Came into work to Pokemon Craze

I just saw this in the other Pokemon Sun/Moon thread, it's sad.

This game brings random strangers together in an organic and really fun way in the real world. The lure at Pokestops is such a great idea.

It would be kind of awesome if they ended up patching in battle capabilities against wild pokemon: that would make the game kind of perfect.

I think it would pretty simple just overlay some menu buttons with attacks and allow you to choose which Pokemon you send out to battle/weaken wild pokemon.

They need to implement friend battling ASAP. The biggest mistake I always see for these things that blow up big and fast, is that the people behind them just sit until they've lost most of the flash in the pan playerbase.

If it would have had a way to fight your friend's pokemon, right from the get-go, you add that multiplayer element in and really hook everyone trying it. As it is now, it's a great thing running around and collecting, but it needs more substance, and fast.

And I'm saying this as somebody that loves the idea, the game, and hope it continues to stay big.

You mean the thread where you came in hating on all current designs with no provocation, and then insisted on Pokémon just now being wrestlers is a terrible idea despite Machop being in there from the onset.

Litterally had no idea this game was a thing until a few days ago. Tried watching some videos to understand why people are apparently going nuts about...and I'm left very confused. It looks really boring?

Like, you walk about trying to find pokemon, you then find them and all you can do is throw a pokeball at them to capture them? Other than that there's some gyms located randomly everywhere where you can fight? But the fighting seems to consist of players frantically tapping on their screen and sometimes swipping to dodge whatever.

This game just seems really pointless? Am I missing something here? Seems like something that will get old real fast

Aren't all games, in the end, pointless?

Everyone on Android is sideloading it from apkmirror. Those with iPhones are switching their phones region and creating a US iTunes account for it.

How is sideloading even working for people?

I tried that here in Japan and outside of the first starter Pokemon nothing shows up. Everyone else here has said the same thing too.

The craze is infectious. It's all over my city. I'm running into players often which is a lot of fun

However this game will die fast if they don't add content soon

The regions that are about to have the game released probably already have their areas populated... where as regions that aren't going to be released in for awhile...

I don't know about battles against wild Pokémon. I like it in theory but even flicking a Pokeball can sometimes take too long while I'm walking with other people who are more concerned with getting to our destination than with playing.

Yeah that one, the same one some random jerk told me to stay in Pokemon Go threads because I disagree with them about the designs of the new Pokemon.

It's no wonder that guy hates Pokemon Go, he would actually have to go outside and interact with people.

I wonder how long this will last. If it will continue to be a big game or if it will be like flappy bird and last a few weeks.

I'm supposed to be at work cooking right now... instead in walking around outside in the alley ways looking for Pokemon.

Shit is addicting.

Rattata everywhere.

Edit: bosses wife just caught me as i was trying to pull a Krabby, lol.

I don't believe I have the phone OR the service for Pokemon Go. My service is shit outside of my apartment and the game keeps crashing back to the home screen every so often.

I can't be in on the craze ._.

Despite my general distaste for all forms of mobile gaming, it seems going incredibly chintzy on a phone has finally come back to bite me in the ass. There will be so many Charmanders remained uncaught now.

*fires up Pokemon X instead*

Well, okay then? What makes it fun then? Why not just play a normal 3ds pokemon game, those seem to offer much much more to do, in more interesting ways?

People like collecting things, people like going out and exploring their surroundings. It instills a sense of wonder and "what's right around the corner?" that a lot of people, as adults especially, they've kind of lost over the years.

How many times have you taken the same path to work? How many times have you been compelled to go just around the corner and see what's there? Probably not very often, but that's what this game does. It nudges you, it asks you "what's just ahead?", and it also tickles peoples nostalgia boners.

If you don't see the fun in it, that's fine. I'm not particularly a fan either... but my wife ADORES Go. She's going out and exploring our neighborhood where she might never gotten out of the car as she drove by it. We are mounting expeditions to see what's around and catching pokemon as we do so. That's the fun in it.

Seems pretty blatant to me.

Do you feel offended by the sentiment? Or is it bannable or something?

Because I don't think it's a controversial statement. Nintendo franchises could absolutely flourish on competitor hardware. Moreso than on their own platforms, in my opinion.

I hope the success of Pokémon Go shows some people what Nintendo can actually achieve when they put their content on devices people actually own, instead of expecting potential customers to buy clunky, unappealing consoles first.

Nintendo needs to do more of this.

Feels like you are feeling upset here

I mean 3DS isn't exactly clunky. Last time I saw there are around 50 million owners and Pokemon always makes bank for Nintendo.

It actually is a pretty controversial statement... Could is the operative word in your statement.

Let's take a quick look at how Nintendo is right this second:

On their OWN hardware, they are requiring outside help to meet their development needs.

On their OWN hardware, they are struggling to output enough content to fill a reasonable lineup and remain profitable, this is WITHOUT any major competition.

As of right now, the way they get the most out of their machines is that they control them. While there is certainly "nintendo magic", a lot of it is tied to their first party studios ability to know and work on their hardware and having direct access to the engineers that build said hardware. This is why Naughty Dog can produce visuals that seem so far ahead of other PS4 developers even though they all have access to the same hardware.

So yes, it is certainly controversial to assume that Nintendo will be more successful outside of their sphere of influence and control... Pokemon GO only highlights this, not detracts from it. Yes, it's definitely successful and will likely continue to be successful... but look at the cost of it. For what it is, Pokemon GO is a creative void. There is very little of the game series charm, no storyline, and the gameplay itself is super shallow.

That is the kind of experience we might get going forward for everything if Nintendo decides chasing profit is more important than standing on their own platform.

Agreed, its shocking to me that they released a Pokemon game with no ability to trade or battle friends. Its like the completely forgot about one of the cruxes of Pokemon.

The premise I get the appeal of. The current execution is the part that makes me confounded as to what makes people bother.

Yeah all my like 30 year old friends are really into it. I just don't have the nostalgia for it. in the 90's I was playing golden eye and Diablo, didn't care about Pokemon. I was 10 and Pokemon seems like a young kids game.

Even still POKEMON GO is just POKEMON Snap 2016.

Except Pokemon Snap is a way better game. I am really disappointed by Pokemon Go considering what it could have been.

I saw 2 random young adults wandering my apartment complex at 11 p.m. -- turns out they were playing.

A friend's roommate got in a low-speed car accident playing it while driving. I can only hope most people don't do it and drive.

The driving issue is the exact reason I won't be playing this. It very much will be a problem I would think.

Saw so many groups of college kids running around yesterday all playing the game. It was amazing.

I just wish the game wasn't so half assed. The key art is atrocious

Yeah the thing that may hurt Go is that Nintendo is clearly worried about impacting the popularity of the actual Pokemon games, so didn't want to include most of the gameplay. The response to Go may indicate that was a big mistake and full blown Pokemon would control the world in this AR / real world version.

The question about if Nintendo should or shouldn't go third-party is far more complex than the dumb equation "XX would sell proportionally to userbase YY".

In this specific case (Pokémon) there is no incentive at all for TPC to stop release mainline Pokémon episodes on Nintendo handhelds because on average they sell about 15 million units at $40 a pop.
The business model adopted by mobile releases and the type of games more popular on mobile are so different from dedicated gaming devices that the two offerings should cooperate between them instead of replacing one for another.

If only the damn thing would connect. Every time I'm actually out and about the servers are having trouble. I was lucky yesterday and stumbled upon a Pokestop (which netted me some Pokeballs and an egg) while biking with a friend, but other than that I've only connected enough to catch a Pidgey and Weedle in my own apartment.

Uh, they are. Maybe you're not aware of Nintendo's new mobile initiative? The fact that they purchased a portion of DeNA and have multiple mobile projects releasing in the future? Including a new Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem game this fall?

If you think the success of Pokemon GO means Nintendo should just go third party, that's a pretty big leap in logic. Nintendo has a very solid strategy right now: release casual, pick-up-and-play apps for mobile, while working to improve their dedicated hardware for their "core" software. You would not be seeing Pokemon GO-levels of excitement from casual gamers if Nintendo simply started publishing software on PS4, XB1, and PC.

Another factor is its one of the main draws for buying Nintendo dedicated handhelds, which generate a significant amount of revenue through both hardware sales and third party software sales.

Man, this is so freaking cool. I love how unique this game is and how it really encourages you to explore the world.

Im watching someone on twitch right now with a camera attached to his chest as he walks around downtown baltimore fighting gyms and looking for new pokemon. He has run into several people doing the same.

I really want to go out and do this!

Yeah, I agree. I don't want to bother with that. Being able to battle friends would be sweet tho.

Me and a couple friends and family are all playing it. It's just such an awesome concept that sounds really lame when you describe it.

I guess there's a hypno named Bill Cosby out there somewhere.

It's really crazy. People talking about it at work, at the movie theater (went to watch secret life of pets), and all over Facebook. All these bars in downtown hold gathering events soon too. Really really crazy.

I was at a bar yesterday which happened to be a pokestop. There was a full two hours of lure modules and many people were clearly playing the game.

Yeah, just like Sony games flourish on their own hardware.

PS4: 40 Million Sold...Best Selling Game is Uncharted with an attach rate of 6% (2.7 Sales).

Wii U: 12 Million Sold...Best Selling Game is Mario Kart 8 with an attach rate of 59% (7.5 Million Sales).

...I think Nintendo are fine.
