Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Steps to fix shit

1) They need to take the servers all the way down.

2) Spin up more server instances

3) Create a login queue

4) Give hourly status updates on Twitter/FB
Nah going silent and hoping the demand dies down so you don't have to do extra work makes much more sense. /s

I think combining Pokemon with a free mobile app was expected to be huge. It's an insanely popular franchise.

Even so it appears to be more popular than expected. It seems this game is also getting popular even among people who don't typically play games, if going by multiple accounts in this thread.

I installed the game, it keeps freezing after the shamefully limited character customize. I hit the check, the UI disappears, nothing happens. Closed it, reopened, same deal at the same spot. Bout to delete this.

I have been quite surprised by all the situations people keep talking about, where they meet multiple people during short spans of time, playing the game near them. Didn't expect something like that would happen. Closest I've seen is seeing 2 guys playing Ingress when taking the elevator, but then again they two where quite dorky programmers at the same game company I work for.
Dude there's like 100 people wandering around aimlessly like NPCs in a Pokémon game in a Sydney park at 10pm playing this game.

Few questions

1. Since this app basically uses your GPS, does this mean it basically it use A LOT of your monthly data?

2. Does this app run in the background AT ALL? Do i need to worry about this app eating away at my monthly data if it isn't open?

I guess my main concern is, this app is essentially useless without using your network data via GPS signal, coz you cant go around with wifi as thats not possible.

Probably not that it would far and away be the most successful app launch of all time. What kind of question is this?

an absolutely legitimate one when you consider the franchise in question.

people are aloud to be angry, you don't have to forum police everyone who speaks negatively about the game. it can be cathartic for a lot of folks.

It doesn't use too much data (a few MB per hour), and does not run in the background.

It's a ridiculous question. They obviously knew it would be a huge server load, just not this big. We're all surprised in this thread how big it is, as you can tell from the posts about how people were surprised to see their coworkers playing it or random people walking around. I don't care if screaming "damn you Niantic!" makes people feel better, it's still misguided and ridiculous.

1. No, GPS actually doesn't use data. The maps it downloads do, but those are tiny. Someone posted data usage earlier, I forget what it was, but it was mere mb in the whole day.

2. Nope.

1. Not really, I've been running around for 2 days with the app open constantly, and I've only used 12.4 MB. Way less data than spotify or those other music streaming apps, even.

2. It does not run in the background. minimizing/closing the app or locking your phone cuts off the pokemon go app, so it loses connection until you open it again.

When do Pokestops reset after you've collected from them?

In my experience it takes something like 3-5 minutes.

yeah i have no clue how after 20 years of Pokemon being one of the biggest franchises in history and combining that with a free mobile app wouldn't cause huge server loads.

i'm not buying the excuse they didn't see it coming. i will, however, understand if they say something like "we needed to ensure we used minimal server capacity to see exactly how much the load would be so we can be cheap af and only get the bare minimum"

"but IAP works, don't work"
To be fair, a ton of people are still getting the "nkt available in your country" on the play store. They probably did a controlled roll out to attempt to avoid the server issues, but everyone is going and sideloading the apk anyway.

reasonable feature wishlist:

- ability to mark locations on the map
- display quickest route to a selected destination
- ability to leave brief chat messages/sign posts for other trainers (or just teammates in gyms)
- ability to see if other trainers are within a certain distance of you. ( not exact location, could only be same faction trainers too)
- ability to see what moves your gym's defending pkmn have
- ability to go back to the "main menu" after being in pokemon/shop/items instead of going back to the map
- training at your factions gym should give better rewards
- edit - training at your factions gym should allow you to tuse more than 1 pkmn
- attacking a gym should allow you to bring only the amount of pokemon that are currently defending, or maybe total amount of pkmn allowed to bring could be determined by amount of CP - ie. can bring ( up to a limit?) X amount of pkmn but their CP total can't be over the total CP of the defending gym ( or maybe has to be within 50/100 CP)
- ability to drop eggs
- would like to be able to remove eggs from incuabtors, maybe you lose your progress on the egg, or the egg all together, and 1x use of the incubator
- amount of candies exchanged for transfers could vary - ex. could depend on what level of evolution they are, how much candies were used to power them up prior, or using an equation factoring all their stats, moves, size, etc.

- more to come i'm sure....

Yeah that's the stuff that blows my mind. I would love to see actual numbers of daily players and whatnot. Sounds like there would be TONS of them, even though this has only released in NZ, AU and US.

12.4mb in a couple days doesn't sound frightening. Hmm.. maybe ill keep the app for another few days to see how I go. Glad to hear it doesnt use any data when not opened unlike FB and the like when they do background downloads etc.. notifications

I'll definitely agree with putting a limit on the number of pokemon you can have attacking. I had a CP 260 Raticate defending a gym alone, and the next day he was replaced by a CP 120 pokemon. Pretty safe to say that he wasn't defeated with the other pokemon alone. Attackers have a huge advantage at the moment, it would be nice to know that the defenders stand a chance when the the pokemon have an equal CP. The devs showed that they have the ability to limit the number of pokemon (when training at a friendly gym you can only bring one pokemon), so I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility.

I seriously need to let my phone just charge, but I keep wanting to open up the app to check on the Pokestops and gyms near me and catch any Pokemon that show up, so it's been hovering around 10% battery for almost an hour now lol.

It's crazy. My girlfriend and I were playing at like 11 PM and ran into at least 15 people wandering around staring at their phones.

Saw a group of three people this morning running across busy a busy road to catch something.

Walked around a local park, the local uni campus and a bit of the city centre just now. Saw quite a few people clearly playing the game lol. Also caught a Dratini in the park and got enough candies and stardust to evolve my Zubat and Rattata. Good fun. Shame the servers are dead for me now though.

Oh my god! People at my work is walking "aimlessly" around the buildings of my workplace and also people who I never thought liked Pokemon have been asking me things about Pokemon GO and when are they going to include 2nd gen.

Hell, some friends are planning to do a car trip around the city the weekend to find some mons and gym. HELP!

Seeing two grown men hanging out at local Starbucks to catch Pokémon at lunch today makes my day

This is probably way way in the unforeseeable future, but I hope they add a battle feature where you point a camera at each other and can see each other's pokemon. Then you battle.

Does this app drain your battery a lot?

I suspect it does since
1. App is running
2. uses your GPS
3. uses your data
4. Occasional camera

All at the same time.

Well, I'm expecting company soon but there was a Venonat nearby, which was only one footprint away so I went out and caught it. I didn't have that one in the pokedex yet.

This doesn't bode well for my life, lol.
