Shigeru Miyamoto thinks Star Fox is the most underrated Wii U game

Miyamoto Names His Most Underrated Wii U Game

The Wii U isn’t Nintendo’s most popular console, but it has quietly amassed a decent collection of games that include hits like Super Mario Maker, Splatoon, and Bayonetta 2. However, there are a few Wii U titles that didn’t get a whole lot of attention. So which Wii U game does legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto think you should give a second look?

During an interview at E3, we were able to interview the Nintendo luminary. During the conversation we asked Mr. Miyamoto which Wii U game he thinks has been overlooked. “I think personally Star Fox is a really fun game if you sit down and play it. I think, for example, an elementary school kid who plays it without any preconceived notions, I think it would be really fun for them. I think it’s also really, really fun for siblings to play it together."

Senior product marketing manager of Nintendo of America Bill Trinen also jumped into the conversation to add his two cents. “Personally, I think Pikmin 3 is the most amazing game on Wii U. It’s probably one of my favorite games in the last six or seven years. I think that hardly anyone realizes that the multiplayer bingo battle mode was literally the best new multiplayer mode that has been created since Smash Bros. It is so much fun.”

In response to this Miyamoto added, “Pikmin is the kind of game that you have to play maybe three times to get the full effect, but you know, people don’t have a lot of time, so they just clear the stage and just move on. Games are becoming more of a consumable product, and it’s getting harder and harder for people to let a game to sink in and enjoy leisurely.”

Any game can be fun if you don't have any preconceived notion that good games also exist.

Bingo Battle is indeed the best multiplayer. My wife who had never really played a game before, with the exception of DDR at an arcade, fell in love with bingo battle one she understood it.

He's right about People having not enough time to sink playing. Some unic experience can be had by giving the chance to try and be patient.

Nah i still think that Pikmin is the most Underrated game.
Not in reviewscores, but by gamers. They are to afraid to play with kiddy onions that don't pew-pew.

I liked old Star Fox because it was pick up and play.
Star Fox Zero is pick up and WTF

It's not hard, things mostly work... but with games like that I need for the emphasis to be on the package than on a gimmick. The controls need to be a no questions asked affair and switching back and forth between TV/game pad for me breaks up the action too much.

I liked it when I first started playing, it felt good, but I found myself not really feeling it like I did the previous ones, as all the glory was squarely focused on the new gameplay style rather than the actual level design/scenario/etc. It also felt too much of a lift from SF64; it was basically playing that one but with the control gimmick.

It's not a bad game, but after waiting for so long for a new one, it didn't really pan out for me and felt like mostly a lazy rehash but with the gamepad gimmick to attempt to differentiate it and there were points of legitimate frustrations, especially the final boss, which is one of the worst things out there.

Oh Jesus... this preconceived notions thing is going to be quoted until the end of time now.

My preconceived notions about other people's preconceived notions about Miyamoto's use of preconceived notions regarding gaming are now being preconceived. ;-)

There are several Wii U titles that deserve that more than Star Fox.

It's just that Star Fox is the game that Miyamoto directly worked on.

If anything The Wonderful 101 should be it. It has a very small group of people who love it and no one else seems to care about the game if they even know about its existence...

Similar to Zelda: Twilight Princess after Wind Waker, I think people really did just want a rehash after the missteps of Star Fox Adventures, Assault, and Command. Not sure about "lazy" though.

The biggest issue is, people only wanted that. They didn't want Miyamoto's experimental pet project, even if that form is the only one that could justify the game's existence.

A) No, that would probably be wonderful 101.

B) If the game only seems good because you haven't played prior games in the series or genre, it's probably not a good sign.

I still need to unwrap my copy of course, so I haven't my own opinion yet.

I think it's pretty interesting how Miyamoto's POV has switched from fully embracing the Blue Ocean in the Wii Years to becoming increasingly passive-agressive about "casual gamers" and complaining dem casuals can'T appreciate complex games, lol

Well, it is a fun game, no argument there from me.

But underrated? no. That 'honor' goes to other games in the WiiU library like the Wonderful 101 and Project Zero imo..

That statement doesn't really have much credence coming from him due to his own involvement with the game.

That being said, I 100% agree with SFZ being the most underrated WiiU game, unless the public perception of it has made a 180 degree turn since the launch. I just got the game last week with very mild expectations, and I think it's great.

Not saying that there aren't other WiiU games that deserve to be more widely appreciated; The Wonderful 101 is definitely one game that does. It's just that the reception to SFZ was way more negative compared to how the others were received.

By lazy I mean I didn't think it was terribly original; the locales were pretty cut and paste and the actual game design was a far cry from Nintendo's usual IMO. It's not a badly put together game and the controls do mostly work. I guess just for me there wasn't really that spark of creativity beyond the controls.

As far as the Zelda comparison, I can't really agree-- people didn't want the same exact thing again just because of those spinoffs, people didn't like the spinoffs because they weren't very good. People wanted a new proper Star Fox game centered on arwing combat, that doesn't mean they wanted to play what is essentially SF64 with new controls.

Like I said, I don't even really dislike SFZ. But it's clear where the problems are, both in terms of the "preconceived notions," the marketing, and the game itself. I think enough people that actually played the game enjoyed it, even if just somewhat.

Star Fox Zero reminds me of Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii, when they mapped the gound pounding move to waggle instead of a button just because, and didn't allow users to remap it.

People just want an extension of SF64. That's not a bad thing; SF64 was a short arcade game so there's room for sequels to expand on the formula without having to reinvent the wheel, a la the first few Megaman 1-4.

I haven't had the chance to play SF0 yet since I don't have a Wii U; I'd like to try it, but at the same time it would be nice for them to have just made a Star Fox game that was unconditionally in the vein of the original two games.

Conversely, they could do with a little more innovation in some of those Mario games. Making Mario meow like a cat really doesn't make the franchise fresh.

I actually agree with him in some ways.

The game is mostly bashed for its unconventional control scheme, but I found it to work pretty well once I got used to it. I actually prefer the controls to the series' traditional way - it allowed me to do things I couldn't before (I can also guide my shots without usually needing to look at the gamepad, now).

But only with the Arwing! The other vehicles do not handle well, and it's not because of the motion controls. And since such a large chunk of the game is with them, the quality game content is pretty diluted (and already sparse to begin with).

Still, the on-rails Arwing levels are topnotch, my favorite in the series (there's just so few of them). The dogfights are good fun too, and better than they ever were.

The other bosses are more hit or miss. The bonus content is also relatively disappointing (there is some good stuff, but just so little).

When it's great, it's so great. The best of Star Fox, even. The only problem is that so much of the game is just ok/good-ish. The motion controls are the barrier of of entry for most people, but they actually function pretty well if you're willing to try it out (but not for everyone, I understand). They're the least of this flawed game's problems as far as I'm concerned.

You know if another dev said this about their game with mixed reception, it would probably be relentlessly and unequivocally mocked.

But because it's Miyamoto, some people will swallow this nonsense right up and then parrot it in other threads until the end of time.

Yay.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
You heard it here first folks, Star Fox Zero is a good game if you've never played another game before and are 6 years old.
