Dragon Quest Heroes on sale for $30 (PC/PS4)

Been playing a bit of this since buying yesterday. Seeing the Dragon Quest characters in HD is a joy to behold. Game is super bright and colorful. Also nice to play one of these kinds of games with some downtime and talking to npcs. I didn't like Hyrule Warriors much but this one is really clicking with me. As a DQ fan I highly recommend as it seems like a lot of love went into this one.

The cheapest this has ever been was $20 for PS4 at least, about a month ago from Target. It's been to $30 only once before if I remember correctly... I had my eye on it for a while.

It's a pretty basic hack and slash type game, with equipment upgrades, synthing, a bunch of characters. Defend X point, stop X invasion. There are also some tower defense elements, you can collect little "monster medals" in the levels and deploy them to hold particular areas while you work on another point.

On the one hand I love DQ, but on the other I've never enjoyed a musou game in the slightest, so I guess I will wait for it to be even cheaper. I'm just afraid I'll get to the battle portion and get bored within 30 mins like I have with other musou titles.

Is the game worth 20$? I like how it looks but worried about it getting repetitive.
Some stores here seem to have the PS4 version for very cheap so on the edge right now thanks to the positive DQH2 and Builders hype.
In before PC version gets resolution patch the moment I press order, would be my luck.

What's the point of buying it at this point though? The sequel just launched in Japan and will probably make it to the west, no?

I mean sure, if you wanna wait probably at least a year for a $60 game instead of getting one half the price right now.

I was pretty tempted with the current PSN sale, but decided to hold off. But $27 (via Amazon) for the physical version is too good to pass up. Thanks for the heads up!

I played it on PS4, here's my short and simple review:

It's less repetitive than Hyrule Warriors, and since you can control an entire party of people at once, you can switch between them if one hero is feeling a little button mashy (and you often need to switch), and the enemies are varied and interesting.

The end game is a fairly linear grind to Level 99, but it's helped with certain farming methods and, of course, hunting metal slimes / liquid metal slimes / metal kingslimes.

I enjoyed the hell out of it and am really looking forward to DQH2. If you have any love for the DQ series, DQH is pure fanservice wrapped up in a bright and colorful game with great IQ, a slick framerate, and some challenging fights.

Also, and this might be rare among musou-type games, I actually enjoyed the story, whereas the story in Hyrule Warriors felt very obligatory and dumb.

This is probably a noob question, but if you buy a digital game from the S-E store, do you get a Steam key, or just some kind of standalone installer you download to your PC?

Thanks for the impressions, looks like I should have fun with it.

I can't decide if I want this digitally or on disc. The latter is cheaper, but I feel like this is the kind of game I won't play if I have to swap out a disc to do so!

I generally dislike these types of games, but I love Dragon Quest. Is there hope for me enjoying this?

Edit: Based on an above post it looks like I should.

Waiting for below 20..These type of games are ones that I'm in no rush to play.

Yeah, I just picked up Hyrule Warriors Legends, so I've got plenty of Musou action for the moment.

I did like what I heard about DQH having some non-Musou stuff like the tower defense style stuff I heard it has, which is why I'm definitely looking to pick it up.

I could see myself getting this for $30, once I finish up HW:L, but I don't really need it right now.
