ReCore low price point due to being a new franchise despite Inafune's name attached

When ReCore releases in September, interested parties will notice the game runs around $20 less than a typical new release.

The lower price point, according to Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg, boils down to ReCore being a new franchise – even though it has well-known developer Keiji Inafune attached.

ReCore will also be released in September, which can be a hit or miss month for game releases. This year, September is mainly an “expansion” and sports game month, so there aren’t many action-adventure titles for the Comcept and Armature Studio-developed game to content with.

Plus, the release window is just ahead of the holiday rush which is packed with big franchise releases. With an open release month and a lower cost of $40 in lieu of the usual $60, the lack of a price barrier will also, hopefully, convince customers to give the game a shot.

“We wanted there to be no barriers, Greenberg said in the latest TXR Podcast (via GameSpot). “We wanted to be able to give you a great triple-A title that gives you $60 of value but if you aren’t sure, not let that be the barrier of a trade-off. That’s why we priced it at $40. We hope that will increase its chances of having success as a new IP.

“With new IP like that, launch timing matters a lot. So that’s why you’re seeing us launch it as our first title of the season, getting it out early. The second thing is it doesn’t have an existing base of fans. So we have to build that fan base, earn their trust [and] earn their dollar.”

During E3 2016 last month, Alex was able to get his hands on a demo of the Microsoft exclusive. He described ReCore as “a little bit Metroid Prime, a little bit Mega Man.” If you missed his impressions of the demo, you can give it a read through the link.

ReCore will be released September 13 in North America and September 16 in Europe. It features cross-play and cross-save between Windows 10 and Xbox One.

from what they have shown, recore isn't anywhere near to be an AAA game
selling it for a lower price is still a cool thing though

To be fair there hasn't been much reception for the game. But releasing it for $40 would help pool people over in Fall.

But it's hard competing when so many big games come out at the same time.

Although, I think people could assume that its lower price might mean it's a remaster/release or a budget title which could make some look elsewhere. That was my initial thought, anyway.

Considering I'm on NeoGAF and didn't know who Inafune was until recently, I think it's reasonable to say that his name is going to have basically zero influence on the general sales.

I've only seen trailers but I'm really looking forward to this.
Pre-ordered it for £28 from Amazon and get a free Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts code.

It's all very well that there are few mainstream Western releases for it to compete with, but there's Final Fantasy XV, Bioshock Collection, Dragon Quest VII, Valkyrie Drive, Cold Steel II, and the JP release of Persona 5, if you're into the niche.

Recore gets me so hyped that it's Day 1 despite all the other distractions.

After the whole mess with Mighty No. 9, no one really cares if it has his name attached to it or not...

Yeah, at this point this is more true: "ReCore low price point due to being a new franchise and because Inafune's name attached"

It's an interesting subject. Value proposition is pretty complex in today's gaming market. I suspect by pricing at $40 consumers may presume the game is a budget release and not a AAA game.

Perfect first two posts! Ha ha!

ReCore will also be released in September, which can be a hit or miss month for game releases. T

Is there any month that isn't hit or miss? Why don't publishers just release in guaranteed hit month?

I thought the low price point came from them using Unity instead of something like UE4.

Hope this game is profitable though.

Feels like this IP has franchise potential. Something I don't think MS expected after the initial CGI reveal.

Inafune hate is ridiculously disproportionate.

Good decision to lower the price though, the holidays are hella crowded. I still think the game is going to have a hard time doing well. It's a game that attracts a smaller audience, on a console that has a comparatively smaller base to begin with. There's a PC release but most PC gamers are adamantly against anything not on Steam.

Depends on reviews also. See Inside.

lol.... Inafunes name means nothing at all. Only some hardcore hardcores know who he is.

Can't wait for the "Mighty No.9's Keiji Inafune presents" ads ;)

I have this pre-ordered on Amazon since its only £28 but now I think I might just go digital since for once the digital price is not overly priced - It's £29.99.

Love the look of this. It reminds me of Jet Force Gemini and other arcade style 3D shooters.

I appreciate the cheap price. lol

That's true, although Inside was a $20 game and didn't have to fight against people's preconception about them. Are there any numbers or general consensus on it's performance on both Xbox One and PC? It's not my cup of tea so I didn't pay too much attention to it but all I can remember for the PC version was people being upset about having to use the Windows store.

Recore was the game that pushed me to get an Xbox One. It wasn't one of the giants like Killer Instinct, Scaleboumd, or Sunset Overdrive, but it was the straw that broke the camel's back. It looks really neat. I love the artstyle. Can't wait to play it.

That being said, I don't see this game being a franchise.

I'm excited for it based on gameplay, but has there been any word about the scope of it? Is it going to be super short or something?

I guess it's because content-wise it's pretty light?

Otherwise why would they do this? They market it as a big AAA game, but I guess it's just not there (production value and all, I'm not bashing the game prior to its release).

Game looks pretty budget tbh, but if that's the reason they're going with... I mean, sure, I guess? Either way, I'm excited for it. $40 is cool with me. I really hope it does well if only because the main character seems cool, lol. Hoping it's less Inafune and more Armature, though.

I think it's more likely that it's a new franchise with an AA budget. Absolutely nothing wrong with AA budget games as long as they're solid, but I have no idea how you communicate that from a PR perspective without making it sound "lesser than". Usually I'd think they would use the phrase "It's a smaller title" or "smaller scope" but for all I know, this is a 20 hour game.

More like having a low budget and not being able to flesh out the ideas like they wanted to. The game will probably get sales just because it's 40.
