UC4 Director Says They Had To Ask One 'Sexist Focus Tester' To Leave [Spoilers]

I actually find it weird that there are approximately ZERO female mercenaries in the campaign besides Nadine. They don't have that excuse that they had with PS3 where there's too little memory so I found it to be a bit of a missed opportunity there.
Yeah, it seems only Ubisoft is doing generic baddies be women as well.

I can kinda get some people not being happy that nathan, who's quite proficient in meleeing dudes in all 4 games (at least how I play) gets his ass handed to him by nadine every encounter.

The epilogue thing though? Dude must have some history or something that got him enraged about that...

Nate fighting Nadine was like Bucky trying to fight Black Panther in Civil War. Dude got his salad tossed because he was clearly outclassed. Nate is a brawler, Nadine actually knows how to properly kick ass. He was never going to win.

"not you too" what does that even mean?

What a moron.

Blizzard, Ubisoft and um....ohmygodlikeeveryoneelseduh have fallen to the feminazis. Gaming used to be a safe haven but now everyone is obsessed with PC culture and women in videogames. Just look at all the recent major releases that only star female leads like:

1) Tomb Raider

Nadine was awesome and I don't understand why anyone would be mad that she can beat up Nate. They make it painfully clear from the very first appearance that Nadine outclasses Nate and Sam in terms of physical ability.

She doesn't really look the part though. I'd expect a character that can overpower two guys at once to be big and brawny. It's also off in comparison with the gameplay as Nate can melee kill hundreds of trained mercenaries with ease and here you have a QTE where your actions are meaningless as Nate constantly gets beat up anyway.

I guess the other thing too is what videogame female lead isn't either also (a) sexualized or (b) falls into basically being the tough Ice Queen type like Lightning?

I thought the game made it pretty clear Nadine wasn't just your average merc.
She's the damn commander of a PMC. Yeah, ol' Nate is probably not going to be able to brute force his way to victory.

Nadine beating up Nate handily was the most this series has ever made sense. It's basically the same thing as what would have happened if Lazarevic ever bothered to get his hands dirty, Nate can't compete with military training.
Seriously. Right from the first brawl in Chapter
02
, it's obvious that he would get his ass kicked by anyone with a bit of training and skill.

Eh she doesn't have to look the part at all. She's mercenary with extensive training. I mean look at Sam, Nate and even Elena. They look like your average person yet they constantly do things beyond what you'd think they can do.

What does that even mean "she doesn't really look the part though"?

It's this very line of thinking that has folks looking at the industry sideways.

Who says a woman has to be "big and brawny" to kick ass? Throughout all mediums we have examples of strong women of all sizes kicking ass...Ellen Ripley, Lara Croft, Barbara Gordon just to mention 3 different characters that span across different mediums.

Exactly. There are many people out that, one would underestimate (not looking a 'part'), that would get you pushing daisy's in mere seconds.

And remember, speed kills. They even comment to her on how fast she is.

And for the record, she looked the part just fine to me. Her build and speed echoed she was not to be messed with.

The epilogue was garbage and it had nothing to do with the gender of the kid.

No, it happened to do with your own perception.

Speaking of outrage, this reminded me.....

Remember when people where up in arms that Laura Bailey was voicing Nadine? But then Druckmann said some reasonable stuff and that they even have a black person voicing a white character. Did that ever turn out to be true in the end? A quick look at the imdb doesnt seem so.

Merle Dandridge plays
the old woman
in chapter
16
(So yeah, it's true)

She also plays the
nun at the start of the game.

Let's try out its meme potential:

I'm confused, how else can she look the part besides making her...bigger? (or "more manly" :p )
Being an actual trained fighter is VERY important than just size/strength.

I mean, its not Nathan's been just fighting street thugs through out the series, been duking it out with military type dudes every game, including 4.

I'm pretty surprised they didn't add on to the melee system over the years besides just spamming [] and triangle at times, kinda like how the arkham games added martial artists and ninjas.

Just seemed a bit out of left field, and its not because of nadine's gender. My memory is hazy, has anyone else kicked nathan's ass in a cutscene in the series?

Contrary to popular propaganda spread by Zangief, you do not in fact need to be "big muscle" to take down men. You just need muscle spirit. That and the knowledge & proper training of how to actually fight which Nadine got.

Look at Bruce Lee. That scrawny ass dude could probably take down men 3 times his size with relative ease.

I have no idea why you guys didn't read the Spoilers warning in the thread title and in the OP. Nevertheless, I have tagged almost every stuff that could be considered a spoiler.

You edited it now - thx. Spoiler warning in the title is not so helpful when the OT contains spoiler tags and the biggest spoiler is not in spoiler tags. Because this indicates that you can read it, especially this topic is not so much about the story conclusion but covers more a political industry topic.

Heh, perhaps I'm looking at it from a gameplay standpoint too much, where the huge brute enemies are the only ones Nate can't simply punch to death.

The clever trick Naughty Dog does with Nate is make his every action besides shooting look somewhat unconvincing and sloppy. When he's climbing or throwing punches or jumping, there's zero grace - it always looks like a lucky break. This makes it so that, in-game, you can bare-knuckle brawl with mercs, but in cutscenes Nate can be wrecked by Nadine or have cliffs break apart under his fingertips, and it all feels correct and believable.

Nate is the everyman in that respect and it's something that Naughty Dog has down to a tee. Kudos to ND for that.

Yeah, I was gonna say, I actually think Nadine fits the part just fine. She's very toned and it's clear she has a military background. I don't think she needs to be huge to realistically overpower Nate. And it's pretty clear that Nadine is on another level than the other Shoreline mercs. The game establishes her as a real threat right off the bat.

Yup, it's a great touch. It really gives you the impression Nate is just bullshitting his way through everything, but to great success haha.

The actress who played Marlene in TLOU was the old woman in this game.

You can see her in action here.

I think putting Nate's daughter at the end worked well to throw people off into thinking it could be a teenage Elena. I'm sure plenty of people thought of it at first.

Yeah I have no idea what OmegaXO is on about. Look at dem muscles and veins. I love that she takes off her shoes to go proper martial arts on his ass.

I really don't understand why those 2 scenes matters

As for nadine , she fits perfectly into the world and uncharted already established that there was multiple women that could kick-ass AND be more powerfull than the cast.
Elena, chloe, heck even Katherine Marlowe while old was still a strong figure. Why did this matter ?

As for cassie, why again ? I'm certainly set for a girl looking for treasure when she get older..there is no reason to just ignore or reject the new character especially since it's implied that she got the same sense of discovery than his father.

Poor deluded focus tester. i'm glad they kept the character as is

What a child. I love Naughty Dog's push for women in their games. Didn't they have trouble getting Ellie on the front cover of TLOU?

It's just the epilogue and it was cute.

Having twins (a daughter and a son) would have solved the problem.

But it's not a "problem".

In a game with three main characters who are male (Nate, Sam, Sully), one main character who's female (Elena), and two side characters who are each male and female (Rafe and Nadine), and the two female characters never interact, it's not a "problem" to add one new female character.

And it's pretty silly to suggest that to solve the "problem" of adding a female character in the epilogue, the "solution" would be to introduce yet another new male character too.

It's like the gaming version of "but men get it too" when women talk about harassment - men who always feel like they must be the center of attention and get anxious whenever women start taking even the slightest bit of focus.

I know that isn't how he meant it but the initial answer makes it actually sound like he's against male characters for some weird reason.

Naw I grinned like a mad man when I saw Cassie, immediately I felt that it was their kid, I yelled "yes, happy ending" soon as I saw her.

side note: when I saw Man of Steel in theatres that part when Clark snaps Zod's neck, some dude stood up and literally yelled "yes, yes he's lost his innocence"

The best part of that scene is that she takes her shoes off before laying into Nate. Like "Ohhhh, she's barefoot, shit is going down"

Hey, she could still be bigger. :)

Someone mentioned Zangief already, a huge bulky person like that is what I would see taking out Nate and Sam at the same time with ease. Stereotypical maybe, but it would definitely fit in the pulpy Uncharted universe.

I actually liked they had a
daughter.
Seemed like a good fit.

I had no problem with the fact that Nadine beat up Drake, but i really disliked how they handcuffed you during those scenes. You move really slowly, punch really slowly, and cant roll or do anything to evade. I felt they should have just made them cut scenes because it clearly felt like the game wouldn't let you do anything that could lead to actually beating her.

This tester is an idiot. I don't understand why people are so insecure that they can't play as a female character in a game. Must not have played too many MMOs lol.

They don't necessarily have to have
Cassie
be the protag if there is another Uncharted game.
If you looked at some of the scenery at the end there were plenty of untold tales on display around the house featuring Nate and Elena.
