yeah, ive that and another one around my place, bought for the same price! partly cause i was naively still wanting an AES back then, partly because man those huge carts are so cool

I'm so jealous of people who can find AES deals. I have an AES and still only 1 cart for it. They just never show up in my area, and if they do people want BANK for even common shit.

Exactly just as a talking piece/historical appreciation angle its cool to own a cart so massive!

Yeah I don't expect something like this to ever happen again either lol but keep on the lookout, who knows, crazy finds still exist!

Hands down, AES has the coolest looking carts/game packaging of any console in existence.

Enjoy this.

Video Games & Computer Entertainment - Sept.1990 article on Neo Geo. Unfortunately, the first page is pretty marred. Thankfully though, the second page with its screenshots of early-looking versions of launch games was not.

Is Alpha Mission 2/ASO II LAST GUARDIAN the NG game that's the least talked about relative to its quality level

seriously I love that game

I clearly remember looking at the back cover of Alpha Mission 2 at a Babbage's store in a mall near Chicago (obviously that store has long since become a GameStop.) The game looked really awesome and the best looking vertical scrolling shooter for the home I'd ever seen,

I thought RB2 was just RBS but with Li Xiangfei and Rick Strowd added.

Gameplay mechanics are a little different. Backgrounds in RBS are a bit better and there is a bit more animation in RBS. Having said all the above they are very close though. Both are great games but I like RBS more. Just personal preference.

I would have to agree, RBS edges it a little. I like the overall presentation a bit more. IIRC there were a few stages in RB2 that didn't even have plane shifting.

I love all of the RB games, as mentioned, there are some differences, but it is subtle.

RBS is two-lane fighting (FF2), but RB2 is like the original RB.

They're both worth owning IMO.

I really fancy getting a copy of Andro Dunos, its a pretty spartan shooter, but I've played a bit on my cab recently on a multi cart and thought about getting the home cart.

... Yet again a game that was $100 a few years ago is $350-ish.

Ah well, at least I have pretty much all the home carts I wanted.

i have more money than grey matter and I'm seriously considering getting a neo geo cd

I'm wondering though: If I get a JP system and I'm in Canada, do I need to get a step-down converter? I checked but nobody really seems to agree if the minimal difference in voltage standards can damage the system in the long run or not.

Wow, I was just browsing this thread and realized that my AES collection was worth a bit of money it seems :D

Since the prices are increasing a lot these days, and I guess it won't change in the near future, any idea what I should check to have a good idea on the prices? My collection includes Blazing Star JP, Pulstar JP, MOTW JP, MS 3 and 5 JP, SVC Chaos JP, Last Blade 2 JP, etc...

Five bucks a piece.

There's a very awesome video (in French) about the development of Metal Slug ( the same guys made on before about the development of In The Hunt and Gunfroce 2, which is also full of juicy bits since they managed to contact the original Nazca/Irem eployees). Beside one web page (http://gaminghell.co.uk/NazcaStaff.html ) , I don't think any details from it have leaked out on the Ebglish web, which is a shame because it's an insanely detailled look at the unknown first version of Metal Slug. The cliffs notes are:

-The entire game was played with the Metal Slug. There was no pedestrian gameplay and Marco and Tarma did not exist at this point.

-The tone was more somber and lacked any humour, being more in line with the team's work on In the Hunt.

-The backgrounds were redrawn. For example, the entire first stage, and not just the second half, was set inside a swamp.

-The game was much shorter: Stage 2 did not have an equivalent in the original version (Metal Slug Zero was supposed to have 6 levels like the final one, but the Kobe earthquake prevented one of the designer from coming over), and levels were shorter and simpler (for example, level 3 did not have the climbing portion or a mid-boss battle). The game was lengthened at SNK's instance, their reasoning being that since the Neo Geo was also sold as an home system, the game should be of reasonable length.

-The original plot was that General Morden had spent years planning a coup and managed to conquer all of the world’s major cities in his opening salvo. The original player character, Phil John, was an engineer for the Regular Army who was working on the Metal Slug prototype, and took it with him to join the resistance. Player 2 was a gold Metal Slug piloted by one named Michiko Nakajima

-The bearded POWs originally were blue pallete swaps of the enemy soldiers. Furthermore, instead of giving items, rescued PO Ws would either climb to the top of the Metal Slug and fire their bazooka, or stay next to it and throw grenades.

-The prototype was completed and demo'ed at SNK's Osaka location 1995, The video ends with the two guys teasing they may have found a lead on a prototype cartridge, but that "it's a bit tenuous" and that "it won't be until a long time". (So who's game for hunting the legendary Metal Slug prototype)?

The video also reveals that rearranged themes from Metal Slug 1 were composed for X and are still present in the ROM, that an "X" version of Metal Slug 3 was planned, and that the antagonists of Metal Slug 4 would have been fish-people (as hinted in the ending of Metal Slug 3).

It also has screenshots and the original scrapped background art for this version of the game. I'll screencap them if there's any interest.

Would be amazing if someone could somehow port Gunforce 2 to Neo Geo...or even Dreamcast for that matter. Im surprised Metal Slug proto roms havent surfaced as well.

Other random tidbits:

-The developers took the dev kits they used with Irem when it closed. They disliked SNK's dev tools and quickly set up "a more modern rig".
-Nazca was set up to port SNK's games to he Saturn and Playstation. They inisted to be able to make an original arcade game. SNK allowed them to make it on their off-timeé
-The developers categorically deny the popular rumour Irem employees went to work to Acom (the Viewpoint/Pulstar guys). Infact, they hated Pulstar and saw it as an insult to their work, because they interpreted it as "taking advantage of Irem's death"
-They also deny Dolphin Blue was intented as a spiritual successor to MS' saying "only two MS developers worked on it" and that it was "a complete coincidence".
-The random UFOs in Stage 3 and Stage 6 were random details the main graphic artist added because he thought "it was neat" and they were not setting up for the sequels, as some thought.
-SNK didn't have faith in the game and didn't produce a lot of home cartridges as a result. The success of the game was a surprise for everyone involved.

Now, for the images:

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I know I keep bringing it up and never act on it, but... am I crazy for wanting to start collecting Neo Geo CD games? I mean, I'm not trying to get a complete collection or anything, but getting the CD versions of the games I like. Cuz if you play them through an emulator, the load times are removed, and the CD soundtracks are just so damn good.

I'm not crazy, right? RIGHT?

if you want that sweet scotlland course and arranged soundtracks, those are as good reasons as any

i got two neo geo cd games without owning a neo geo cd yet so I'm probably crazier than you

This thread is amazing. I don't own a Neo Geo of any kind :( but I'm strongly considering throwing my monies at the Neo Geo X Gold, it's practically a childhood obsession and dream to own one. I mean back in the day it was the Ferrari or Lamborghini of consoles and I was driving my trusty Volkswagen SNES (though nothing wrong with that lol) and my childhood opinion was that only the chosen few, the elite could ever own one lol. (None of my friends had one either.)
Subbed for future updates and hopeful purchase ;)

But.... Why???

I'll let these two videos do the talking. There was a firmware update (which wasn't distributed for free and could only be acquired by buying a game pack), but it didn't fix many of the issues with the system

If you just want to play Neo Geo games on a portable, a PSP or all those emulation boxes like the Dingoo (which the Neo Geo X is essentially a rebranded version of) are cheaper and just as good ways to do it. If you want to "support SNK", well, they broke their contract with the manufacturer because of how sub-par the system is and went to court, so they probably ain't getting your money. If you think the USB arcade stick looks neat, you can get it separately. The Neo Geo X by itself has nothing goign for it over other methods to play NG games.

Oh man, crushing blow right there. So the USB arcade stick works on PC, any issues??
