DF: Tech Analysis: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

you know what, I think I may remember something like that in C3. For sure it does it with smoke a haze tho. Never played Ryse so don't know what it has.
Presuming the option is enabled in Ryse (r_FogShadowsWater) then it would have it if the water were cloudy enough.
Hey, man, is shadow dithering still present to you? I can't seem to notice it in this video and I even played the game in person at a showcase today. Shadows definitely have some jagged edges, but dithering seems gone to me.
I honestly need to spend waaaaaaay more time looking into the game today when I have the time. Watch some vids I DL'd and pay more attention to the DF analysis. In a pre-release video, the overworld shadows at normal camera distance had very little too any dithering, but cutscene shadows still showed it since the camera was close enough.

If you have any great screens to point me too show casing shadows close up and at verying distances (cutscene and otherwise), post 'em!

One thing I have always been curious about, and I am pretty sure it is possible, is using TAA for screenspace dithering on Shadow Maps. I am pretty sure that new game from the (Limbo?) devs does it.
Has anybody noticed on the beginning of the game how nate and sam character skin looks granulated, this may sound weird but it looks like the dithering in the shadows but this time on the skin, this only happens on cutscenes at the beginning of the game

Screens?

Sorry, I don't own the game yet, probably picking it up tomorrow and I can only play it this weekend. Perhaps Roboplato already got his copy? Anyway, nice to know that I'm not blind. Shadow dithering certainly seems removed in gameplay, but I'm not sure about cutscenes. I didn't see many shadows in the cutscenes when I was at the showcase. Also, NXGamer theorizes that shadows are using some form of temporal reprojection to increase the quality over time. Perhaps you should watch his video.

I am completely blown away, playing through the beginning and thankful to be alive to see this kind of progress.

The new one looks so much better.
But regardless it's still better than clay hair.

sadly clay hair is the exact hair every other character in tomb raider has. i'd rather tresFX not be used at all on lara if it means everyone else looks like last gen garbage next to her lol

Seriously people who don't have the PlayStation just find a way to play it. A true sight to behold. Just insanity
I'm pausing every two minutes to look at the game. A league of its own. Its not just about textures or polycount. Its everything. Wow

I don't like 30fps at all as I'm used to 60fps in every game but I got my copy today and it feels much better than your average 30fps game, much like The Order 1886 did. I'm not sure what wizardry they did with the engine but it doesn't have that usual 30fps "slow motion" feel to it. I'm guessing it goes beyond just a stable 30. A million miles better than how TLoU felt when capped at 30.

Going from the collection this morning to this one doesn't bother me. Frame rate is to notch

Yup, played it at a showcase today and it certainly feels smoother than most 30FPS games. To be fair, though, I wasn't playing shooting sequences but climbing and puzzle solving sequences. Can't wait to play it this weekend!

It's just stable. They did it with Uncharted 2 as well. TLOU was definitely struggling more often to keep up 30fps.

30 fps can feel smooth.

Shit. I guess I have to order The Nathan Drake collection and marathon through it this week so I can play this. Looks insane.

I meant the remaster using the 30fps cap which to me felt horrible, I lasted a minute before switching it back to 60fps. But Uncharted 4 actually feels really good, it's a nice surprise honestly, I was expecting it to be a much bigger issue for me as it usually is.

I recently went back to Uncharted 2 on the PS3 a few weeks ago and you can definitely feel frame rate drops in a few areas, mostly action packed ones. It is a solid 30FPS 95% of the time, but at those rare moments, I think it drops to mid twenties. I guess this gen of rock solid 30FPS in most games spoiled me. :p

Uncharted 1, on the other hand, let's just say I was shocked at how poorly it ran.

Solid 30 fps along with great motion blur can make a game feel very smooth. Unstable sub-30 fps, or 30 fps with no motion blur, feels pretty choppy. Just look at DkS3, that game doesn't feel smooth at all.

I guess this is how you soothe disquiet about Neo...release something that pushes the bar up again and makes the current box attractive even in the face of those reports. As a non-PS4 owner, this is making the option to wait for Neo less attractive :(

Otoh, it also makes the case for the Neo being just enough to push it over the cliff of uncanny valley. The shadows being a regular weakness for instance, if nothing else changed but that + more AF, the Neo version would break your immersion far less already.

I wish I felt like that, but to me it looked very choppy yesterday. Normally I don't mind 30 fps games, but I played a lot of Tearaway Unfolded (and various PC games) lately, so my mind must have trouble adjusting to 30 fps again.

Definitely looks top notch (I just picked up the game), but it's not perfect. For what ND does do though is really amazing. The only other game that gave me this kind of impression was The Order:1886. Both games seem to share similar tech. Materials are some of the best. Shadows, hair, water -- not so much.

After playing more firefights are definitely dropping it under 30, it's not bad but it's noticeable. Explosions seem to consistently bring it under 30 for example, and it doesn't seem to like enemies with flash lights either. Still very good on the whole though.

PS4 Neo my ass... I cant believe the graphics and the IQ i am witnessing. This is the best looking game i have seen by far...

I feel like materials here lag behind 1886. Some surfaces look nice, others not so much imo.

The graphics in this game are mind blowing. Playing through now and I can't believe what I'm seeing! There are a few ugly parts that stand out like a sore thumb though (some of the water and smoke effects especially). But overall, I have to agree with many others here that this is the best looking game I have ever seen!

Yes, i noticed it too. The effect stood out in the otherwise outstanding graphics.

Waiting for my copy to get here but based on what I have seen I would have to agree.

It's a little funny though because it's not actually ND being weak in that regard, it's just that The Order is so far ahead of virtually every other game there that it's ridiculous.

That probably has to do with the scale of the game, the order feels so incredibly small next to uncharted

It's the motion blur. I'm not entirely sure what's happening with The Last of Us: Remastered, but it's worse than your typical stable 30 with motion blur. I'm guessing they toned it down since the game was mostly running at 60 and kept that toned down blur for the 30 FPS option.

i mean maybe its just me but i dont see how anyone could mistake those for an actual photo

I think KC have a better aproach to that than Battlefront.

Im enjoying U4 a lot, but for me the wow factor on grapichs for the ps4 still is on The Order basket.

Been playing for a bit now, and it regularly looks absolutely AMAZING. Like, bordering on photorealistic under the right lighting conditions. At other times it "just" looks great. Bit of a shame about the shadow dithering on character faces in some cutscenes, but nothing is perfect I guess. Also some very slight (single frame?) hitching when the camera switches angles, and I've noticed a few slight framedrops during gameplay (most noticeably right at the start of the early
young Drake
sequence), but nothing to really speak of. Most of the time it's exceptionally stable, and it overall looks absolutely excellent.

Finally started playing it, and I'll be go to hell. This looks absolutely fantastic.
I'm early in the game (chapter 6), but beyond the technical prowess, I feel there's a lot to be said about the art and the care they took with a million details.

Funnily enough, a location similar to that of chapter 6 featured recently in another game, and both treat it with the love it deserves
it looks a lot like the Amalfi Coast, which is a genuinely beautiful place in real life and was Hitman's latest chapter. Hitman obviously focused more on the urban side of it, but both capture the charm of the place.

I love that these games, like Halo and Witcher did too, are really pushing the envelope when it comes to character models.

Honestly, if PS4K enhances this, I'll be selling my PS4 and getting one, even if I could give two shits about 4K.

Picked up my copy yesterday and played up to the start of Chapter 5. These are the most impressive visuals I've seen in all my 32 years; just unbelievable.

Jeez even screenshots in photo mode don't do the game justice. To see Nate reacting to the snow while flakes are flying everywhere and the wind blowing the trees. I've played battlefront on a beefy computer but it's far ahead for me. Battlefront looks lifeless in comparison. May win a screen battle (even that is debatable ) but in motion ... Uncharted hands on for me

i noticed the same too, looked like a mesh on nates face. the same effects when foliage is too close to the screen

I'm up to chapter 18 and dithering in the shadows both in gameplay and in cutscenes is still present, sadly.

In the caves in
Scotland
, where your flashlight comes on, the dithering was VERY noticeable to me. It really drags down what's otherwise excellent IQ. Maybe on PS4K we'll get this game in all its glory, without any major flaws like that.

Don't get me wrong, the game generally looks spectacular, but that compromise does stand out.
