Can anyone tell me about the cities ? Is there only one acting as a hub or multiple ones ?
Iirc the websites states that there's one main city acting as a hub. It has all the necessary npcs and there's really not much to "explore" in it.

Though I've learned Japanese, I've taught myself to be careful of importing Musou games because the main series can have some really advanced Japanese.

Looking at the Torneko gameplay posted in the OP though, I see that I've overestimated the language barrier and this is totally something I can play and fully understand.

Looking forward to importing!

Been working on leveling everyones weapon to lv 5 to get the party skills. Good times. Looking forward to getting new areas unlocked and more of those dungeons to try out. Once I finally get more weapons up to lv 5 with the starting class for the MCs, will mess around with switching classes. As right now its kinda pointless having 2 warriors in the PT, if I bring the other MC along too.

Need to collect more materials for upgrading my accessories also. Thank god as usual killed way too many things so managed to get a bunch of the accessories customized.

Its nice that enemies drop accessories now too. Cant remember if it was like that in the first game or not. Wonder if any will actually drop weapons? So far the answer to that seems to be no though.

I really wonder if there is any sort of AI commands you can give. Since one thing had noticed is the AI appears to be not as aggressive as before? Then again its acting like most "friendly" AI in a musou type of game so its not like this is anything new. Main purpose for the commands would be to more tell them to back off when you are fighting something way too high lv and dont want to keep wasting those world tree leaves to rez them.

Also do agree Cesare is hilariously OP. Good times. Will dub him the Lu Bu of the game for now with all the crazy shit he can do.

Edit:
Does anyone know if characters outside the party are getting full xp?

Edit2:
To answer my own question, according to the in game manual, characters left behind get "a bit" of XP. I think I checked earlier today and in DQH1 it was 50% for characters not in the active party.

Got a chance to play this an hour or so yesterday. The Vita version is really impressive -it's good enough that if I hadn't doubled-dipped, I'd be satisfied with it- and maybe I'm crazy, but the framerate seemed more stable on it as well compared to the PS4 version, which has noticeable dips (it runs at 60 versus the Vita version's 30 FPS).

I like the more open-ended style that they're going for. The game feels more like an action RPG with musou elements and this fits much better than the tower-defense stuff that they went with in the original game. Looking forward to playing a lot more!

If anyone wants to play some co-op, I'm playing on my J-account (lyteedge).

I hope the hub city in this one isn't like the airship of the first.
By that I mean major FPS drop and PS4 literally melting everytime you do stuff in it, I was so scared about it I resold the game.

Went and changed class for the MC since got his dual swords and axe to lv 5. Am working on the martial artist class at the moment. The staff skills is similar to the moves Dirk had in the first game. (which I honestly hated for the most part so this is going to be a bit mind numbing to level lol)

I'm rolling dual swords with the MC, currently level 6 I have other characters for other weapons, so I doubt I'll switch unless there are advanced classes to be unlocked for mastering other combinations like in regular DQ games.

For everyone watching my stream, a network error stopped it, so here's the new link.

Really enjoying the game and finally having Terry back in the team is great. He was super OP in the first game - I think I defeated the final boss without taking damage.

To those playing how is the combat so far? DQH felt weak on that aspect since the combat felt like a straight line of square botton presses and triangle whenever you wanted to end which didn't feel good afte doing the same move over and over since there was a pause after finishing a string and when you got to higher lvls I just spammed magic attacks.

Edit: Also does the Red Head play like Yangus? I liked playing with him since being able to charge his moves made his combat the most interesting.

Combat is the same for the most part. So if you didnt like the combat then, you wont like it now.

Also yes she plays similar to Yangus with the type of moves, but some things are also different.

They made another one of these already?

Been a little over a year with the first one being released in 2/26/2015 and this one being 05/27/2016

Not to mention they greatly improved a bunch of stuff with the game, so this title is quite the large upgrade over the previous one with the gameplay mechanics. Though combat is still the same, button press combos + activated skills from a quick menu.

Uuugh... if this game comes out in the west I'd be sooo tempted to pick it up based on visuals alone. Thing is, I dislike the gameplay of Musou games. =/

12 hours in - average level of the main party is 25, people I haven't used at all/for a while are at 22.

I just unlocked the second multiplayer map, which I cleared offline with my current party. If anyone's looking for a place to grind, that's the best location. I even got lucky and arrived at a "lucky floor", where all 4 characters had maximum tension and my enemies were 4 (?) metal slimes. A perfect situation for the exp boosting item (btw., the effect of those ends when you leave a floor of the multiplayer dungeon).

Like I mentioned a few times, while the game is much better than DQH1 since there's no tower defense, but that said, I feel like the pacing is a bit weird.

For those interested, how the gameplay look works:
First you spend about half an hour if not more exploring every nook and cranny of a new area. You find multiple closed paths, some of which require characters you don't have.
You also find closed chests (have yet to get a key for those).

After that, there's usually a set of battles, some of which can go for very, very long. Luckily, you can go back to town between those fights, but I'd still prefer if they were a bit shorter on average.

When you're done with one "chunk", you're transported back to the hub town, where new things are waiting for you - new quests, items in shops etc. After taking care of this, you can proceed to the new area.

Pacing complaints aside, I'm glad that there aren't that many quests available at once. Mostly because in most cases the reward is a secret and usually not worth the hassle.

By the way, I made a playlist containing all my archived streams so far, so if someone wants to check the first ~12 hours, here's the link.

Bah, I really want to get this now but I should wait to come out here. Absolutely love the first game and I always want more Dragon Quest. Awesome to see the positive impressions at least.

Also yes she plays similar to Yangus with the type of moves, but some things are also different.

I still want to play it since I did like DQH and a lot of the things it does but I really wanted more combo variety or at the very least make combat faster so I can kill enemies quickly. I just felt that 70% of combat on DQH was squarex3 followed by triangle because why would I do the shorter combos? And the other 30% was just spamming magic without really thinking which one was better for the occasion. Hopefully becoming monsters spices up the combat a little since to me it's the only aspect of the game that holds it from being great, instead it's just good (to me personally).

Strong enemies are still generally the same. Being the giant damage sponges. Though this game does seem to have added in weaknesses to enemies so sometimes there are certain attacks which will deal more damage than normal to such enemies. But since its not obvious what that might be its a bit of trial and error.

The shorter combos are for different situations with weaker enemies like S + T = launch the enemy into the air usually then the others which are combinations of Square and Triangle do different things depending. Though not all characters have those combos it seems.

Being a monster honestly for myself the only real advantage to it is that you do not take any damage during that period of time so its a bunch of free damage.

Then with the rest of the coin stuff it becomes memorizing which monsters are the actual summon / support / transformation types.

One thing for sure is overall outside of the combat which is still the same the gameplay has improved a lot.

Big enemies can be fun, I remember killing a Stoneman ~10 levels earlier than I was supposed to (got a quest for him later). Each non-critical attack did 1 dmg to him and he could 1/2 shot everyone in my party. Took me 2 attempts, but wasn't that hard!

Streaming again, 12 hours in.

With Maribel all you need to do is just keep throwing mera at him. Since at that point in the game outside of crits is the only thing that damages that particular monster.

I got to the city and couldn't figure out how to progress. There was a flashing dot on the map but nobody there. Turns out, the download version of the game downloads more stuff after the initial download and it wasn't done yet. Still isn't. How annoying.

Since this has co-op am pretty sure they would localize this. As it really is great. Nice too how they balanced the characters for party play.

Really am happy with what they did with the game. As said it way too many times now massive improvements over the first.

---------

On a side note killing metal slimes, now they will sometimes drop "Metal Keys" which you can use at Rika's Inn counter place to go to bonus metal slime levels. Though might be worth not using them till later as it seems like you can select standard metal slime / hagure metal / metal kings. Which are all separated by levels with the 3 selections.

1 / 20 / 50? I think it might have been. Do not exactly remember the suggested level for the last one but maybe it was 50.

Weird thing is the keys dont show up in your inventory though or important items. So you need to pay attention after you defeat a metal slime in the event if they drop something. At least I did not see it shown anywhere in the item / important item lists.

Even though I'm super early in I love the way the fields are in this game. So much better than the way it was in the last one. I ended up spending a little too much time already in the first one just having fun taking out slimes and such.

Yeah it really is quite nicely done. So far each of the areas have a different design to them too which is nice.

Though I would kill for more harvesting points as am all addicted to upgrading my accessories lol.

It is interesting how the accessories are not all the same with the upgrade requirements. Which has me thinking some are an actual waste of resources vs others. With the type of materials requirements they have. Its a different take on varied stats I suppose, but an odd one. So now am a bit more careful when I upgrade things and be sure to check what the requirements are before starting.

Just completed my first huge battle and whoa was that fun. Had a little trouble at the last part of the.m battle but thankfully it wasn't unmanageable. But some of those attacks the enemy was giving me like the
archer assault on the king at the pyramid
was so fun.

Really this game is a huge improvement on the first. And I loved that one too. But all the changes they've made and adjustments really have made this a much more enjoyable experience. Feels even more dragon quest like too the way it's been done. Can't wait to play more. Wanna try multiplayer sometime too if I can ever get the time to play it.

Also now seriously thinking of double dipping and getting the vita version. Did the same with dragon quest builders and that was a great option to have. Kinda want this for vita too as well now.

For mindless leveling and resource collection the Vita ver is most def worth having. Its crazy too how this has cross-platform MP also. Had though it was quite impressive that they went through the trouble to do that, but very cool as it keeps the userbase together so to speak.

Credits rolling, I just finished the game. As much better as the sequel was, I'm not going to do the postgame, because I've had enough button mashing for a few months (my hand actually hurts).

I was very surprised with how short the main story was (~23 hours) compared to the previous one (~35?), although since the first game dragged like heck near the end, I'm happy that they didn't go for the forced length.

I also did ~70% quests, since I didn't feel like rushing and wanted to enjoy my time with the game.

I also did the first two multiplayer dungeons multiple times, both online and offline. They're fun, although a bit short.

Dragon Quest Heroes 2 is what the first game should have been. It barely has elements of tower defense, and big fields/multiplayer are a great addition.
While I was bored near the end of DQH1, I think the second one is the perfect length before the player gets bored with the (let's face it ;) same-ish combat.

One complaint which I have is dumb party AI. I'm not expecting them to perform advanced combos or parry attacks, but healing me when I lose almost half of HP would be great. Also if they actually attacked most of the time and not just used their buffs/debuffs and run around, most fights would be over much faster.

Also, if anyone's interested, here's the playlist with my full playthrough.

Oh that makes me want it even more since for some strange reason I love mindless leveling. I really need to try the multiplayer sometime.

How're the new characters compared to the old ones? Is Terry still OP as fuck? Anyone a suitable Bianca or Nera replacement?

Terry was my main in 1, but he doesn't seem to be so OP here. I think the main reason is that you can't get so many passive skills which increase your tension (I think it was the case in 1, but it was so long ago), so you can no longer split/self heal brute force your way to the invulnerable state over and over again. In the end I kicked him out of my main party for Alena, since having 2 sword users (even if the MC was rolling double swords) made the combat boring.

Even Aｌena with her double shadow clone dashing out damage numbers on multiple enemies doesn't charge her tension that fast.

Maybe they can be made more OP with an accessory which affects the tension increase, but I don't think I got one during my playthrough.

I've played for a while, and I really appreciate all of the changes they made to every aspect of the game. Unfortunately, the combat itself doesn't feel that different. I don't like how imprecise and grandiose most of the attacks are. They've pared back the big packs of enemies, but left the special attacks virtually the same. The result is big attacks that hit only one or two enemies and leave nearby ones alone. It's to the point where I just ignore most enemies because trying to actually do damage to a lone enemy or two is a waste of time.

I'm hoping that as I try out other classes, it'll feel a bit better, but we'll see.

I think it's the worst with Bagi, because the tornadoes are really huge but don't really hit as many enemies as you'd think it would if they're not right in your face.

The good news is that you encounter huge packs of enemies during later game battles. Sadly, fields are quite empty-ish until the very end, but on the other hand exploration would be a huge pain if they weren't.

I forgot to mention one important thing - the game runs surprisingly well on the PS4.
Even when there's total chaos happening on the screen with multiple characters and enemies using their special attacks, explosions, and effects, the framerate doesn't seem to really drop. I think I had one fight which had some performance problems, and one small location was pretty bad, although not bad enough to make playing harder.

If you didn't like it mostly because of the tower defense aspect and the whole game having 0 exploration, then yes. Those are two biggest changes and I think everyone agrees that they're for the better.

All aspects of the game, like various systems, story, etc. Have been vastly improved.

So what's replaced the tower defense aspect of the game?
Missions usually make you go through an area/dungeon or just destroying enemies as they keep appearing. Some have switches and other gimmicks from mainline DQ games.
Sometimes you have to protect an NPC, but it's usually done less by strategically placing monster coins and more by just defeating attackers. Also, monsters summoned with coins will now follow you instead of standing in place (their priority is still fighting enemies though, so they'll most likely stop to clean up leftovers).

You also have to remember that time-wise, I'd say that battles are just 2/3-1/2 of the game and the rest is exploration of big areas. Think MMO fields.

Parakeetman

No one wants a throne you've been sitting on!
So what's replaced the tower defense aspect of the game?

Nothing really. Besides protecting a VIP. There has not been a single tower defense bullshit yet which is nice. Though later in the game
they will give you a defend the main VIP which is pretty tough if you are not leveled enough to take out the enemies fast enough and shut down the portals in time to stop the advances of the enemies.

How're the new characters compared to the old ones? Is Terry still OP as fuck? Anyone a suitable Bianca or Nera replacement?

They are all pretty good actually for the most part. Though they balanced the skill / passive unlocks better so you do not make as stupid powerful characters as before.

Basically if you want to use "Bianca" or "Nera" its class change into a Thief (bow) or Cleric "Wand" and you will have the same general attack skills.

The game does not seem to like the fog effect though on occasion esp when it rolls in. Outside of that you can pop off all sorts of crazy shit and it doesnt seem to care.
the massive war was a pretty good test of the games performance
