DF: Tech Analysis: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

What, really? I thought they were supposed to 'fix' this and have a free camera mode and whatnot

According to the video, no. It still looks fairly comprehensive though, and you can drop character models (including Drake) out of the shot, so you'll be able to find a decent work around I'm sure.

It's at least better than the collection, photo mode was restricted about 50% of the time there -- including when aiming.

Glad to hear ND continues to be wizards in console development. I look forward to what will probably be a very interesting GDC talk on their tech next year.

not gonna spoil myself. tempting though

Same. Watched like the first minute of the video and then decided I could wait on seeing any more of this game.

Is a solid 30fps. But there are cycles left in the CPU in a 33ms frame time?.

Well the video mentions one or two minor dips. I think they might be able to patch improve some stuff (like minor shadow complaints), but an unlocked framerate would never be near 60 enough on the PS4. No chance.

Character rendering: This has become a very competitive field. Character rendering in many games including Halo 5, Quantum Break and Rise of the Tomb Raider has been remarkable, but Uncharted 4 pushes things even further.

It's funny how some doubted that. Nice one, DF. Very good analysis.

Great work Dark 10x, fantastic write up, though I won't be watching the video yet. This game really does seem like it is a new standard in visuals.

Raylan: Yeah, and the environments seem to be at least up to par, and more varied and expansive than previous entries.

I'm not touching the video but I'm so excited. Just wish it had TressFX-esque hair rendering, it's still my favourite thing.

Such a nice little effect.

I wonder how much this game cost .
It looks like there are a crazy amount of different assets .

When was the last time DF praised a game this much technically? I really don't remember.

ND smashed all expectations people had from their first PS4 game.

Kinda glad they went with 30fps and all this technical eyecandy than 60 and less of it. If it's got a good motion blur feeling like The Order then 30fps will feel fine and smooth. Hopefully it can hit 60fps with no compromise on the Neo.

Fuck me, I thought it was gonna be a good one... That's definitely disappointing to hear.

Sounds like they nailed it. Not surprising coming from ND.

I will say I AM disappointed with the 30fps decision. I would have prefered a 900p60fps compromise like they made for the MP. Resolution is important for sure, I hardly ever play my consoles as I'm primarily a PC gamer and have a 1440p144hz monitor and I would still choose to have 900p60fps over 1080p30. I'm guessing(as I have not watched anything other than the e3 preview from last year) that the 1080@30 is to give them some overhead to maintain a solid framerate. Which keeps in line with previous games on their launch systems, but I still would have prefered 60fps. Gonna definitely be picking this up though after I move, sounds like it's a great great game.

Incredible what they can get out of limited hardware.
It would be fascinating to see what they could pull off on PC but I guess this isn't happening anytime soon.

The Order is the smoothest 30fps I've ever seen on my life. If all games had motion blur that good, no one would complain.

Another great video. 12 more hours till i will be playing.
Sucks about the photo mode not giving you the freedom of the order.

And still waiting for a MP analysis video. I might try some MP tomorrow night. Loved the BETAS.

Their thing is kind of pulling this stuff out of closed hardware though. Not saying their animation and art wouldn't transfer or anything but part of the Naughty Dog "experience" is that they manage to pull much more out of the hardware when compared to other devs.

ICE team really knows how to get the most of PS4 architecture. I'd love to watch the video but judging by some posts it seems like there are some spoilers. Soon guys.

Not going to lie, but as I played through it was often too beautiful,

Photo mode became a nasty addiction that I had to fight whilst playing through.

I've left mine off because I already took 30 photos in first 4 chapters.

ill save that for later, I often do nothing with them anyway lol

tressfx is shit. doesnt feel natural at all

No, it looks great and very natural in ROTTR and it looked great in 2013 after the fix on PC.

Just because someone posted gif of it from day 1 when it was broken, doesn't mean that it's shit.

Agreed, I think I'm going to have to force myself to leave photomode till my second playthrough. At this rate the constant stopping and fapping at the graphics is ruining the pace of the game as well as turning me blind.

Naughty Gods really know what they are doing.

Best studio in the business, its like they can't release a game under 90 anymore lol.

Wow, I didn't expect the loading as a negative. I suppose it makes sense with their reasoning. When I played it, it was the more typical play through in which the initial loading was fairly quick and then not a loading screen in sight, which was quite impressive.

Doesn't it work like TLOU? In which case, how the HELL can that be a negative?
