Fate/Extella E3 Trailer

Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star announced for both PS4 and PS Vita by XSeed, it's expected to release on Winter in NA. I has been confirmed that both PS4 and PS Vita versions will get physical releases. It also got two best of the show nominees.

Also, for those that want to read impressions:

The game is looking better than expected and hopefully more Servants will be revealed soon, really want to know who will be Assassin.

Really digging that music, too.

As for other servants, i remember seeing a few weeks back a cast list image floating around, though I had heard it may be fake. Trying to find it though, who knows? It may give some idea of who else to expect, regardless.

Nice, I'm not really a fan of musou games so might skip this one but character models looks good. Wouldn't mind another Fate fighting game tbh

Ok, I found it, but...its all in Japanese (which seems obvious in retrospect). So I can't read it.

That said, the person who posted this did post a few possible servants based off this list, and from there I can figure out a few.

-Nobutoshi Canna:
Cu Chulainn
, aka Lancer from Fate/Stay Night
-Yu Asakawa:
Medusa
, aka Rider from Fate/Stay Night
-Otsuka Akio:
Iskander/Alexander the Great
, aka Rider from Fate/Zero
-Tadahisa Saizen:
Hercules
, aka Berserker from Fate/Stay NIght
-Risa Taneda: She has done several characters in Fate/Grand Order, so it could be one of the following: Shielder,
Mata Hari
(Assassin),
Marie Antoinette
(Rider), or
Kiyohime
(Berserker). My money's on Shielder, she's one of the faces of Grand Order and relatively popular to boot.
-Miyuki Sawashiro: Like Risa Taneda, she voices several from Grand Order:
Mordred
(Saber),
Artemis
(Archer),
Rama
(Saber), or
Nightingale
(Berserker). I would bet on the first Saber, but who knows? (This game does have three Sabers present already, too)

Though bear in mind, like I said, this list may be fake. But I would be very surprised if Fate/Stay Night-Lancer and Zero-Rider aren't in this. They're both popular (especially Zero-Rider).

Y'know, I find it interesting that they announced localization so far in advance of the Japanese release complete with demoing it at E3. I'm used to localizations of Type-Moon content to be slow, usually announced well after Japanese release, and often a lot of things slipping through the cracks.

Wonder what changed recently. I mean, just a few months ago we got a Steam release of Melty Blood which was also the first English release of it, now Extella's western release has been announced before the game even released in Japan, and there might have been something else I forgot.

Wonder if we're looking at a change in licensing strategy for Type-Moon akin to how Games Workshop started handing out Warhammer licenses like candy, or if recent events have been a coincidence and this speedy localization is because Marvelous owns XSEED.

I was thinking about this earlier after seeing various people on twitter the past few days talking about playing it at the booth.

Has it even been playable in Japan yet? Because I don't remember seeing anything about its gameplay (beyond magazine articles) prior to E3. Its very curious. Can't complain, though.

I hope F/SN Lancer gets in.

He also has a role in Fate/Extra, so I would say he has a fairly good chance. I hope so!

wait. wtf was that transformation into some brawler?

Both Nero and Tamamo have some new transformation, its apparently part of the story. Nero seems to gain flames and some gladiator-like armor, Tamamo gains two tails temporarily.

I'll buy this regardless, but I'm confused as to how the muso gameplay works in regard to the Holy Grail War.

From what I've read, this isn't exactly the Holy Grail War. For one, in the Extra universe, there isn't one in the first place, its the Moon Cell (long story. Set on the moon, magic ran out a long time ago, etc etc), though it offers the same basic reward. Extella is set after Nero and her master won their war, but upon reaching the end they're confronted with Tamamo who won her war, which shouldn't be possible. They set to warring with each other because...well, there can only be one winner.

Apparently each side gets a team, though we don't know who is on what. No idea where Altera comes in, though.

Some of the mobs in the video look to be the mobs the Moon Cell used during its war, so they're likely expendable mooks.

I gotta say though I do find Musou and Fate to be slightly oxymoronic.

Maybe this is just me, but I've sorta always associated the battles of the Fate series to be a bit more deliberately paced, at least as depicted in the animes. A great deal of emphasis on knowing one's enemy - Discover and exploit their weaknesses while doing your best to conceal and defend against your own, as well as taking time to psychologically profile your opponent and strategizing.

For a frame of reference on what I'm talking about for new guys. Fate is the Dark Souls of anime - And I'm not saying that lightly or following that stupid "The Dark Souls of X" meme. I mean it literally.

I suppose I'll have to see what the battles against real opponents look like though to be sure, but thus far I've only seen battles against expendable mooks.

Idk why they made this Extra and not just all Fate. Would've been even more amazing.

It is all of Fate.

Neither Altera or Jeanne d'arc were in Extra (or CCC), and there are more coming. They're pulling servants from everything. Its just using the Extra universe as a base.

That's a great point, I've never thought of it that way. Thank you for sharing.

When it comes to Servant begging I really want Kintoki (Berserker) and Shuten-douji (Assassin) since I'm a big Raita Honjou fan since playing Valkyria Chronicles.

Aside from those two I just want the best Lancer ever!

My feelings when it comes to most Musou collabs are that even if it might not fit as much as I want to the franchise at hand, it's still the only thing I'm getting (at least Fate has gotten a couple of other games in different genres). I really don't think too hard about them and I'll be trying to enjoy them for what they are, fanservice-heavy games.

Musou-style gameplay is a perfect fit for the series, and all I've ever wanted when thinking of my ideal Fate game! Fighting off Gilgamesh as he unleashes Gate of Babylon looks as beautiful in motion as I ever could have imagined it to be. What endlessly excites me for Extella is the roster of Servants the game will have to offer, which is bound to be quite an extensive one with all of the Fate continuities coming together to create a single cast. Better news yet is that The Umbral Star is right around the corner and is scheduled to be released by year's end!

Probably will buy this, not a fan of musou style but it's Fate. Oh and XSEED published game.

Shiki from KnK won't be in right as it's Fate only.

Is there a genre name for these Dynasty Warrior-type games?

Not really it seems. More and more companies are starting to make their own, even Ubisoft's "For Honor" is a Dynasty Warriors type game (though no one wants to admit it lol)

I would just call them them "beat um ups" to use an old school term. Seems like the natural progression of the genre to me. Most call them "warrior games" or "musou games" same thing.

But this is the same engine if I remember as Senran Kagura... Marvelous! made that too right?

Honestly, given Type-Moon's willingness to just throw characters wherever, I wouldn't count anything out. Hell, they had a KnK event in F/GO with both forms of Ryougi playable
and she was the hidden boss in the original Fate/Extra.

I'd like to see some footage from the Vita version personally. Though since it's a musou it's safe to assume that there will be some framerate drops, I guess.

Whoa, thanks!

I've only read the original Visual Novel so I wouldn't know. :/

Its not as if they have been discouraged from putting Shiki and Arc and other TM properties into their works before.

A 2D fighter would work so well for this series.

Besides Unlimited Codes and Melty Blood you mean? French bread is working on their own new IP now, so who knows if they would come back to TM, even with that expy shout out character

Whoa, thanks!

I'd recommend getting Fate Extra. You can buy it on PSN through PSTV and Vita.
