I cannot wait to see what you do in that game ! Is it the first game ever released with zero information on what the actual game is about ?

You do all kinds of stuff and things!

Never been a huge fan of exploration for exploration's sake myself, so hopefully the upgrade/crafting system is robust enough to keep you busy for a while. The language system seemed real cool, as well.

Hehe Red Dwarf nod, purely in honour of the repetition until the end of time of No Mans Sky threads asking 'so what is it / what do you do' :)

Haha, for a second I thought you were mocking my apparent stupidity!

Never seen Red Dwarf. I need to check it out sometime.

Hello Games is a British studio, so it would need to be MATHS EFFECT.

p.s. Edge magazine already used that as the title of their 2014 NMS article.
p.p.s. PS UK magazine used "Hello, Worlds" as the title of their NMS article a few months ago. I prefer the comma.
(don't want to link to the scans but they're out there)

I was afraid I lost the passion for this game during the long wait, but tonight I've dreamt about playing No Man's Sky again.

it's good to be a fucking nerd.

Yeah I did like that (I'm Welsh btw) but it read better!

No Man's Sky |OT| We were exploding anyway

Just debating if I should get the PS4 version or PC.......
PS4 is the only system that has the limited edition and potential support for the only VR headset I'm planning on buying for the next few years. If the PC version happens to be way better, I'll double dip during the next major Steam sale.

That's how I decided.

Any ps4 gameplay floating around?

Ironically almost every single video of the game seems to be the PS4 version.

A even better question to ask is why hasn't the PC version been shown off?

Here's two videos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLcjvIQJns0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-uMFHoF8VA

in both videos Sean is seen using a DS4, so it's likely he's probably using a Dev-Kit PS4, so that remains to be seen if the game will have differences to the retail release version.

We'll certainly know in 29 days.

I was kinda meh about no co-op since my wife and friends love exploring together in games buuut I think I am sold and my wife seems to be interested too just with being able to call me over to show what she's found vs me etc.

So long story short PS4 copy pre-ordered, I would go with PC but I feel if any game will be ruined by idiots it will be this one like usual even though performance would no doubt be better.

Anyone knows about the review embargo? I think I read it was a couple of days prior the release but I might be confused with another game.

I don't know anything about any review embargo for this game, considering how much press information is available on the game, playable previews back in May and whatnot, generally seems like Hello Games doesn't really care about information being withheld from this game, so an embargo of sorts doesn't seem likely.

Welp, here's a quick and dirty book cover attempt, looked through some old sci-fi book covers and basically most of them have these thick, large fonts for the title, so I decided to use a font that's a bit more reminiscent of the time, instead of the original thin NMS logo font.

EDIT:
BTW, not my intention to hijack the thread or anything, was simply inspired by something More_Badass said so I wanted to try what an NMS book cover might look like, that's all. :)

Fantastic work! You should do a PS4 cover-art version. If you do, keep the frayed edges look.

You mind releasing whatever art you used to make this? Or perhaps the original PSD if that's what you used? Might be able to make a cool custom box art. If not me, then maybe someone in the custom box art thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=442713

Can we talk for a second about how cool the procedural ship generation is? I can't remember any game that's had procedurally-designed ships looking this good and this diverse.

(this was an image given to press for some articles, these were all created from NMS's proc gen system)

And those are all just variations on one ship.

Was super inspired by ichtyander's NMS book cover, that I decided to try my hand at making a comic cover! I've never tried to photoshop something together like this before! It was good fun and a lesson!

Going to try and do more as I feel I could do better with some different art!

Well fuck me sideways, this is absolutely stunning. Retro science fiction design is my favorite aesthetic in the world and this is perfect. Bravo.

Btw, is there going to be different star types in the game? Cooler Red stars to hotter blue stars? Or even red giants and white dwarfs?

Thanks all, don't wanna make a big quote stack here but I appreciate it very much.

Much obliged.

I like the pulpy title font thing going on, nice job. :)

The PSD is a bit messy right now but I'll clean it up, so I'll put it up once I do that, but I'll also take a shot at making a PS4 cover myself. This particular screenshot is a bit tricky because the spaceship on the cover is very close to the left edge of the image, so wrapping that up for the box cover isn't easy, unless I flip the entire image, so it needs some tinkering I guess. I'll try to find some other suitable screenshots as well, also maybe do the title in one line as eyeball_kid suggested.
Making a really cool box cover art I think will be much more doable once the game comes out and people make some awesome downsampled (and very high res) screenshots, because the standard 1080p ones are probably kinda low for print.

Thanks! :) Love how you made your cover look so much like an old book when you zoom in a little! That's why I tried to do a comic style, to see if I could get something similar. Going to try a box art now, but I'll probably post it in the boxart thread as to not spam this one with stuff!

Btw, is there going to be different star types in the game? Cooler Red stars to hotter blue stars? Or even red giants and white dwarfs?

Supposedly yes, along with binary stars and possibly other unknown phenomena. They've stayed pretty tight lipped on what we'd find, but you can tell there are different colored stars even just when they're floating around in the "star chart" universe map.

Also not known whether the different stars have any effect on their respective solar systems beyond just aesthetics. But if I had to guess, I'd imagine it is just an aesthetic choice and not accurately simulating what sort of solar system can actually exist around such a star.

And those are all just variations on one ship.

True, yeah, I don't know how many "base" ship types there will be, but I know science ships will look different than fighter ships or trading ships. I just like the fact that these ships are not just "attach missile pod C to body type B" like so many games do, but actually procedurally blend different parts to create new 3d models.

Btw, is there going to be different star types in the game? Cooler Red stars to hotter blue stars? Or even red giants and white dwarfs?

Yup. NMS is not rigidly based on the real universe, but it will approximate the types of things we see in our universe. So yes there will be multiple star types/colors, and these have effects on things like the type of elements found in the star system, temperatures of the planets, visible light, etc.

Sort of off topic:

I've been planning on recording a sort of nature show with my son while playing this game. I haven't purchased a camera yet, but when I do, there are options to make the streams private, correct? Not sure I want to broadcast publicly just yet.

Second row, far right. You know what, I find that ship, I'm gonna go right ahead and buy it. That is my kind of ship. Give me that ship.

It'd be really cool if your player character model was procedurally generated as well. I mean, why not?

The planets, flora, fauna, ships, and weapons are procedurally generated, so why not the player character? At the very least, have it's base skeleton be a bipedal creature with two legs and two arms, but outside of that, why not just have the rest of you be procedural as well? Of course, what would dictate your seed? Player profile? How may trophies you have? I don't know. It would be cool if we weren't all the same person in a space suit. Just a thought I had right now.

Also, do screenshot threads have titles? I was just going to name it "No Man's Sky Screenshot Thread." lol. I've already got the thread saved to my notepad, so on August 8th, I'll post it, probably sometime during the day or evening. I'm assuming it's going to go live in NA at 9PM PST (The desire to double dip and buy digital is great, so I can play it immediately, not have to wait for my delivery Tuesday...). I'd like to have the screenshot thread up before then. I don't know how quickly those threads go up before release date.

I hadn't seen that second video. I was trying not to, but I caved. Too excited!

It showed off a lot that even I didn't know and I've been following it since the beginning. That 20 minutes sure went quickly. This game is going to eat my life.

My only question, or concern is: can we run in the game?

I'm wondering whether he was walking slowly so we could see everything? Or whether that's the top speed due to the spacesuit.
