I would be psyched for this if they used a single new image. One. New. Image.

But they can't because they have to save as much as possible for the 9+ months of giving every single little asset of the game away before its desperately timed NX launch.

I've never seen the introduction to any Nintendo game botched so hard, much less the game I've most been looking forward to for the past two-three years. Even Federation Force was more competent than this.

The fact that this single loading screen is actually making more hyped than the same old field gifs goes a long way towards explaining why I'll be so pissed if they end up spoiling this whole game before it launches. To wait so long with no news and then have it drained dry just because of their console strategy is so, so, so disheartening.

Nintendo can fuck off with all that "magic is really technology" bullshit if that's where they're heading with the series.

I like the fact that there's technology in the Zelda games. Jukeboxes in OOT, aliens in MM? Good stuff, it adds to the unique flavor of the Zelda universe. But don't call the goddesses ancient aliens and say that what fuels the Triforce and dozens of other series relics isn't magic but highly advanced technology. I can only imagine that the people in this thread who are clamoring for Nintendo to go in this direction are such hard-boiled cynics in real life that they find it difficult to immerse themselves in traditional fantasy. I'm sorry you need an explanation for everything, but some of us still like to suspend our disbelief every now and then and enjoy a world where magic exists and can't be explained away--you know, fantasy.

What's your opinion on robots in Skyward Sword? Magnets and mechanisms in Twilight Princess? Steamboats in Phantom Hourglass? Trains in Spirit Tracks? Neon signs in Ocarina of Time? UFOs in Majora's Mask?

Zelda games always had a dash of "hi-tech."

Yes, always. Throughout the franchise's 30 year history. From the very first game. Remember the laser gun in Zelda II? The jet pack in A Link to the Past? Good times.

Spirit Tracks is an abomination.

Heh, that doesn't really work in reverse.

Heh, it really does when it's fantasy we're talking about.

Magic throughout history is technology and phenomena that people don't understand.

Good thing this is a video game series in which a hero seeks out giant golden talking triangles that can grant wishes and not history.

Well, yeah, that's the whole idea of this trope. Fantasy setting where misunderstood technology is considered magic. If they went full sci-fi it wouldn't be that anymore.

Both sci-fi and fantasy have unbelievable settings and creatures that don't exist in reality, so what do you suppose separates the two genres from each other?

What makes Star Wars fantasy rather than science fiction despite the huge role that advanced technology plays in the franchise?

Magic.

Whether it's labeled ''misunderstood technology" or not, once you posit a scientific explanation for magic, you have, in effect, gone full sci-fi. The presence of swords and dragons and other fantasy tropes does nothing to change that.

Can't magic just be magic? Can't we have amazing, incomprehensible things rather than things we just don't understand yet but know must have some mundane explanation?

If Nintendo explains away magic with technology the way people (mistakenly) thought that George Lucas was explaining away the Force with midichlorians, it will no longer be fantasy but sci-fi with fantasy tropes, and the series I loved will be dead to me.

Speaking of the Twili, their "magic" is very techno-looking, too. With the black squares and glowing circuitry. The robotic wallmasters they made to protect the sols look a lot like Gohdan from Wind Waker:

Zantshand.jpg

The whole Palace of Twilight is very techno.

Magic has almost always been depicted as glowing. What else would you expect from the physical manifestation of a magic spell but for it to glow?

Anyway, that symbol resembles a labyrinth, which, if you didn't know, is more than just a type of maze, but a symbol found in ancient cultures: http://symboldictionary.net/?p=3287

Not every piece of fantasy needs an explanation.

I doubt they'll talk about whatever twist this game has at E3. I think it's very vital to how the game is received and how it plays out.

I have a theory on what it is, but it's just that, a theory.

Is it "night does something weird" or something of that ilk?

What's that symbol from?

Here's my prediction of the game's plot:
takes place between SS and OoT, explains the Sheikah, Twilight Realm, and Majora's Mask, and Link destroys the tech/magic at the end of the game.

I also think they will showcase the NX version in some form.

Nope.

Literally what you see is what you're getting until they officially reveal the NX. Any "surprises" will be announcements about the 30th anniversary or amiibo or something

Whoaaaa

Uhhh

So the book changes your appearance?

Give me more here

I think that...
You're actually playing as Zelda, but instead of transforming into Shiek, you transform in Link. How does this change the gameplay? Well, NPC's would probably treat you differently if you're either PRINCESS OF HYRULE or unknown random boy. You could also probably get some combat changes as well. And I think you'd be Zelda because her Guardian, Impa, is a Shiekah, so she could be trained as one in secret. So that's why she'd have a Shiekah keepsake, as well as that cloak in the first trailer, which looks to be from Twilight Princess.

Story wise...
You'd be in a world where Link/The Hero doesn't exist anymore, so that's why you'd use his image to make people think he's back/give the people hope/etc.

This would also give support to the rumors out there.

This is actually awesome. Don't think Nintendo would have the balls.

And having Link be "Sheik" so to speak
would rock the gaming world. Holy crap.

Well,
it'd serve people who want to play as Link and a female character without disrespecting both parties, while providing a new and interesting twist to the series, while tying it to a bit of unexplored lore.

Why are we
spoiler tagging
speculation about an unknown game?

Because some people would probably not want speculation in their heads as a possibility.

I'm probably wrong, anyway, but they've shown 4 things from this game and there's a lot of speculation to draw from it.

I remember Miyamoto's original vision for the first Legend of Zelda was for you to go between timelines, one overworld being swords and sorcery fantasy and the other being a futuristic world and the Triforce being some type of microchips.

Maybe he's finally getting his wish and pulling the biggest Shyalaman Twist in gaming: This is the game where the Triforce is created via technology.

Well "Zelda" is just the bloodline of the Goddess Hylia, while "Link" is a reincarnated soul (except Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass Link and Spirit Tracks Link)

So I don't see why said "soul of the hero" can't be reincarnated into a gal in the royal bloodline.

No bald cap? Lies!
I hope that their willingness to only show Zelda during E3 and nothing else is a testament to the size and scope of the game. That they feel they can dedicate all their focus on that and not totally spoil the game. Being that it's a true open world this time around one would hope they've managed to put a lot of stuff into the world for us to do.

I'm cool with ancient technology angle, but I pray to the gods that they refrain from trying to fully explain that shit. Mystery is a good thing, keeping things shrouded in uncertainty is a good thing. Once you reveal something it pins you down, limits where you can go next time and can often be pretty underwhelming because it rarely lives up to people's expectations. And especially with a series like this it just makes no sense to try and develop stuff like that when the vast majority of the series has done little to develop a cohesive and well thought background and history for the world.

Hell part of the series charm is the familiarity and uncertainty. It's similar but different every time. Some things fit and make sense, while other things are new and different. Some threads show up in this game and in that game to keep players guessing, but often without explicit connections. Not fully knowing is what makes it fun and interesting, the possibilities that could come from it, without need for an actual payoff.

Link is out there to be on an adventure and save the day, not be some tomb raider looking to reveal the secrets of the past. Having weird technology and bizarre ruins make the world intriguing and engrossing but it's all superficial window dressing when it comes down to it. The main narrative focus, what little there hopefully is, should be on the emotional and thematic sections of the game. The subtle relationships you develop with the NPCs, developing the menace threatening Hyrule and Link's journey and development as a hero.

That would be pretty sweet, though kind of convoluted way to just have us play Zelda. If they're going to do that I'd rather it not be some weird techno nonsense to explain things but good old fashion simple crossdressing. Zelda disguising herself in a Mulan type situation, nothing complicated or complex. Just changing her hairstyle and wearing dude's clothing.

I mean they could use it like a super powered form of Mask from MM and allow us to copy the appearance of numerous people for some kind of quest and gameplay situations, but I just don't see that happening. It's seems too far out there. Also kind of feels shitty that Zelda couldn't just be the hero as herself and not pretending to be some guy. At least with a low tech crossdressing setup she could ditch that early on and it wouldn't be that big a deal, she lets her hair down and alters her outfit a bit, but with some magical high tech book that's not something you can just toss aside like it's nothing.

This better be hands down the best game in the series. This has to be a MINDBLOWING reveal. I also think they will showcase the NX version in some form.

Hopefully all video and assets are NX, only gameplay should only be WiiU, since thats the only hands on stuff

The arc could be "you don't have to pretend to be the hero, you were the hero all along-- no matter your appearance"

Are you implying Star Fox Zero was a complete failure?

You might want to check the thread and read impressions before you outright dismiss it.
He knows this. He's the same guy who was complaining in the other thread about other people liking the new Star Fox.

Gyro is used to make Link walk.

The game renders twice to show Epona's view through the gamepad.
This would be amazing, lol

What I still found incredible is that the 30th anniversary of Zelda is pretty much ruined at this point since the best thing they could have done to celebrate it, wich is by releasing a brand new game, is now a no no. I think Nintendo is simply gonna try to ignore that fact and act like if this was just a random year and not Zelda's 30th anniversary. Because seriously what are they gonna try to say to compensate? "We're gonna celebrate it... by releasing the game till sometime in 2017 please be excited/understand"

Nintendo will be revealing the NX this year, just not at E3. Sure it sucks that all we get is Zelda in June but man, it's basically gonna be two E3's this year.

Honestly, they already celebrated the 25th, so whatever

is it controversial to say that making a big deal out of an "anniversary year" is dumb in the first place? i mean, 30th is totally arbitrary. maybe 10th, or 50th or 100th would make sense. who started this nonsense?

What could be Zelda U's maximum sales potential ? Assuming Nintendo really pushes Zelda into new heights and markets it to death.

Can it possibly sell as much as the blockbuster open worlds out there?
