Pokémon Sun and Moon Starters Revealed. Releases November 18th 2016.

Making changes to the actual models (or any assets for that matter) at a point where you actually know for sure is an impossibly big of task to be done (reducing polycounts, re-authoring etc. is probably probably closer to hundreds of thousands of working hours at this scale). They either made a conscious decision to go for better models over framerate, or that their scope was a bit too out of reach and pre-production wasn't enough to determine accurate specs for models.

I think I counted, ignoring forms that are just recolours like Deerling and shinies, that there's something 850 models (although some are pretty minor) when you account for form(e)s, Megas, and gender differences. Although, some of the more simple models could probably be fine as is, you're probably right about reducing the model counts being too great a time commitment for whatever benefits they gain in framerate, especially weighed against the benefit of being able to re-use those models in future generations.

That said, there are probably other optimizations in their rendering pipeline or engine they can do that could help.

Apparently Pokenchi showed a new trailer

New HP bar and bystanders are shown in battle.

Oh wow. I love the new HP bar, it's pretty fancy looking. All curvy, reminds me of Battle Revolulution when dealing damage as has been pointed out. And bystanders? Are they gonna kill off doubles now? Triples? If not RIP framerate.

Seriously though, I'm sure they'll limit bystanders to special fights. So imagine if we get bystanders during the E4 and champion fights though. That would be hype if they could give us enough of them. Which they probably couldn't, but still.

The trainers probably won't be there in doubles. They're not getting rid of doubles, since it's the core way the game is balanced now.

Triples and Rotation battles are gimmicky filler modes, they could drop those for all I care.

I know, I know, I wasn't being serious there. Well, I am about the framerate. I see no reason not to be concerned about that.

I like Rotations. Gimmicky for sure but it adds a fun layer of prediction IMO. That and Triples are so woefully underutilized though, so I agree. Where they're at right now they might as well cut them.

I never really play Triples or Rotation seriously, but I appreciate that the options are there and I'd be sad if they removed them.

I wonder if, with the trainers now appearing in battle, the Pokémon are true to scale again like in all the non Gamefreak 3D Pokémon games. Them not being true to scale bothered me greatly in X/Y. I loved to summon huge beasts in PBR and have them fight each other. Hopefully SuMo brings that back. Give me my triple Wailord v. Wailord battle GF.

I hopes so too. ORAS even has the correct scales for the models programmed into the game.

They might not want to do so while the screen size is still small though, imagine trying to find a joltik among 5 wailord on a 3DS screen...

Dream bigger. WAILORD HORDE

GF should just add more optional Inverse battles in single player and make them a playable mode in multiplayer, instead of limiting them to certain tournaments.

The only battles that I think that will be removed are Sky Battles (what was the point of these?). About as wasted as thing was.

There is part of me that is really considering importing a US 2DS so I can play the games on the international release date instead of the EU one but deep down I know it's a bad idea and that I want my first adventure to be on a cartridge.

That seems like a huge waste of money. Don't do it, brah.

Not a good idea. Waiting a week is worth the however much a 2DS costs now + shipping.

Yeah, you're both right. Those 5 days are going to be hell online but they're not worth £100 or whatever it'll be. Would have been nice to play through a Pokemon game without it being spoiled for once but I imagine the game will leak before the 18th anyway so oh well.

What's this referring to exactly? Is it a pokedex feature?

Think of it this way, at least you can see the final evos for the starters so you can make an informed decision.

Well, I've picked Fire in every single generation so I don't think I can break tradition now anyway ;) I'll play through the games with all starters eventually tbf

How is Triple and Rotation any more gimmicky than Doubles? They're essentially similar in terms of being new ways to battle. Makes no sense to cut them out just because they're "gimmicky."

It has so much potential too considering they could have built a gym around the styles, which hasn't been done since Tate and Liza having Double Battles in RSE.

Remember how traumatized people were after Fennekin's evolutions? Lol.

Always wait master race.
I never spoil new pokemon for myself outside of the staters and their evolutions for this reason. :p My cute Torchic evolving to Combusken seriously disappointed kid-me.

Restarted and joined Mudkip master race.

So that guy's not your "true" rival, but the one who picks the Pokemon that's weak to yours

I hope this doesn't mean that your true rival is the opposite gender...how lame would that be. Give us back something as good as BW/2 !

Going on blackout from now on, I have true hope in this game. They need to deliver. Please 100+ new Pokémon and less Mega bullshit in the campaign.

I almost decided not to pick Chespin because of Quilladin, and then I saw the final evolution and stuck with him because of how badass it looked. I learned a very valuable lesson: Always wait to see what the end result is before picking.

Yeah like Rotation Battles in particular is such a fascinating format to me. I love how it's kind of like a fusion of Single Battles and Triple Battles, having aspects of both while also having things that are unique to it as well. Like, you can only actually attack with one Pokemon each turn but both you and your opponent have three to choose from each turn meaning you both have 12 potential moves to work with on any given turn which can lead to some of the most intense mind-games of any format, being limited to one-move each while having so many options available. I mean, sure, in Triples you both also have three Pokemon on the field, but you're actively attacking with each of them so the mind-games and predictions aren't anywhere near as intense.

Plus, in Rotations, you can do stuff like setting-up with one Pokemon and then Rotating to another and using it instead without losing the stat-boosts on Pokemon #1, something you can't do without specifically using Baton Pass in other formats, opening up options and strategies unique to it. That can lead to all kinds of crazy situations and make it more important to keep track of what's going on with each and every Pokemon on the field (which usually isn't too much of a problem in Doubles or Triples because things usually die too fast in those formats for that to be much of a worry whereas Rotations having a pace more similar to Singles makes it slightly more pressing).

So yeah, I definitely agree with this and if wish the games did a better job showing the potential of other formats like that because it just seems like there's so much there to me and whether it would work out or not I'd just be very curious to see what would happen if they tried to mix things up a bit more and not just let these other styles go to waste and be such a rare thing.

Now, Sky Battles on the other hand... Those can definitely go and wouldn't be missed.

I wonder what the third cover legendary could be? Sun, Moon and...Eclipse? If they even bother having a third legend this time after what happened with Zygarde.

I actually kinda doubt we're going to get a third version (or S2/M2) considering the NX is releasing next year. Or maybe the 3rd version will be NX exclusive? I could even see us getting Diamond & Pearl remakes as the first games for the NX handheld so there's more of a gap between batches of new Pokemon.

My bet is on Mars. I can see them doing a S2/M2 version, but only because there could be an "eclipse" form and that works so well. That's the only thing I'm going on.

Even though they're not planets or stars, I'm thinking the third version will be comet related.

Apparently the secondary types of Litten's and Popplio's evolved forms might've gotten leaked.

https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/4jg3vd/smo_major_spoilers_litten_and_popplios_final_evo/

They're
Ground
and
Fighting
respectively.

Water/fighting for Popplio evos confirmed...knew it. Welp, that solidifies me with Rowlett.

edit: but then again, Rin Lila in the comments posted
Hey actually you're wrong.

Rowlet is going to be grass ground. Litten pure fire and Popplio water fighting.

Why ? because the primary type always comes first. Ground (03) comes BEFORE fire (04). And fighting (06)comes AFTER water (05).

Also : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burrowing_owl
Not sure why they'd keep pure Fire for Litten all the way through though

Fire/Ground is pretty interesting. Someone from the source pointed out that Rowlet could be the one that has the ground type, making him grass/ground, Popplio Water/Fighting, and Litten pure fire.

So water/fighting, grass/flying, and fire/ground.

It's not the perfect two triangles we got with X and Y. Fighting isn't super effective against ground. I wish Litten was fire/dark or fire/poison but eh.. beggars can't be chosers.

I'm curious on their hidden abilities.

The problem with super good graphics and animations in Pokemon is that, after the first impression, all it really does it to make the battles slow and tedious.

I dunno. In Gen 6 they went with double rock/paper/scissors. Grass/Fighting, Water/Dark, Fire Psychic. Grass > Water and Fighting > Dark, Water > Fire and Dark > Psychic, and Fire > Grass and Psychic > Fighting.

If Gen VII was Grass/Flying, Water/Fighting, and Fire/Ground this would put Litten at a disadvantage compared to the other 2 as ground would not give it a type advantage over flying. Fire/Rock would properly complete the double rock/paper/scissors. With Fire/Ground, Litten would be the only starter with a 4x disadvantage to a STAB type of another starter. but with Fire/Rock Litten would have a 4x STAB advantage over Rowlet. Water and Fighting share no type disadvantages, so that typing would make Popplio the most defensive.
