God of War details, in-depth RPG systems, No load screens, plus more

While you assume complete control of Kratos, you also passively control his son throughout the entire game, and both characters grow and evolve. There’s a single button dedicated to your son, and its use depends on the context. He becomes an active participant in combat, traversal, exploration, and puzzle-solving. In this, the game is about passing knowledge onto your child. At the beginning of your journey, you teach a reluctant child how to fire a bow and hunt. As you progress through the game, that becomes second-nature to the boy, and it’s clear that your knowledge has been passed on.
This bond isn’t the only new, surprising element of God of War. The entire game is presented as a single, uninterrupted shot. Once you’re in, you’re in. No load screens, no cinematics, no fades to black. Kratos and his son’s journey across the world of Norse mythology -- which takes place an undisclosed amount of time past God of War III -- will be told in a wholly singular, and honestly unique manner.
Right from the get-go, it was apparent that this was a very different God of War game. We now view the world from behind Kratos’ shoulders, with the previously-static camera now being controlled using the right stick. This part is important, because the world is rife with hidden paths, secret nooks, and collectables hidden all over the place. During my extended demo, we wandered off the beaten path and discovered a number of crafting resources, pieces of armor, and idols. God of War will feature larger, much more in-depth RPG systems, something Sony will discuss further down the road.
While the E3 demo was a quieter, more character-driven look at the game, Barlog assured me that the series isn’t shrugging off its bombastic, cinematic roots. The reason they didn’t focus the E3 demo on a huge, spectacle-filled set piece is that it's a given that the game will have those. Barlog and Sony Santa Monica have mastered those moments, so with this demo, they wanted to surprise fans and non-fans of the series with the unexpected.

Sounds even more amazing than what I was expecting. And thank goodness I can control the camera and have room to explore more.

"This game is about Kratos teaching his son how to be a god, and the kid teaching Kratos how to be human again."

I can't believe I am so excited for a God of War game.

Well this is a significantly different direction for the series. Okay by me because I never liked god of war so much and now I'm more interested. This will be divisive, but how much so?

This game has looked dope as hell so far.

If you'd told me before yesterday that I would be PUMPED for the new God of War, I'd have laughed in your face.

This is my dream evolution to GoW that I didn't even know I wanted.
As a fan of all previous 6 games, I love this new direction SSM has taken.

I didn't think it was possible but this is now my most anticipated Sony first-party game over Horizon. Everything about it looks/sounds amazing! Also digging the way the combat looks, seems to be a bit more tactical and less button-mashy but we will need to see more obviously.

I can't believe how amazing this game sounds.

And I was so done with Kratos. I was so done with God of War. There is no way to grow up this series for 2016, I said. This is a juvenile property best left in 2005, I said.

Then all this comes out and I am so humbled to admit how wrong I was. Santa Monica is showing me everything I didn't think God of War could be.

And I love it.

Didn't think it was possible for me to be down for another God of War after II, but this sounds fucking rad.

That should be somewhat soothing to those that were upset at how the game felt so much different.

So your son is going with you for what seems to be the whole game? Euhhh...Those TLoU jokes seem pretty spot on right now.
What about the combat though? It looked pretty slow from what I saw.
Also, I always made jokes about what people wanted in a new GoW, so stuff like crafting and RPG elements etc...well there you go.

Not feeling the one-shot idea. Found it remarkably boring in MGSV. All the other stuff sounds sweet.

Love the sound of this.
Cheers to Barlog & team for having the balls to do something different.

A lot of the GoW fanbase might be gritting their teeth right now, but I imagine the end result will be something really special.

Sounds excellent

Really like this direction. If they can balance it well with the spectacle of GoW it'll be a home run.

Who cares about combat? Apparently everyone played God of War for the rich, emotional journey.

And now there's fucking crafting. Jesus.
