Man, what modern shooters do you play where Overwatch is slow?

I swear CSGO with the knife out feels faster, and obviously this game doesnt compare to Quake Live or Unreal Tournament

the new Doom is much faster but obviously its multiplayer is a joke

I havent played the new Call of Duty games but those look faster too. Which shooter is slower?

Danny is buying 50 loot boxes for Overwatch

oh my god

...I brought 20 myself.

I was on the verge of getting 5 boxes but then I got these back to back from leveling up.

I'm never ever gonna think of buying anything again.

Yes, it feels slow as molasses after playing Doom.

Something about the micro transactions in Overwatch weird me out. I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because the pace of getting crates in the beta seemed pretty slow and I'm not sure how you actually earned them outside of level ups. I don't typically get ouchy about micro transactions in full priced games, but definitely something here that bugs me a tad bit. Since all the extra heroes and maps are free, I guess it evens out. Maybe it's just my internal wish that that game was F2P, because I kind of want to check it out more, but I know I won't personally get $40 worth out of it. Splatoon's release format is still the ideal, but not everyone is Nintendo.

Anyway, screw Overwatch. Witcher 3: Blood and Wine next week! Get hyped!

Yeah looks like you only get them through leveling. There is some other currency that unlocks in crates that you can use to buy skins, but I think i have 200, and some of the skins are 10,000. I wish you could just buy skins outright. I'm not going to pay what was is essentially a lottery ticket.

Pretty sure the most expensive skins (Legendary) are 1,000. Which ones are you seeing that are 10k?

The Loot boxes are a neat idea but the scary thing is how easily they can tweak the rate at which you get specific items. It would be nice to be able to 'disenchant' skins and boil them down into the currency since getting a legendary skin for a character you rarely play is pretty frustrating.

Yeah you may be right. I only looked at it briefly last night. My bad!

No Wednesday morning cast? Worst drive to work on a Wednesday since before I started listening to the Bombcast at said time ever.

I think I'm lucky in that I'm missing whatever sick gene people have that makes them buy skins for games. I like the general designs so I don't really feel the need to change them.

I think it's the thing that saved me when it comes to atlus games. Except for one case in p4d.

That's where I'm at. I'll buy a nice skin in a F2P game that I want to support, but other than that, they don't grab me. I certainly don't roll through random chests for them. In a game that's not F2P, I don't think I've ever felt the compulsion to spend money on a skin.

Mobile Gachas, though, are a goddamn kryptonite to me. Luckily I've pretty much got that under control now. I was never a really big whale/Brad DOTA Hats money, but I spent a bit more than I'd like to admit.

All the weird micro transactions in mobile games drives me away more often than not, and it's not even in a "I need to stay away or I'll be consumed" kind of way. Just genuinely repulsive to me.

Like everything, it depends on the implementation. Japanese gacha games have gotten better over time at balancing things for free/low purchasing players. If you play PAD or Terra Battle, the only things that really get locked to whales are the most high end of high end content and competitive multiplayer. Even most of those have clever and cheap ways to get around. The key is balancing your free economy well. Whales will whale because they can, not because they have to.

Now, we can talk about the predatory nature of some of these games (and some are very, very bad about it. Particularly SE's stuff). I think there should be better restrictions on how much people can spend at a time and such and rates should be less obscure. I think the model in and of itself can be used to allow great games to hit a massive market of people, though, so it isn't necessarily evil on its face.

I like the skins in Uncharted 4 multiplayer (not enough to pay money for them though) and those are skins you can actually see on yourself because it's a TPS. That's why I didn't care one bit about the loot in the Overwatch Beta.

Nah, it's not even the balance really, I just don't really like the feeling of having to be in an ongoing monetary relationship with a game, especially when they cap your ability to play them through meters. Even the ones with probably good balancing for the free players too.

Also they just don't have a lot of the genres I'm interested in. No interest in TCGs at all.

Do we know if you can get repeat loot drops in Overwatch or is it always something new?

I can see it getting dirty when people want that orange skin but just can't get it.

I totally get it.

I've found that most games now are so quick with regenerating energy and so generous with free currency and refills that you can grind practically infinitely as a free player. Higher tier stuff tends to be more expensive, but a lot of that is just bragging rights clears that you only need to do once.

It helps that I've found a couple games I've really latched onto. Everyone knows I love PAD and it's one of my favorite games ever made, but stuff like Terra Battle also works real well for me. I've only ever put money into 1 of more 2 PAD accounts and never into any other game. I don't think I've ever felt held back by being a free player in any of the modern gatcha games I've played, but that's just my feeling.

Repete drops give you that currency to spend on more boxes or skins and stuff. The amounts did not seem very generous from what I've played, but I probably didn't get dupes of rare items.

you can. It gets automatically cashed in as currency when it drops. So far I've only seen the whites and blues get duped and those go for 5 and 15 a pop

I want Blizzard to drop some SYNERGY and introduce Hearthstone packs as loot. Or a unified currency between Hearthstone and Overwatch or something like that.

That's the worst part about it. Why do I care about designer loot when I can't even see it 90% of the time.

A unified currency in a F2P style economy sounds like it'd be an absolute bitch to balance between 2 separate game genres.

'Look at me, I got this sick drop' bragging rights are huge in MP games. Just look at the way TF2 hats are treated.
