That said, I dont see where it mentioned it was idtech 5 in the game informer article.

Anything would better over the tech in Dishonored 1 if Im being real

--

One interesting thing from the article not in the OP was how there are neutral zones with a bunch of Karnacan civilians where players can get a better sense of the city. You can interact with citizens and learn about the world, discover secret passages, that kind of thing.
Yeah, technically it says "idtech", but IIRC there was an earlier clarification of when they branched off and that idtech6 was a Doom specific thing.

Oh, I skimmed over that part. I'll add it in, thanks.

No offense to you personally, but this is a big misconception about the first one that drives me crazy to hear.

The only way to get the bad ending is kill QUITE a lot of people. That's it. It doesn't enforce anything on you, in fact you can kill several people every single mission and still be fine. When you factor in the powers and all the environmental stuff you have TONS of options that don't involve killing.

It certainly cuts off some of the tools from being used frequently, but you can absolutely engage in some deadly violence and still be fine.

While I don't think the system is THAT good (certainly a lot of room for improvement and clearer choices) it's not this totally punishing and strict set of guidelines that people seem to think it is.
Well, the game did a terrible job of communicating this. IIRC it just says "DON'T KILL A LOT OF PEOPLE OR YOU'LL GET THE BAD ENDING" which made it sound really clear cut. So I tried to be stealthy and then gave up on the game when it turned out I really sucked at being stealthy. I just wanted to play more offensively without being punished for it.

I'll probably go back to D1 at some point and give it another shot, but that definitely left a bad taste in my mouth.

what makes you say that?

can't remember the last time a game ran so solid when downsampling the shit out of it and forcing tons of MSAA and whatever

looked beautiful, ran perfectly

Unreal is cool

Not to detract from the news of Dishonored 2, but I'm really curious what this series will look like 10 years from now. Whether it will have run its course by the end of this sequel or if it'll grow into a much larger franchise. For as many problems as I had with the main narrative of Dishonored, I really loved the backstory written for the game. The lore was pretty extensive for a debut title. I'd love to read a book that took place in the Dishonored universe.

Oh yeah, definitely, it does not communicate that very well. But you have sleep darts, stun mines, and an array of other non lethal things. You can blink out of sight, chokehold guys into unconciousness, and work an occasional lethal kill in there. So you definitely have some leeway. Give it another shot!

And even so the "bad" ending is not THAT bad. The levels change a little to have more rats and more in-fighting in them, so it actually makes for enjoyable gameplay either way.

Corvo voiced by Garret from Thief? Fuckin sold! Love that dudes voice. The other stuff like expanding on non lethal options and more verticality is also great news.

Yep! The game still looks amazing and was very easy to downsample.

I'm assuming Corvo and Emily won't have the exact same script so it's impressive they recorded double the dialogue for the game.

you get what you make out of it

that was the fun in it

I replayed the game 3 times and approached it differently each. kinda made my own difficulty

They also mentioned in the article about difficulty sliders. There are a bunch of them so you can adjust how hard the game is. Like lets say how visible a player is when they are crouching behind cover and peeking around the corner. They also mentioned how, even though might change cuz they're pre-beta as of time of writing, but they always making the base game slightly more challenging to make up for so many tools.

Oh! I hope objective markers are turned off by default. I turned them off and had tons of fun. A friend of mine didn't realize you could turn them off and found the game boring 'cause he'd just always beeline for the objective and felt it was too hand-holdy.

Turn that shit off, please, Arkhane!

I just wanted to play more offensively without being punished for it.
.................
Wow. Just.... lol

I played the original and its DLCs in the proper way and finished with the "Clean Hands", "Cleaner Hands", and "Cleanest Hands" achievements.

Any other way is just plain uncivilized.

10 years? As much as I adore the first game and want this sequel I'd prefer the team do something new after this.

that was my first playthrough

yet my second one was more fun

I played my second one killing everyone while still remaining unnoticed, but purposefully trying to clean the rooms fast by doing crazy shit with all the powers

that's where the game really shines, IMO

a lot of people didnt like it cause they didnt find it methodical enough as a stealth game

it's not really a stealth game, not in the sense of it being slow, at least

and that's what I love about it

it's the ultimate game when it comes to feeling fucking cool as shit

sliding under a table while lookin up to plant a bomb under it as a guard's just about to walk by, just quickly enough for him not to see you

😍

Here's a rough recap of the Game Informer article.

  • Corvo is voiced by Garrett from Thief because Harvey and Raf like Thief and this game has obviously ate its lunch.

I was pretty set on playing as Emily the first time through, but O_O time to play Corvo..

My hype has just been set to maximum.

The idea of putting guards in beds sounds neat. It's something you would rarely do but hopefully they have a lot of small interactions like that.

Ok, that sounds promising.

Yeah, technically it says "idtech", but IIRC there was an earlier clarification of when they branched off and that idtech6 was a Doom specific thing.

Well, we now know that id Tech 6 is just a slightly modified id Tech 5 itself, so the matter of which version underpins Void is practically a po-tay-to/po-tah-to situation. Anywho, it's nice to have confirmation that Void is id Tech-based as I said the other month that the driving philosophy of MegaTextures (per-pixel artistic freedom with a comparatively lower memory footprint -- but namely the first bit) is something that would really shine in a game as visually unique as Dishonored, plus the visual style lends itself well to obfuscating lower-res textures.

"When fans found out they could play Dishonored 2 from the perspective of Emily Kaldwin, they were overwhelmingly positive. "The response was stunning for us," Smith says."
I find this very good to hear. They easily could have tossed her and that part of the story aside for the sequel and had Corvo off doing something else but to have her return and continue the story with her being a playable character, fleshing her out, is awesome and I'm really happy to see people responded positively. You see so much about people not wanting to play as female leads in games so this made me smile.

the rest of the game takes place in Karnaca, which is inspired by Mediterranean European countries and is the birthplace of Corvo.
Could we possibly learn more about Corvo here?

Anton Sokolov is back.
Awesome!

You can do non-lethal aerial takedowns.
Non-lethal/stealth options have been expanded quite a bit to be more up to par with the amount of lethal options.
You can puts guards into beds to avoid suspicion.
There's quick saving/quick load in all versions of the game now along with checkpoints so you don't risk losing much progress at any given time.
Emily also has the Shadow Walk ability which lets her slink into shadows and squeeze into tight places.
ALL of this sounds great. I did my first playthrough of the first game in complete stealth mode only using Blink and not killing a single person and had a blast doing it. These additions and improvements should make it even more fun sneaking in the shadows. Can't wait to my stealth run.

Your base of operations is a boat.
I fucking LOVE boats!

Really looking forward to this. It was something I was really hoping to see at last year's Bethesda E3 show and I got a teaser so that was cool. Pumped to see some gameplay this year.

Pffft. The DLC had you play as Daud, the master assassin. Why would Daud be all nice and merciful to people that get in his way? If anything, doing a Cleanest Hands playthrough as Daud is entirely out of character.

Much like the original game, I started playing it as stealthily/peacefully as possible, then got sick of getting spotted and reloading so I just went in all guns/crossbows blazing and killed everyone without a second thought. Because honestly, Daud wouldn't give a shit. xD And it's just more fun because the game just offers far more tools for violence than stealth (the DLCs a bit less so, but still).

Yes, in a game that lets you play a lot of different ways, I want to be able to play any way I want without getting a shitty anticlimactic ending for it

I don't think this is a controversial, earth shattering thing
Sorry, but that's just dumb. If you keep getting caught and kill everyone, there will be consequences. That's the whole point of the game. You don't want to create chaos by killing guards and wrecking havoc? Be more careful.

Now sure they didn't necessarily handle the choices-and-consequences aspect in the best way, but whining about negative consequences of your murder spree is just lol. I played High Chaos both in the main game and DLC and while I thought Emily turning a bit sociopathic due to my actions was kind of exaggerated, I still embraced the consequences.

Sounds awesome, an expansion and just an overall better game than the first one. I hate it when companies radically change the sequels just give me a game like the first one with improvements. 2 characters is a huge plus for multiple playthroughs.

I bet this becomes like the biggest hard drive hog yet

game seems huge and idtech5

80 gigs confirmed

not kidding

So is it canon Daud is dead? I really liked him and his powers.

Anyways this is shaping up to be even better than the first in many ways.

The first part of the article goes on about how when they were thinking about Dishonored 2, they kept coming back to wanting to make Emily playable and exploring who she would be later in life.

I suspect they were really nervous about how people would react given it sounds like they had a lot of meetings on that topic.

Bethesda still hasn't revealed the final system requirements for Doom and it's a week away, which makes me curious as to how much space the game is going to require. The requirement for the beta was 22GB. I'm beginning to suspect that the pre-load will precede the system requirements announcement. ;)

playing as Emily is brilliant

I thought playing as Clementine in TWD Season 2 was also brilliant (regardless of how much I ended up liking it)

short path to already being familiar with the character. You know about her origins and begginings first-hand. it's a no brainer

Here's a rough recap of the Game Informer article.

  • Visually the game pretty much looks like a more detailed version of the last game.
  • Before anyone asks, there's no co-op, as they weren't sure how to design that in.
[*]The game runs on a modified version of idtech5 they've dubbed The Void Engine.
Oh God. Why? There is UE4 afterall. That shit engine needs to dead.
