Yo-kai Watch has lost its momentum? Wow! This must be some new record for Level-5.

What is next for Level-5 if YW flops? Do they even have a new franchise ready before that happen?

Even if the series declines it will still be putting up higher numbers than most other things.

Level 5 have new franchises coming in addition to revivals of both Inazuma Eleven and Layton.

Snack World and this new IP they're teasing for Level-5 Vision 2016 it seems.

So, looks like the YW fanbase is going to face lots of mockery now. Sigh. :(

It doesn't have to be like this.

I still believe YW 3 is not going to flop badly here. Maybe underperformed a bit is probably the worst thing it can happen here.

YW is still one of the biggest thing right now in Japan. For it to flop is something i can't picture happening.

Don't worry guys, Spain will save Yokai Watch. :p

/half joking

Is that you Sammy.^_^

Level 5 is astoundingly bad at long term brand management.

I don't think YW series is the problem of brand management here though. It just feel that maybe the fans enthusiasm for YW is decreasing? Why i said this here is because i don't see Busters and Sangokushi over exposing the IP here. It is just a small spin-off.
This is probably going to be the same as MH where it reached its peak on PSP and the stabilize its sales on 3DS numbers. Maybe YW 3 will show us its potential sales number when it is not the current hot product anymore.

Really? I think Level 5 is insanely good at promoting their games that they get higher sales numbers than they desearve. I think YW is a mediocre series shoved into everyone 's throat by the multi-media promotion, and they are smart enough to pump out as many game as possible before the fever ends.

This doesn't really mean much but I've seen The Last Guardian performing very well on Amazon.jp's video game Best Sellers, moving around the top 5 since the release date was announced (and preorders opened).

Pretty sure it's been moving there longer than FFXV or Persona 5 did, though as I said doesn't mean much, for one we haven't seen the same enthusiasm on the comgnet preorder chart.

The game should stil sell well, more than 200k, not necessarily this year though.

They are very good at making new brands that usually exceed expectations early on to the degree that they rush out the sequels, saturate their market, and kill the property. Their only big franchise to not suffer this fate is arguably Layton, which while it had almost a yearly sequel cycle it ended in a more natural way and could possibly be revived with the right game.

Nothing is wrong with the YW marketing IMO, there's lots of things Yo-kai Watch happening right now especially with the anime in Japan for it to not lose momentum with fans quickly.

Layton's sales dropped off hard way before the 6th game.

While I don't really think there are any problems with the marketing for the series, the anime is in decline as well.

Layton's sales dropped off hard way before the 6th game.

Right but it was a more natural decline where other Level 5 franchises usually have a period between game 2-4 where they release 3 games and a special edition or two in about 24 months of the same franchise and kill it.

Without the anime this would have happened to Yokai Watch right now. Instead it'll do okay for a few more tries.

I'd argue that there follow up sequels after the first surprise hit is usually the smarter decision. Their problem is multiple releases a year. Layton may have ended more gracefully but the franchise was tanking long before it ended. The series should've taken a break after the first trilogy. They didn't let Layton go until they had Inazuma 11 and then they milked that cow dry. I don't understand why they don't try to manage multiple ips instead of rapid fire releasing titles in the same franchise until they tank it. It doesn't help when they do little to shake things up between each release.

Rakuten Books Ranking Week 24, 2016 (Jun 13 - Jun 19)

* Note: Games on the Rakuten Books Rankings are only based on sales at Rakuten Books and does not count games sold by other retailers at Rakuten.
** Note 2: Games on the Pre-Orders Ranking are counted as net sales, so it might possibly affect the games listed on the Sales Ranking.

...why did FFXV jump that much in pre-orders? Did E3 really do that much? lol

Not really. I would say it's more that there is nothing more to pre-order aside from the next week's releases, and if you see last week's pre-orders you will notice that the highest positions went for this week's releases so the next game on the list once those games were released, got the first place, in this case, FFXV.

Hoping that both games perform well, being Vita exclusives and all.

It's a strange mix now the other trackers have come in. Tsutaya seemed to like Caligula but not Coven; and Rakuten was indifferent to both.

I guess that means them doing okay but not as well as I was expecting based on COMG :(

Since always Comg has been Sony biased and Rakuten Nintendo biased. Being Tsutaya more in the middle, but sometimes is Sony biased as well.
That's why usually Tsutaya is the most precise of the three chains.

Wonder if the games here include digital cards.

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/software/ranking.html

Should be something like this

Animal Crossing>600k>Pokemon>Monster Hunter 4>520k>Monter Hunter Generations>510k>Battle Cats=400k

Also, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS should be above 260k putting all the top 10 above a quarter million.

Monster Hunter digital sales are pretty impressive all games on 3DS have likely sold about as much as all versions of Minecraft combined

Animal Crossing: New Leaf also has the highest known digital sales on a single platform.

So Japan finally dumped PS3? I can't find Persona 5 and ToB for PS3 on the chart. About time! I remember when they first revealed PS3 back in 2006 and said it would be supported for ten years. I thought it was just PR bullshit, but here we are, getting brand new PS3 releases in 2016 (2017 in the west).

Can you guys stop say "west" as all west is the same?

It was 2007 in Europe, and 2006 in USA / JP.

That same preorder chart has the PS3 version of Moon Dwellers well above the PS4 version, so no, it hasn't been dumped. The PS3 will continue to decline of course, but I'd expect PS3 versions to remain a regular thing through next year, especially for anime games.

Well, although I totally agree with you, this example doesn't apply at all. Usually Rakuten agrees with YSO positions, and I expected the PS4 version being above, since it was tracking ahead on previous weeks. If you see the chart you can see a "04./00." what means that the game didn't really jump from a lower position, but it's more that wasn't able to be pre-ordered the previous week, and this week became available again.

Something interesting to the PS3 point, though, is that there has been many games where PS3 and PSV versions have been having better holds that their PS4 counterparts. That happened with Attack on Titan, Kamen Rider, Jikkyou Powerful, now with DQ Heroes II, Builders also hold better on PS3 than on PS4. So, I expect Moon Dwellers PS4 selling more than the PS3, but the latter having better legs (if they could have, something I doubt)

According to Famitsu, Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster has sold over 638k across PS3, Vita and PS4.

Nippon Ichi Software has apologized for Labyrinth stock shortages.

Atelier Firis is due out on September 29th on Vita and PS4.

Berserk Musou for PS3 will apparently be a digital-only release on the platform.

In minor game announcement news, Artdink announced Neo Atlas 1469 for Vita, while Furyu has confirmed a Beyblade Burst game for 3DS.

Persona 5 is really lacking any day to day consistency outside of weekends, at this rate it will also fall behind its predecessor on COMG. The initial SE surge and multiple-SKUs are bolstering the numbers but it keeps flatlining for days at a time.

And FFXV just got slaughtered by FFXIII, and soon we're going to have to start looking FFXIII-2 for comparisons.

Didn't someone say that Comg closed one of their stores?

Also, as for Yo-kai Watch, the fever (not the series) is over so people are probably not expecting it to be sold out at launch.

Yes, they've gotten smaller and less and less comparable to the older data sets.

Everything just points to the fact that Japan console market is dying. I thought FFXV could make a million first week. Now more likely 700k. And I have to lower my 500k first week prediction for P5 too. Also ToB..... The Last Guardian doesn't look so hot either, you would think it can top the chart after the release date got announced.

I'd be shocked if Persona 5 didn't outsell 4.

Any guesses on how this will do across PS3/PS4? Is the franchise big in Japan?

If the PS3 version really is PSN-only, I wouldn't expect much there. I imagine most customers will either not buy the game, or grab a copy on Vita/PS4.

As for sales, I dunno. There hasn't been a Berserk game in ages and crossover Musous tend to feed on that. However, previous Berserk games weren't huge (50-80k) and I think the release date is a bad one.

I have a hard time imagining the YW series dying in Japan with its charm. As long as they go the 3-4 year generation route like with Pokemon, the YW series should be doing fine.

YW3 was a great time to stop the series and take a break.

Yokai Watch is so dead that the newest spin-off game just crossed the 500k mark.

But whatever, let's ignore the actual charts!

Some time ago Chris replied to me that FF comparison should be made from June 30 cause FF13 preorders started 3 months after launch, so why you already dooming FF15?

Second, with such a small userbase how much you think FF15 can sell? 2mln? lol

TBH, I didn't think that the medieval theme for YW would attract lots of people anyway. The main games are what matter IMO.

I think he's saying that the spinoff is ridiculously successful given that the collab it was. It sold a good bit more than Pokemon Conquest already too.
