The (Comprehensive) Scalebound Breakdown

OP stands by his statement.

I'd say with the way MS has been heading, there's a good chance it will see a release on PC. All I hope is that it has crossplay, the more gaffers in the OT riding dragons together, the better.

It was delayed aswell just like QB, wouldn't surprise me if it was so they could put out a PC version at launch aswell. And more polish of course, but mainly for a PC version.

Yeah, that's a big reason I believe they delayed, a W10 port with crossplay is just too great an idea to pass up on.

And I certainly hope it will be released for the Scorpio.

Personally I'm hoping its a launch title for it.

A Kamiya game deserves the widest audience possible

EDIT: or the widest audience Microsoft is willing to work with

Character action games renamed to Extreme action games?

Might as well call them stylish action games instead.

Anything instead character action.

In the ign interview there are also new info about the dragons. There are going to be different kind of dragons: tank dragon, wyvern dragon (the yellow one in the E3 demo), and more.

Yeah I'm working on a new expanded dragon section with this information in it, but I want to wait until we have direct footage. Hopefully gamescom.

Yeah, I would have liked it if they kept the original female protagonist and just aged her up a bit. Drew suffers from "played out trope" syndrome.

I dunno i kinda like how he's just rocking out while killing monsters, its so ridiculous but in a good way.

It's not gonna stop me from playing the game or anything, but Drew's just too much like Nero from DMC4 for me. Depending on the costumes you can choose, at least I can make him dress a bit better. (look at the picture above with the second drew to see some customization features)

So, one of the things a lot of people have been asking for in terms of gameplay footage was a look at some of the deeper RPG aspects, such as the open world and NPC's. Well earlier today I was looking at some of the various videos of the game on youtube, and I came across this small trailer for the game on a random youtube channel with about 300 views. At first i figured it was nothing more than some random footage from the Gamescom demonstration, but the Japanese translation at the bottom and opening credits, as well as the terrible quality lead me to believe it might be off-screen footage from the Xbox Tokyo fanfest that happened back in September of last year.

Anyway, I made a gif of the related footage to show, hopefully it does a bit to show off the scale of the game:

Hideki Kamiya was recently interviewed by Metro about Scalebound, and while most of the information from the interview was previously known info on the game, the interviewer did decide to ask about the not so positive reception to Drew, the protagonist of the game:

GC: I’ve been looking around online to try and gauge what the reputation of the game is, and I don’t think it’ll surprise you that the word ‘douchebag’ came up quite a lot in regards to the main character.

All: [laughs]

HK: We really haven’t talked about the story or really explained the character too much, so people are jumping to conclusions that may be unfounded. And that’s fine, but more than that I don’t make things in games to have people not hate them.

I make things in games that I really like, that are kind of strong things that I want to play and I want to experience, and I’m not really concerned about making it so everybody loves it. I’m concerned about making the things that I feel are true to my vision, because that’s really what interests me about making games.

GC: And that’s why I like Platinum Games.

HK: [laughs] So, thinking back to Bayonetta. People said lots of things about her when she came out, and if I’d just gone and wholesale changed the way that I made video games I’d probably never arrive at anything I liked.

GC: No, absolutely.

JPK: I think that reaction… I understand where it’s coming from, and it’s part of the limited information, but some of it doesn’t resonate with me. Because a lot of the people who are posting those things, like: ‘Oh, I don’t like the headphones’. They’re dudes that walk around with headphones on all day. If you go out and look at the people that are walking around they’ve all got headphones around their ears. It’s a little weird.

While I myself have been plenty vocal about Drew, I cannot disagree with standing behind the product you want to make, especially as an inspiring artist. Hopefully fans of the game will see some footage that has yet to be revealed that warms them up to Drew, but its looking like an uphill battle.

Microsoft chose a really bad way to demo this game at E3... The game is probably going to end up as a very high quality, expansive, open world JRPG with dragons. They should've showed 2 minutes of footage looking like your GIF.

Agree. I think it was just a bad showing. I think it looks like it could definitely come together.

Thanks for sharing this.

It's pretty much the response I expected, given how Kamiya has been recorded having to deal with this type of thing as early as Viewtiful Joe. So in that respect, I can certainly respect his stance.

That said, the fact that we still haven't seen much else of the character by this point doesn't help much. Come what may, I felt like we got to know and adequately make up our minds about Joe, Bayo and the main Wonderful cast in a largely flattering manner by this point in the pre-release cycle of a Kamiya release.

I'm beginning to get some Neverending Story vibes with the fish out of water protag being in a distant mythical world and creating a friendship with a giant creature whilst some epic turmoil hits

Not a problem, glad you enjoyed the read. The only thing I can hope at this point is that Drew only starts the game as we know him and will gradually progress as a person the further and further in the game you get. I don't mind some good old fashioned character development.

Just need a theme song that's half as catchy

I think Drew will turn out fine, while I've personally always been fine with Drew I can't imagine the response to Dante was all that well received and at least personality wise on the surface, they seem to draw comparisons.

Good call, and I think that kind of setup will lend itself well to the open world/exploration aspect of the game; as an environmental art nut I am hoping for a nice variety of distinct and cool locales, the game's setup gives Kamiya and gang a lot of room to play around with.

Obligatory:

It's concept art of course but I get the feeling it's going to be a blast traveling through this massive world, whether alone or with friends.

Everytime I see this game I say meh even though I know it's mechanically deep, with scope, and AAA production values (that with some tweaks in direction could of made a great game out it - the what ifs)...but alas...

The protag is a try hard hipster....the dragon design is ugly and the color palette is somehow off putting. The dialog is a joke too. Nit picky or not - those things are a major turn off.

Then you look at the combat and you can see Platinum struggle to pace the combat. They've clearly made a concerted effort to slow the combat, but it seems weightless. So my take from it is that the team is having a hard time trying to find the right balance instead of leaning heavily into the hack-n-slash fest they're known for - which is as fast-paced and weightless as it comes. If you slow the combat, you gotta add weight (the feedback feel of sorts for every action performed.) In fast paced hack-n-slash it's all about the visual cues from the animations and FX.

Changes to direction won't happen so hopefully it builds a niche audience that supports it - like say, Driveclub.

I just think they need about 40 minutes of unedited gameplay. Show off how quests work, some of the npcs and cities, followed by the wild open world, regular combat, and ending with a dungeon crawl.

Also, putting someone on the controller who's gonna demo some style and higher level gameplay couldn't hurt.

Also, many really great japanese games are not these creamy, homogeneous escalator rides front to back like a big western game. They can have peaks and valleys including really rough sections or activities. Sometimes even deliberate tedium/frustration to work up to a sense of accomplishment. Sometimes just bad ideas mixed in with good ideas.

Like maybe the boss fight they showed really does suck because they tried some ideas that din't work out but stuck with it, while another section of the game pays off using the same approach. In western games, I get the sense that all the rough patches get focus-grouped out, and maybe some good, unique stuff hits the cutting room floor thanks to the same process.

Agreed on all points.

Worth pointing out though, the E3 demo with the boss your referring to was not representative of the boss fight that will end up in the actual game.

Apparently the demo boss is lacking special attacks as well as having had greatly reduced health. Plus the editing team behind that video doing their hardest work to make the gameplay seem so dull compared to the original gameplay demo. Didn't even use the dragon rope.

So I'm hoping its a bit of what you said combined with the boss being handicapped and the player not being all that exciting that made the demo so lackluster.

So this game is a legit Action JRPG?

Wow.

I totally agree with you. Though I would love a little more than 2 minutes of footage. :p

I need screens of the cities/villages, or environments in general. They're showing too many more of the same screens so far.

Also, that little trailer above looks amazing. Why couldn't they release that for E3 instead?

I'm speculating the gameplay they showed off at E3 was made with the newer Xbox initiatives in mind, similar to Forza Horizon 3. Not an excuse for not showing stuff ike that off though.

So this game is a legit Action JRPG?

Wow.

It really is.

Game looks cool wish I had an xb1 but I do wish you could customize the character if I do get a system to play this game I know that design would get on my nerves

P+ is good at fast pacing action games... this game isn't one of them and lacks the most important... spirit.
Even they have begining to struggle in their own genere with TMNT... so an RPG doesn't suit them and make them any favor... I just hope for them to rise and shine again with NieR Automata

Are we unanimously Against the main character?
it's not that I'm against him, it's just that if he was a real person in the real world, he would be one of those people I would try to avoid because of his attitude.

This game still has me hyped even after the not-so-great-show at E3 though, the world and co op has me very, very interested.

I don't see signs of this going bad quite yet and even if it is divisive (love or hate reviews), I think all of us have some divisive games very dear to us. There's a meh main character and poor demonstration against it but everything else we have here looks good.

Nier Automata will be a devastatingly amazing and put all videogames ever to shame so it doesn't count.

I'm getting that, too. What's the one thing you would change to reduce the douchebag impression?

I think a sweet duster?
