Microsoft is preparing at least two new Xbox models for release in the next two years, sources tell Kotaku. Later this year we’ll see a cheaper, smaller Xbox One, and next year Microsoft will release a more powerful version of their premiere console.

The 2017 Xbox, which is codenamed Scorpio, will have a more powerful GPU, according to three people familiar with this model, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to speak about Microsoft’s plans. We hear that it will also be technically capable of supporting the Oculus Rift and that Microsoft is pursuing a partnership with Oculus. As for 2016, sources have told us there’s at least a more compact version coming by year’s end. One source believed it will include a larger 2TB hard drive, double the capacity of the most spacious current model. We’re expecting Microsoft to announce the more compact machine at E3 next month. (Kotaku’s Jason Schreier and Kotaku UK’s Keza MacDonald both independently corroborated this information.)

We hear that the folks at Xbox have yet to finalize the specs for 2017’s Scorpio, although they briefed third-party publishers on the device during a secret event last week, according to a source.

In addition, people familiar with Microsoft’s plans have told Keza that the company is moving toward an iterative approach for their consoles, not unlike Apple. Sources say that instead of one hardware revision every five years or so, as has been the case with previous console cycles, Microsoft plans to move towards an incremental model, with more frequent hardware releases and games that are both forwards and backwards compatible across both Windows 10 and different Xbox models.

The bolded from part of Kotaku article is interesting, didn't thought they would port every game.

The two consoles form part of a wider Microsoft strategy, codenamed “Project Helix” according to one source, to converge Xbox and Windows. For a while now Microsoft has been clear that they want their two prestige brands to work together, as they’ve announced big new exclusives like Gears of War 4 and Sea of Thieves for both Xbox One and PC. Developer sources have told us that Microsoft’s new mandate is to release future games–including the flagship Halo series–on both platforms. The recently-cancelled Fable Legends, which was playable across Windows 10 and Xbox One, was one of the first games to implement this strategy.

So I'm guessing the Xbox 4k output console will release almost immediately after the reveal and that the Xbox 2 will release in early 2017.

Huh? Sounds like this year is just a slim Xbox One and next year is Xbox 1.5 with slight upgrades.

Well it's happening PS4K and Xbox 1.5. If Sony plans to release it this year the new Xbox will be more powerful will be interesting to see though I don't think it will change much as the mindshare is with PS but we will see.

Converging Windows and Xbox is super interesting and something I'm very curious to see how it works. Having the Xbox as an entry level gaming PC is great.

I'm curious of how Sony will behave in terms of software to support this new way of "making consoles". Hopefully their OS will be competitive but I have more faith in MS in that aspect since WIndows is something they are experts on of course.

This at least kinda confirms that the days of hard generations are over which is pretty great.

Scorpio is the perfect name for their plans in regards to the console division.

So funny people thought we would lose a console in the future...

No, we actually gained low spec / high spec alternatives.

Now we have 4 consoles to choose from between Sony and MS, wow lol.

Interesting. A slim Xbox One this year sounds good to me. I hope it's true.

What. Where did they hear that Gears 4 has been announced for PC? Not saying that it won't happen, but I'm pretty sure MS hasn't done it yet.

Now that Xbox has all their games on PC it will be a hard sell to get a lot of gamers to buy the box. I used to own all systems but now I won't have to.

Well Halo Wars 2 is coming to PC. I know its not a mainline title buy it's still a big AAA Halo title.

I would dispute the notion that Halo Wars is as big as the mainline shooter. But it all makes sense in this new supposed strategy of XBOX as a entertainment brand.

We've known this for a while.

People assumed that at least Halo would be kept exclusive as a way to leverage console sales.

After Spencer said he doesnt do half-steps upgrades, i think they make sure its gonna be beefier than the PS4 neo and call it Xbox Two

Well, that rhymes well with the latest rumours from Korea about a console being based on AMDs next Vega GPU which is slated for next year. Could be Xbox Two.

So it looks like a slim model this year and then a NEO competitor next year?

If that's the case NEO will have a significant lead advantage.

Also I wonder how many devices MS plans on releasing?

So PS4 Neo vs Xbox One Slim this Q4 and Xbox Scorpio (Neo competitor) next year.

Sony has first mover advantage again. Microsoft have the cushion to gauge Neo Sales as well as going in with extra GPU grunt.

Interesting nonetheless.

Gears Remastered and Forza Apex are pretty clear indicators imo that they're bringing their flagship games to PC. I'm excited about this!

Glad I haven't purchased an Xbox. Going to get a 1070 this summer, a Neo in the fall/winter, and my gaming needs will be met :)

Maybe just don't expect a generetion leap from that new Xbox it's going to be an upgrade in the same vein as PS4K. Also Spencer has said he's not a fan of upgrades so don't fall for PR speak.

More like extra CPU and gpu grunt. Almost guaranteed it will be using Zen cores which will be miles ahead of jaguar cores used now.

If the Oculus thing is true, PSVR just got quite the slap in the face, since it makes much more sense to get a Rift, which works on PC and Xbox One instead of a VR device that only works on the PS4.

I am interested in the Oculus rumors. I wonder if Microsoft and Oculus are developing a VR headset specifically for the new Xbox or that the current Oculus Rift can be used on the new Xbox.
