Resident Evil 7 demo downloaded over 2 million times, tease about the finger

The information was put out to RE Ambassadors, with a actual press release to be coming later. Pretty impressive for a demo that is also locked behind PS+.

The email also included this.

For the RE7 detective thread, the current ideas are that the calendar is showing TGS and that a second demo will hit at that time. So it does seem like the finger was left in to drive people crazy, since they have said the demo won't be updated.

Wait. Are they saying they are time releasing puzzles? That's weird. It doesn't encourage trial and error, it seems like you'd just be better waiting for new things to unlock.

Capcom are the best for not clarifying that there is nothing to find the demo while everyone was going insane over it.

To be fair, it was in their best interest to not say shit. As soon as you say "there's nothing else to find," the discussion about things in the demo would die down considerably. So they just sat on their hands and let people do viral marketing for them.

Shame that there really was nothing else in this first demo, and the finger was just there to tease.

Yeah, so pretty much there is going to be an update or a second demo. Glad to see Capcom finally speak out on this, even though it's still barely anything.

I really wish the demo had had a solvable mystery. You pick up that axe and really feel like you're onto something and it's about to get real. Then there is nothing. There is no more puzzle, just dangling threads. As a result, people spent weeks overexposing themselves to the environment and scrutinizing all of its details. The early allure of horror was dismantled because people removed themselves so far from the original level of engagement that it because totally demystified.

I was really into the demo when I first started. I was also really scared. I liked the progression and how the mystery was framed and I thought this was going to be something great. But it ends so quickly. I had to spend so much time accomplishing nothing that the shine really came off the apple and I wasn't scared anymore.

Like turning the lights on in a haunted house.

It's no PT, that's for sure. But I have hopes the actual game will see these concepts through. I just really wish Beginning Hour had a conclusion. Right now, it's just dangling threads that leave me really unsatisfied.

I can't pretend that it wasn't an effective hook to get me into RE7, though. I'm sold.

Seems obvious to me that the finger is useless in the demo but might unlock something in the actual game provided that you can find it there. The shack in the demo is clearly located in the backyard of the in-game mansion, so it's possible you can go back at some point.

As for the axe, it's probably just a cute little secret for players to tease that there is combat in the full game.

Edit: Ah, didn't notice the calender. Update or demo #2 at TGS, then.

Capcom never officially said this. It was all "he said she said" with reps at demo booths, people running social media accounts, and 'close friends'. So nope, they didn't go back on their word at all.

...but no one is angry. In fact most were having a blast with the finger stuff, and running around doing crazy things, and breaking the demo. One of the best community experiences in neogaf for me. :D

Yep I know :) I meant if someone may feel agry, didn't imply that some people felt that way, atleast here on GAF.

It seems like Capcom wanted people to go crazy finding secrets like PT, but they didn't want them to find it too quickly...so they didn't include the secrets.
That's kind of lame

Is the demo a permanent PS4 exclusive?

Because if it isn't and it's an ARG or intended to be 'solved' by community efforts, it would make sense to put in a roadblock of some sort to be removed when other platforms gain access.

They should have been more explicit the finger does nothing. After reading the demo thread, there are people who are just going to think this is a clue.

Maybe they had no intention of doing anything with the finger and then saw all the uproar and decided, "hey let's do something with that."

It would have been downloaded a lot more if it weren't behind the PS Plus paywall.

What would be the motivation for Capcom to hide it behind Plus? Reduced bandwidth costs or something?
