it.

They being said, I'm only 1/3 through the game, so that could change, but at this point that seems increasingly unlikely.

The animations are incredible. The melee combat is seamless and jaw dropping, unlike the bizarre and clunky melee of the previous games.

The pacing is intentionality glacial at first, and it really services the story. I love the pacing. It's a bold move by ND to not throw players into the action, and it really serves the story and characters.

Gunplay is snappy and responsive and not nearly as floaty as before. It's perfect, actually.

The game is shaping up to be the best Uncharted game yet. But for those that prefer TLOU and its tone and direction, you may be disappointed.

Regardless, I'm having fun. I just hope gameplay can marry the story and achieve the perfect heights of TLOU. We shall see...

I like how you mentioned that first with super beefy hardware. You went all the way out lmao.

How's the aliasing?

Nah I would not want that at all.

These are 2 different franchises.

The image is consistently sharp with minimal to no aliasing and very sharp textures. I can't believe this game was made on the PS4.

Agreed, but the animation is what really makes it different from ANY other game out there.

The attention to detail in animation is just something most other games don't even bother with, regardless of aliasing or texture quality.

How's the aliasing?

I tried the Uncharted HD Collection. It is the best game on PS4 in terms of AA. Not even one jaggy even in far distances. If ND used the same tech in Uncharted 4 then you will get treated. Some shadows may flicker though but they aren't very noticeable, (this issue may be corrected with the PS4 Neo).
