Every GTX 1080 at launch will *only* be Founder's Edition.

Was just checking to see if EVGA put up the 1080 yet. Then I saw that they are only selling the Founder's Edition.

So I checked the other manufacturer's websites and they are only selling the Founder's Edition as well.

So if you were looking to buy a GTX 1080 at launch, be prepared to spend an extra $100. I don't know what this means for yields but I would anticipate stock being pretty low. One way to curb people from buying something just to resell later on is to do one of these tactics.

I can see why they are doing it, but it seems like a shitty thing to do to the people who are your best customers.

As a side note, to anyone that was looking at buying at GTX 1070 at launch, be prepared for these same shenanigans.

This is just NVIDIA getting a slice of the scarcity pie they created.

1. Launch several products at a shortage
2. Watch as people resell said product at a premium
3. Competitor becomes complacent and not very relevant in the market
3. Knowingly design the product launch to cause shortage position.
4. Manufactured shortage situation now becomes profitable for NVIDIA

I blame AMD.
This is the behavior of a company when there is no viable competition.

Yes I believe this was known. This is that early access edition in reality. Same everything with reference cooler design(as if that's a selling point lmao).

Just wait a bit longer for third party custome PCB/cooler designs if you serious about buying a 1080.

Yh although reference cards do make sense in some builds so it depends on the use case and am guessing prices are not going to come down on founder edition designs after a while so that premium will likely always be there.

He was talking about their cards, not then coolers. The third party cards will be cheaper, including premium ones that come with a factory overclock and different/better cooling.

Try months. Why would the aibs sell a better cooler for less than the reference card when they will sell out their stock at $699. The aib reference cards will also be $699. Expect $750+ for the best aftermarket pcbs and coolers for the foreseeable futire. You will see cheap crappy blower coolers for less than $699, but nothing else for at least 1-2 months, is my prediction.

Lol, the "premium" ones like the msi lightning, evga classified, and gigabyte xtreme, and hydro cooled models will definitely be more expensive than $699. The standard 2 and 3 fan variants will likely be $699 or slightly more if the aibs themselves are selling the founders edition (reference) for $699 (they are). Nvidia is being dubious at best with this nonsense.

At least if there are only founder's editions for sale at launch I won't feel compelled to buy one before AMD shows off their new cards. It's obviously better to wait to see what the competition can offer before buying a new card, but I've been itching to upgrade and the price/performance on these Nvidia cards are such that I was considering jumping on them right away before they sell out for God knows how long.

Im itching to give them my money as well but Im going to wait for the factory overclocked 1080s. Im building a new rig and I cant order broadwell E for a few weeks anyways.

As for timing. Havent the rumors pointed to June for 3rd pary cards with non reference coolers?

Well whatever, zero regular 1080s being available at launch just makes it easier to justify the purchase a month later, more $$$ saved up for the card :)

I can't even be mad at this. If people are going to pay for it and I'm not then they will get the cards. These cards will still sell out for a month at least. We won't see the cheaper cards for awhile and when we do they will scarce as fuck. I really hope AMD shows up in the least. At this point I would take a Polaris at 390X/980 power for $300 or less. $250 would be automatic.

Agreed.

I think what will make be buy a 1080 is seeing how good the OC results are. The difference between a 980ti OC'd vs a stock 1080 might be negligible. Also 980ti's are going for $425~ on eBay.

Value wise, a used 980ti might be the better buy at this moment and can hold me off until HBM2.

But if the 1080 OC results are insane, then I don't know what I'm going to do. If the rumor is true that AMD pushed Vega10 to Oct, then I think I'll just wait for Oct.

This sucks. I've posted about this before but I'm returning my 970 so I can just get the 1070 which I'm guessing is going to be a good improvement for VR. If I didn't have a Vive I probably wouldn't care so much as it handles pretty much everything I throw at it. It's not going to be fun having to wait. Not that the 80 bucks extra is the end of the world but I'd rather have a better cooler with a little bit higher clock rate.

They are charging $100 more as an early adopter fee. There is no difference between a Founder's Edition and a "regular" 1080.

Other than being $100 more.

I'm curious what the premium custom designs will come in at. A bit worried they will price above the Founder's Edition if this thing sells well...

I thought someone said in another thread the Founders editions previously are the better "binned" cards, more likely to withstand higher overclocks. I guess that's not the case if they are reference designs though.

Tough thing is that normally it's

- a cooling system/fan
- factory OC'd
- not $100 more than base/reference

This is Nvidia hammering the early adopters because they know they will pay and also because AMD is not doing anything competitive right now and they also know that.
