Crash Bandicoot - The Original PlayStation Mascot

Is the mascot still Sackboy or does Sony not have a mascot anymore?
It isn't, and it never really was. Crash and Sackboy were "once", Toro is forever. :p

On-topic: Very nice retrospective, just like your Sonic and Mega Man ones. I've also been revisiting the first Crash Bandicoot lately, and I'm finding myself agreeing with your points. As a kid, I never realized how much of a "conservative" platformer Crash really is, outside the different perspective. It makes you appreciate the whole thing much more. There definitely is a shortage of such games nowadays. Makes me wonder why indies rarely ever tackle the 3D platformer genre.

Hands down one of the most over rated characters and game series ever made; but I fully understand why people would consider him a mascot and look back fondly on his games.
Crash Bandicoot was a poor mans Mario. Released on a console back in, what, 1996? In terms of quality in games he was up there with Bubsy the Bobcat, Cool Spot, Sypro the Dragon, Croc and x-amount of other characters created back in the nineties.

I had this argument the other day. Crash Bandicoot hasn't been relevant since the PS1, but, the reason why people still harp on about him is because he came about in a new generation, not only of consoles, but also a new generation of kids, kids born in the 90's and maybe even early 00's. These kids owned PS1's, with maybe a few owning an N64 and Sega Saturn as well. If anyone of those kids says to me that they preferred Crash Bandicoot over Mario, Banjo and Kazooie and even bloody Rayman and Sonic then I'd say they were nuts or blinded by nostalgia.
Crash Bandicoot games are mediocre at best and I wouldn't even class them as platform games as there is very little need of any platforming skill at all.

Yes he was a "mascot" back then, but there's a reason why he's been left in the dust, the same reason why we don't see Bubsy the Bobcat, Cool Spot, Zool, Croc or anyone else; they were characters of their era attached to mediocre games.
But, if Crash Bandicoot did return and Playstation players raved about it, then those players should be open to playing fair superior platform games on other systems. We'll see anyway. 40 million PS4 players out there, let's see how much Ratchet and Clank (another mediocre series) sells for as that should give us an indication on how much a new Crash Bandicoot would sell.

Jesus, what did Crash do to you lol? Also, Crash is on the same level as Bubsy? If you'd ever played a Bubsy or Crash game you would know that's not true.

But, if Crash Bandicoot did return and Playstation players raved about it, then those players should be open to playing fair superior platform games on other systems.

Wow, judging a game before it's even announced just because you don't like the original games? I think we've found a new GAF low.

Amazing thread, RK128. Great job.

I hope Shawn Layden is reading Gaf. Yes, Crash Bandicoot IS the original PlayStation Mascot. It would be perfect if they could make a deal with Activision. Do it Shawn! Acquire the Crash Bandicoot IP. Not just a simple game, or something similar. No, buy the IP and bring Crash to Sony, where he belongs.

You would be crazy to think that Activision would give up Crash so easily without letting it go for an extortive amount of money. I could only imagine that they would keep Crash on a leash. No doubt they are working with Sony and possibly even Naughty Dog on something new for Crash's aniversary, but there has also got to be something in it for Activision. Like possible PS4 exclusive Crash Skylanders?

Lumping Crash and Spyro in with Bubsy and Cool Spot? Lol, okay.

Crash isn't a platformer? Did you ever even touch the games? It was more of a platformer than Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie.

And Ratchet's mediocre? Come on.

The Bubsy games were always a mess to me. Mechanically, I don't think any of the Bubsy games really knew what they wanted to be. I always had a soft spot for Cool Spot though (yeah pun), even if it was a 7up mascot. But some of the games were pretty good.

As a mascott character, I would rank Crash somewhere alongside the Rare era of Donkey Kong. And just like the Donkey Kong Country series, the first game was praised for having some impressive graphics but was also criticised for its gameplay. Both have sequels that are generally reguarded as being better than the first game. They both even have highly acclaimed Kart racing games (if you count Diddy Kong Racing, which is part of the DKC series). I don't think Crash was a terrible character, he was alright and a pretty good mascott for Sony, even if he was on loan. I wouldn't quite rank him with Mario... or even Sonic for that matter (when Sonic was good). But maybe I would place him at least one tier down.

The games were 2D platformers at their cores with some 3D elements. As a matter of fact, reviewers in the '90s were really hard on the first Crash game for playing like a 2D platformer and would dock review points because it wasn't innovative enough. Reviewer expectations were so high in 1996, it was like every game had to be a Mario 64 or a Tomb Raider.

A day glo animal with tude decked out in jorts starring in a bad platformer. There is nothing more 90s than Crash Bandicoot.

I played it back in the day, then I went back to Mario 64. Not even close.

But still, a renewal would be cool, the jungle would look great.

I....just don't get this :l.

Just because Crash is popular, that makes his games crap now? I mean, I just don't get that. And Ratchet is FAR from mediocre; its a damn good series of games.

I appreciate that you posted here but, just don't get your points at all sadly.

Crash brings out the worst in some people for some weird reason. It's like they can't let people reminisce or get hyped about it without trying to tell them how 'shit' it was. Drives me up the wall, especially when they're just wrong like that guy was. Crash was on the same level as Bubsy? Now you're just shitposting.

Fun that Sony are landing and securing their stable 'ever-green' mascot franchise this summer. Only took twenty years.
The original was mind-blowing at release.

He's not, because whenever I see his name mentioned I see someone like you saying this. He's an average mascot who got fucking undeservedly screwed and the fans of the first trilogy have wanted a return to form since Twinsanity and we haven't gotten it yet, I thought that was pretty straightforward.

How old were you in 1996?

I'm loving the attention heh.

Listen, I pointed out that I understand why people liked Crash Bandicoot, but you also have to agree that the games are average at best (i'll also take them as being "ok") but they are not great.

I was 16 when the PS1 came out.

Putting Crash up their with Bubsy, Cool Spot, Croc, Spyro etc was more towards them being failed characters or at least characters of their time. Yes I've played all those games (I've played a hell of a lot of games) and yes I agree that Crash games in some ways are better than those titles, but better doesn't mean vastly better or even better as in it makes Crash games great or even good, mediocre and ok at best.

I understand the hype though, you probably grew up play Crash games, I grew up playing most games starting with the BBc Microbit console, but we have to push nostalgia aside with some things and admit that some of those games we loved and played back then were not actually that great.

I give you the benefit of the doubt though, let's hope if a new Crash Bandicoot game does come along that it'll be vastly superior to it's previous outings in every shape and form. If you want to know what I'm more hyped about in terms of announced platform games, well that's Yooka-Laylee.

Your comparison to Crash with other mascots is understandable, as he meet the same fate as them sadly. But he had a great run on PlayStation 1 and when I cover the PS2 games, they are a lot better then most give credit for.

I hope you consider following my Retrospective through the series and that you enjoyed this Retrospective :D!

Really miss classic Crash Bandicoot and wish it would of returned I would of said never but who knows after last E3 anything is possible

Crash Bandicoot 2 is still my fave in the series with Warped a close second, ironically I am still to beat Crash 2 with my save file on 99%

It's been a while since I've played the first Crash but I remember it having more cheap deaths compared to the sequels and I didn't like the save system. It's not bad, but I prefer 2 and 3.

Yes, I get that, I keep saying that I understand why people liked them back then and gave many reasons as to why you probably liked them back then. I played Crash 1, 2 & 3 on PS1, plus Crash Team Racing, I'm not just hating on Crash for the sake of it, I'm giving my opinion (as you point out) as to why I believe they are overrated, not only at the time, but even as a character today. And don't get me started on Crash Team racing, which was once again, an "ok" game but compared to everything else on the market...well...

It was a better game then Mario Kart 64 but didn't match Diddy Kart Racing around its time period. Never played Mega Man Battle & Chase (Mega Man Racer) so will comment on that when I get to it.

Later kart racers post CTR are fantastic (Sonic Racing Series, Mario Kart 7 and 8, Moddnation Racers) too :D.

But they didn't, you gave a civil argument to your points and I agree with some of them, just not all of them. Oh well :). That is what makes us human after all :D!

Crash Bandicoot games are mediocre at best and I wouldn't even class them as platform games as there is very little need of any platforming skill at all.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion on Crash being shit, but you never 100% completed Crash Bandicoot, did you?

Perfecting levels like Sunset Vista and Slippery Climb aren't the hardest things in the world, but very little need of any platforming skill? Please.

TBH Crash was always considered as a poor man's Mario back in the days. Of course people enjoyed it and they games aren't bad at all, but that's how we saw in then. The game improved a ton in the sequel whereas the third was a bit on the safer side.

CTR was the true GOAT Crash game and challenged Mario Karts directly and surpassed them in many areas.

I wasn't going to reply to this, but to let you know, the PS1 was the first console I bought out of my own working cash; before that I owned a Super Nintendo and Sega Megadrive and was by far a Sega "fanboy" back then. I bought my N64 in 1998 when F-Zero X released. I owned all consoles because I love videogames and want the best of all worlds.

Just saw this for the first time. Its amazibgly great! Why was it never used? Its a great parody of the wb 90 cartoon's intros.

I don't think it was trying to be a parody, it seems more like a legit thing. This would have probably been produced around 1995-ish (my guess) and by looking at the animation it may have been storyboarded by a group of animators that worked on Tiny Toon Adventures, Taz-Mania, Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. It really had that feel, so I could imagine that this animaton came out of that tallent pool. This clearly was produced by Universal but I have a feeling that Sony may have vetoed it because they wanted to focus more on 3D to showcase the technical abilties of the PS1. But that is all my guess.

That isn't a guess, that is exactly what happened here. Sony pushed for 3D, so they re-did the opening as a in-engine cut-scene. Would of loved the animated opening/closing to be unlockable extra though.

Something for 100% outside of skipping the final boss would of been great :D.

Great post.

Crash Bandicoot was indeed the mascot for Playstation, and really its Mario. They were really splendid games.

I bought Crash Team Racing, and that was also a great game too and vastly underrated. I really thought it was just as good as Mario Kart, and had a lot of fun playing coop with it I remember with friends and family.

but we have to push nostalgia aside with some things and admit that some of those games we loved and played back then were not actually that great.

I admit that nostalgia aside, i loved crash back then and i still love it now.

Seriously what is with this attitude surrounding crash? "Stop liking what i don't like!"

What the hell is it with people going apeshit or so dismissive when the word "Crash" is brought up? especially in a thread that is to celebrate the franchise.

You are entitled to your opinions but jesus turn it down a notch.
Crash was a decent platformer with or without nostalgia glasses and was fun to play can we for one second be civil without slinging mud on Crash?.

He was a mascot who deserves a revival and I hope it happens.

Might end up making a Retrospective series in the future just on mascot platformers XD! Got a lot to chose from :').

But this idea will be acted on much, much further down the line when my other Retrospectives are finished (Spyro, Crash, Ratchet).

Like you said it's fine to share a dislike when it's done more tactfully. I can admit it had some flaws no game is 100% perfect but it was a genuinely fun and charming series.
