Digital Foundry - Several sources indicate Neo will launch this year

In the latest DF article that speculated about pluses and minuses of 4K focus on both Neo and Scorpio, Richard Leadbetter also mentioned this at the very end:
Several sources have indicated to me that PlayStation Neo launches this year, despite its E3 no-show. If that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how developers utilise its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus. And we can be equally as sure that Microsoft will be watching just as intently as it gears up for its own next-gen roll-out.

As a reminder, Andrew House mentioned after E3 that he believes that public is now more attuned to the Apple sales style in which hardware is available for purchase almost immediately after the announcement. If this is indeed the Sony's plan, Neo could be announced anytime and enter sales few weeks later.

Notable upcoming gaming events with big Sony presence:
Gamescom - August 17-21 [2 months after E3]
Tokyo Games Show - September 15-20 [3 months after E3]
Paris Games Week - October 27-31 [4.5 months after E3]
PSX - early December
Playstation Meeting ?

A launch around Christmas wouldn't be the dumbest move and, even though this may be more coincidental than anything, getting ahead of Microsoft will help them.

Outside of enthusiasts, though, it'll be interesting to see how interested people are in buying these new consoles.

Good strategy. This is of course nothing like the Saturn situation as it's not a entirely new platform. This strategy wouldn't work for a new console that could not play old games.

Not sure why anyone would buy NEO with Scorpio on the way. Sony will likely release a console of similiar strength like scorpio next year or the year after.
Power difference is too large between NEO and Scorpio. I'd rather wait for a upgraded Neo instead of lashing out money for both

edit: clarified a little

Question: Can I say Microsoft is the first-mover in iterative consoles and Sony was reactionary with Neo?

Scorpio alongside Xbox+Win10 integration looks more planned out and cohesive, while Sony's Neo specs suggests a hasty half-step.

Most likely since PSX will miss November.

Not really, this time it feels like they have some kind of deal that both team-up together push the ".5" gen to make gamers can approve this change.

They both have the same chip manufactuer.

AMD is the real reason all of this is happening.

IMO, Neo should be called PlayStation 4 Premium [4S is too close to Xbone S], and marketed as premium offering for those who want to enjoy PS4 content.

Maxed out 1080p games, better VR, support for 4K multimedia [streaming and UHD discs], and some 4K gaming if devs want to support it.

If it can land at $400 before this holiday season starts, it will sell nicely.

I see them announcing this at PSX.

IMO that's too late.

Why would you buy Scorpio with PS5 on the way? This cat and mouse will continue past Scorpio.

Completely changing your strategy due to poor console sales and announcing your iterative platform a year and a half out to shoot your newly announced slim model in the knees is planned out and cohesive?

Thats...thats an interesting take.

Uncompressed pixels this year? Awesome.

Anyway September release after being announced at either TGS or Gamescom.

My guess is that the Neo was partly conceived due to concerns that the PS4 would struggle with "proper" unhindered VR games, so I think the Neo is central to the PSVR strategy.

The ONLY game that we heard that has issues with PSVR is RE7, and that is the traditional flatTV game that has slapped on VR support. I can see PSVR getting biggest boost from Neo in such games, but I don't expect those games will come often. Same as with smartphone games, best and most popular ones are those who are built for the touchscreen.

This makes no sense. If Neo is ready to launch this year, that will make Scorpio reactionary if anything.

Well I don't have an Xbox and have zero interest in getting one while I enjoy my PS4 so there's that. I really want a good outline of what the benefits of the NEO will be before I think about buying one though. Looking forward to them finally unveiling it.

I can't see it but then again I didn't think we would hear anything about scorpio and neo at e3 either.
If it is released after psvr then that would be a total shitty move. Spend $400 on a psvr and now to get the benefits of that purchase you should really spend another $400 on a ps neo to get its full potential.

Because a few years after a stronger ps will release. And then an xbox will release after that. At this point I'm just sticking with one going forward.

Can't see them going with a 4TF machine for atleast two years when their biggest competitor has a 6TF machine.

Either they upgrade NEO specs or they'll have another machine for us next year

Power is something but not only thing that make console sell.
Besides, it's not like that's first time Sony having a not most powerful console.

The Neo is launching this October alongside PS VR.

Launch titles will include:

  • Half Life 3
  • Titanfall 2
  • Last of Us 2
  • Dark Souls 3 DLC
  • Bloodborne 2

Including full access to the PS2/PS3 catalogs playable and saves carry over.

At least, thats what I took away...

Not a particularly good guess I'm afraid, since PSVR games must run at 60fps on PS4 which means you need to design accordingly.

Plus the entire point of doing PSVR is that you get access to a part of the huge PS4 player base.

Could you define iterative console? Because PS2 could run all PS1 games with somewhat enhanced graphics, so it could be the first iterative console.

They should Saturn this thing. Since they've kept the Neo super secret and no one knows about it there won't be any damage to PS4 sales at all. It'll be the perfect plan.

Can't wait for that Neo patch for Uncharted 4 so it plays better on my Scorpio in 16 months time.

People is not going to buy both. PSVR costs $400 and Neo won't cost less than $350. That's a lot of money.

If we want to talk about 'a lot of money" Oculus is $600 and Vive is $800, without the cost of strong PC that can run them. Any PS4 model + PSVR will still be much more affordable than PC+PCVR.

Well when Sony's supposedly mandating Neo support on all games shipping after October, that's probably a good indication that they're going to launch it around that time. Maybe a little earlier, maybe a little later.

I think considering they see it as a hardcore gamer device, they're not going to be worried too much about whether it interferes with PSVR or not as they probably are not going to ship too many out compared to regular PS4s.

I dont think theres any sort of technical way to decide who did it first. Publicly Microsoft is the first enabler, and will probably be regarded as such if its a successful move, I think they wanted that.

I have a PC on which I can play Xbox games, I would purchase a Neo for exclusives. Wouldn't something have leaked by now if Sony was going to release consoles annually?

House himself apparently told Watch that they're going to launch it this year and it's part of their push for 20m units in the fiscal year

Andrew House just confirm he want Neo release this year on a Japan interview, no time for upgrade.

Could be, he say he want Neo release this year so that they can achieve 20m target.

Some points
- Neo is for 2 niche group, customer with 4K TV but without 4K content, customer who want better graphic.

- No smart phone cycle, want to maintain stable environment for developers.

- Not a new gen, just provide a premium option. Outside graphical performance no other advantages compare to PS4, experience will be same. (Might be talk about multiplayer level play field)

- Neo is NOT because of VR, VR experience will be the same 60fps, but watching VR video will be better.

- Neo does not add too much extra work for dev, development environment still same as PS4.

You mean to tell me Sony and Microsoft will have released 2 consoles in the time it took Nintendo to release the NX?

Cmerrill

You don't need to be empathetic towards me.
Just release it soon so I can buy it.

I already sold my basic ps4 and have games I want to play this autumn. The sooner the better.

Because people like Sony exclusives? And the price difference when the Scorpio launches will be big.
