So... Shinobi delivered a few interesting hints in this video

- Said that Rare is turning into a 'New IP factory'. Suggested that Rare are working on another new IP, beside Sea of Thieves (though didn't say whether that would be at this E3)

If this is true, I can't help but feel disappointed. New IPs are nice and all, but what about all their other IPs? They can't just sit on them, can they? And no, their IPs don't need to be constantly outsourced to other developers. It'll be a shame if they'll just keep outsourcing them and not have anything to do with them themselves.

Also, what does this mean for the Battletoads rumor then?

I think they just mean third party developed / not developed in house

It doesn't mean a difference they are confusing the two situations 1st party is funded/published/own the IP which is all true for Scalebound. Or Third party which is externally funded/published by a third party publisher/don't own the IP.

Unfortunately, it doesn't necessarily mean that. MS defines first-party as anything either by their internal studios, or that they own the IP to. Scalebound and Recore for example, are first-party in their eyes. Between SoT, Scalebound, HWars, Recore, Gears, Forza H, and Crackdown, I'd say that's a already a fairly heavy first-party focus.

It's probably less 'partnerships', and more 'a deal with a 3rd party studio'.

Capcom exclusive's almost a lock, and I believe Sakaguchi's new current-gen IP will be another of MS left-of-field announcements.

Oh yeah, thats what I meant. Didnt mean that they were going to lock down Titanfall 2 or anything as exclusive :)

After Insomniac, Remedy, Playground, Assemble, Platinum, Crytek, Armature, Capcom Vancouver etc, its going to be really good to see who they tap up next!

Rare has always been a "New IP factory", for Nintendo and for Microsoft.
Only exceptions were Donkey Kong Country and Kinect Sports (with 3 of them in a row).

If you look at their games output during the N64, it was like :

- Killer Instinct Gold
- BlastCorps
- Goldeneye
- Diddy Kong Racing
- Banjo Kazooie
- Perfect Dark
- Donkey Kong 64
- Banjo Tooie
- Jet Force Gemini
- Mickey Speedway USA
- Conker
- Plus unreleased titles : Kameo and Dinosaur Planet

On 13 games, only 2 (KI and Banjo) were true sequels, count 3 if you consider DK64 as a Donkey Kong Country sequel, but that's still a very small amount of "non new IP games".

But yes, these game were awesome and we would love to see them back, but maybe that's not Rare best job.

So they're going back to their roots then? :)

I recently found this in one of their job ads:
"We're looking for someone with expertise in rigging creatures and characters who is passionate about story-based games"
https://www.rare.co.uk/careers/lead-technical-character-artist-may16

They're hiring an Art Director, Animation Director and Technical Art Director as well.

There's a chance it could be for Sea of Thieves, but maybe it is for their next new IP?

Sea of Thieves doesn't strike me like the kind of story-based game, so who knows

Also, what does this mean for the Battletoads rumor then?

Nothing? It can still happen. Can be a smaller game, can be developed by someone else...

Just because it's outsourced doesn't mean Rare doesn't have input. Unless you're really attached to specific coders at Rare I don't see why this is a concern

Oh God please bring back PGR, especially after thr Driveclub team was disbanded.

I want some of that real-time weather and the return of kudos points.

FH has some of that going on, but what it misses is a broad series of defined tracks that you can master with precision, with inch-perfect power sliding as well as straight forward speed.

Ask people their favourite Forza Horizon circuit, and you're probably going to struggle to get anyone to think of any, much less a favourite.

I do expect Sea of Thieves to have a story of some sort, but yeah, "story-based" seems like a strong word for a game like SoT. Hopefully E3 will shed some light on how the game is structured.

I'm not opposed to outsourcing it either.

-Bring in Gregg Mayles and Paul Machacek from Rare as creative consultants.
-David Wise as the composer.
-Maybe new character designs from Kev Bayliss? (he did some work on KI Season 2, but that was before he became a full time employee at Playtonic.)

Why can't you say nothing more than "I'm so excited for..."? Why do you even say something in the first place if you can't share any information?

Anyone else hoping for Sea Of Thieves to have a bunch of easter eggs? Would love to find a hidden chest and end up getting a Banjo doll or something.

That's my biggest wish for the game. If I know Rare, there is no reason to even doubt that SoT will be filled with easter eggs.

Speaking of Rare working on new IP's..

It's time for Banjo Kart.

Even though it'll probably be Minecraft Kart now if we ever get a kart racing game.

There is so much potential for easter eggs in Sea of Thieves. :)

-Captain Blackeye (already teased by Rare)
-Project Dream music?
-Treasure Trove Cove?
-Jolly Roger's lagoon?
-Mr. Pants constellation in the sky?
-An overgrown Roysten that roams the sea?

I hope they don't hold back.

Rare has always been a new ip factory. Its why they have such a rich and diverse library.

As for Battletoads. Im perfectly fine with outsourcing old Rare Ip. Killer Instinct is a perfect example of a great reboot to one of their old franchises.

PS: Very excited for Sea of Thieves

They need to make a proper platforming game for the franchise before they start dragging more cars into it.
They should use the RC Pro-Am IP if they want to make a racing game. They could still bring in characters like Banjo, Conker, Rash and characters from Xbox IPs.

I don't mind Rare continuing to be a new IP factory, but first they have to give us the game that was promised in 2000 and that was never delivered. People will never let that shit go and I don't understand how Rare/Microsoft can't see that.

Wasn't there some mention of a "4 team setup" at Rare? One was SoT, another was Rare Replay (which I believe has since dissolved, with its members consolidated into the other teams); 2 were unaccounted for. 3rd could quite easily be Battletoads, and 4th prototyping new IP.

In time. I think it's best they work to repair some public faith before they go ahead and attempt their 2 most sought classics.

Now is probably not the right time for Banjo-Threeie. It would seem suspicious if they announced Banjo-Threeie so shortly after the success of the Yooka-Laylee kickstarter.

Not to mention the fact that Playtonic has the mindshare as the "true Rare" team (even though Rare has just as many original BK team members as Playtonic does).

I just don't think a Banjo-Threeie announcement would be recieved well right now. I would love to be proven wrong, though.

Yooka-Laylee looks terrific, so I'm not that broken up about not getting a new Banjo tbh.

I can't see how this would be a good idea - especially for a studio like Rare that needs to start fresh after a rough few years - to tackle two full project in production at the same time. At best, they have other stuff in early preproduction (all studios do, at all times), or it's something Rare related but outsourced.

We aren't going to see another AAA Rare-developped game until much closer to Sea of Thieve release, most likely after that too.

An entire GAF page filled with healthy conversation on Rare, I can't be more hyped for E3 !!! Can't wait to see the Sea of Thieves on stage presentation :D

Microsoft finally utilizing Rare and Rare's IPs correctly does that to people. :) Let's hope they can keep it going after Sea of Thieves as well.

There is no-way that a new Battletoads is an AAA game. Also, please don't let it be Iron Galaxy developing the new BT.

Personally I think it will be outsourced. If Rare is working on another IP it will be AAA.

Remembering those cancelled projects makes me excited to see what the new studios can do now that their apparent creative leash is removed.

Did it need confirmation? Game was announced last E3 for a spring 2016 release, of course they are going to show it. But don't get your hopes up, it's supposed to be a $20 digital game and won't have AAA production values.

Is that true as far as the price is concerned? Either way, this game is one of many on my radar.

E3, HURRY UP!

Where'd you get that from. We've had people say multiple times its a AAA game

Wrong. Why do people keep saying this?

It was always gonna be at E3. The game was already delayed to the Fall...we need the DEETS.
I would be surprised if it wasn't at E3
I dunno. I felt like there was a chance that one or two of Microsoft's games would skip E3 and show up at Gamescom instead.

Not according to Shinobi.

It wouldn't bother me if it wasn't a AAA game, though.

I can't specify which game just yet, but there's a huge exclusive remake coming to Windows 10 and Xbox One. It's a third party game being funded by MS. :)

A new 2D Battletoads done with the same passion as ORI and the Blind Forest would be very welcome :)

I'd be so happy if Moon was doing Battletoads. Ori is one of my GOATs.
