Nintendo is doubling down on smart phone development, it's now actively hiring [additional] programmers for their Kyoto office and Tokyo office exclusively for smartphone development. It seems like the company wants to expand its smartphone portfolio without compromising the resources allocated to dedicated game development.

So right now, with the NX coming in less than a year, it's more important for Nintendo to have more mobile devs than console/portable devs. Bad news for NX. Wouldn't weird me if Nintendo changes their main business to mobile in 10 years or so.

How do you even get this from these news?

Makes sense. They need to get their IP in as many hands as possible and one of the ways they plan on doing it is through their mobile (cell) games. They need to keep content coming frequently to keep gamers attention. More developers with experience in mobile gaming makes sense.

This makes sense and really should help ensure NX has even more resources available. Instead of pulling resources from NX game development they are looking to expand.

They are thinking long term by utilizing mobile gaming to get their IP in the hands of more people, along with other ventures. I think it's a good plan.

So is this gonna increase their output by adding to staff or are they just replacing developers that were siphoned from other groups?

I hope this isn't for the mobile games coming out this year, cuz it seems like those should of been in full development swing by now.

Unless they need a bit more manpower to finish them up or sommit.

It's to increase the overall resources dedicated to smartphone development. Full time positions and for both offices, so this isn't just to finish a mobile game.

Well, these days there's more mobile developers than console developers in Japan, so it's a good time to poach some staff that's both skilled in this kind of development as well as free up the old timers who still understand consoles so they can work on them.

Can't tell if your trolling or just stupid.

This actually good news really for normal development. Hiring people specifically for mobile development etc. means they are not just relying on the traditional move people around as needed. Not saying that will stop but having dedicated staff certainly helps

Great way to experiment some new ips and when if something hit big, then make it for your dedicated platform nx.

This seems like a great thing. It means they're building up staff specifically for making mobile games instead of relying on already existing staff. I also hope this is a sign that we will see a lot of effort put into their mobile games.

Getting that mobile talent while you can is smart. This should boost their output of mobile software.

Damn, bummer I couldn't do the job remotely. I'm an iOS developer, but relocating to Japan isn't in the cards.

I want to see more mobile interaction with Nintendo's NX soon! They need to advertise their console games on their mobile devices.

Half the Japanese developer base seems smartphone oriented nowadays.

I hope their mobile games doesn't require super high end specs... I remember miitomo eating a lot of storage space at least.

I'd scratch my head to this but then if I started I might hit bone.

New staffs is always better, especially for Nintendo.
They can't just use the same console devs team for mobile, or they'll run into the same problem of making game for console and handheld not fast enough.
