Leona just CD'd into Grand Saber, follow, into EX DM Into CDM and pretty much killed Kyo in 5 seconds. GLORIOUS. The Twitch chat now thinks she's a SSJ God. I am, once again, more than OK with this.

Practical Powerful Leona is wonderful.

LOL At Alice in general. Looks fun too play (even though shes a fangirl gestalt of a bunch of other fighters; that's a positive to me :)

I agree, I really like her so far.

Also, is the stream messed up right now or is it just my phone? >_<

Edit:

Oh, wait, this might not be live. I'm not used to the twitch app.

Alice looks like she fits in with the way people are playing very well, much like Luong did early on. She seems to make sense, unlike characters like Love Heart or Xanadu, though both are improving as the day goes on.

Eh...why not just have Kukuro from SamSho instead of Alice? Do you really need more T and A in in this game SNK? :p

if the boss is anything like the leak describes, maybe they're saving Kuroko's talents for a later game of the new story arc.

but where's her Kim reference D:

Kim gets to be the Gang-Il reference forever instead now.

Alive looks fun, although I still find myself wishing she'd get another outfit that would make it easier to take her more seriously, or at least that she's ready to fight and not for a day at Sound Beach.

She did get a new outfit I thought. In all her other depictions she's just in a bikini top lol

I like her design alot. Favorite new character after Sylvie atm.

On the topic of Alice' outfit: I like it. It brings attention to her legs, which seem to be the source of her best normals. And the loose super-collar look is way underplayed design wise. I'm glad she's not sporting a plain bikini top, stupid Makoto Nanaya-style underboob, or anything that too directly looks like Mary or Terry.

The other colors they gave her are pretty nice too.

All good points. It's an understated outfit, but somewhat unique in its own way.

Is anyone aware of how many hours from now till when the SNK Developers Panel starts? Not good with timezones! And does anyone know if it will be streamed? Thanks!

The new characters in this build are looking interesting. As a fan of charge characters, I'm really gravitating towards Meitenkun!

Sad to see some characters not get a lot of use, if any at all. I'm always interested to see what people can pull with Chang or Choi!

Alice's voice is really weird, as if she has an English VA and Japanese VA working in tandem. Plus her hmm-hmms she makes while rolling get annoying real quick.

Kensou sounds like an exaggeration of his character. Can't tell if that's a good thing or not.

Does anyone on team China have a command grab? If they do I might actually just play that team straight up. All three of those characters are super cool.

Tung does. Dragon punch motion+kick. I don't know what it does, but it is a command throw.

Looking back on today's stream, there were showings of every new character in this new build. They all look good, except for Xanadu. Xanadu looks rough. I hesitate to call him bad, but he didn't have a good showing on today's stream. I think folks will say he's bad once we get the big essay reports.

All good points. It's an understated outfit, but somewhat unique in its own way.

Thanks, I think it works pretty nicely in the end! There's so many styles that could clash or be ridiculous... but I like the way most of the stuff turned out here.

Is anyone aware of how many hours from now till when the SNK Developers Panel starts? Not good with timezones! And does anyone know if it will be streamed? Thanks!

What's the PST time? And where are you? It'd be 3 hours from my east coast time from that... but not sure where to look it up (I never find the time on the Evo site)

Alice's voice is really weird, as if she has an English VA and Japanese VA working in tandem. Plus her hmm-hmms she makes while rolling get annoying real quick.

Eh, her engrish sounds a bit more spot on than most of the characters, but I don't feel like she's so much better that it sounds like 2 VAs. She reminds me of listening to some Koreans shift from their native language to English; the entire tone of their voice changes, as if one language they have a deep voice, and the other they have a more pitchy one.

I don't mind her roll sounds (or any of them), though they are prominent. As a child of the arcades, it's the prominent sounds that rung through my head after leaving, and that I hummed on the way back...

Kensou sounds like an exaggeration of his character. Can't tell if that's a good thing or not.

Kensou is jarring as hell since the traditional voice has been around so long. On his own, as this new take on him... I actually kinda like it. He's not as obviously china-inspired in his foley as someone like Meitenkun (Eiii-Yahh!), but he also doesn't sound like the default teen Japanese male performance.

And no one brings it up, but his costume is obvious a compromise between the XII kung-fu and the traditional casual clothes. There's even colors that reference his XII default and his XIII style "Duo Lon" looking outfit color. I also think he looks better close-up than far away, as his hair looks less like a mat, and more like it's suppose to.

Does anyone on team China have a command grab? If they do I might actually just play that team straight up. All three of those characters are super cool.

Tung does. Dragon punch motion+kick. I don't know what it does, but it is a command throw.

It seems to have HORRIBLE range, though, so it's more of a tool to combo into. Why would you want to do that? I have no idea yet, lol. Maybe the EX allows follow ups or has amazing range...

Looking back on today's stream, there were showings of every new character in this new build. They all look good, except for Xanadu. Xanadu looks rough. I hesitate to call him bad, but he didn't have a good showing on today's stream. I think folks will say he's bad once we get the big essay reports.

I don't think anyone that relies on guard points and counter play looks good under people right now. There are people that think GEESE looks bad, because so much of his full play is shouldered by the counters he has all over.

His Normals also seem purposely weird:
 • His knee slide is totally cancellable
 • HIs crouching strong punch (?) Is a 2 hit sweep
 • Crouching hard kick as an AA (and maybe on ground) pops up for follow-ups.
 • His AA special isn't derpy invincible. Most likely, it's a thing meant to cancel out of a guardpoint heavy normal, rather than invuln by itself.

Add to all that, no one seems to cancel into DAMAGE with him at all. He never could capitalize on ANY opportunities. This on a day when Ramon and Leona figured out they can near kill out of almost ANY openings, lol. (Leona with Advance Cancel working as it does is insanely wonderful).

Edit: also don't know if this was mentioned but all of Alice's moves cause pachinko coins or balls to explode when they collide.

It took me much longer to notice this than I'd like to admit. I really like it for her; Also, it looked like her dizzy animation had sparkles or something flying out of her head, too? She's full of personality and details.

Wait. But. Iori shouldn't have ever lost his flames. Right? Unless everyone still remembers what happened during the Ash Saga? Somehow?

As per the true ending of XIII, the events still happened... just without Ash. How does this make sense? Stay tuned to XIV to find out! Because I've wondered about that since seeing him "fade" from pictures where Chizuru was obviously still under duress, y'know? "If he didn't attack her, WHO DID?!?"

Seems to state it's at 12 PM... No timezone though, but I assume US Pacific? I live in Sweden so I'm not completely sure, heh.

Not sure any roll sounds will ever be able to beat english XII Ralf's THATALLYAGOT!

I'm indifferent about the new voices so far. While Kensou DOES feel jarring right now, I'm optimistic they will feel natural in the long run! Mai's new voice she got years ago is particularly fantastic and I have no trouble hearing either her old or new voice as I feel they both fit. Liking the older sounding Yuri as well.

Also people asked for Xanadu and Mai, I hear?

SNK guys with Akira Nishitani!

Haha, this is quite cool.

Seems to state it's at 12 PM... No timezone though, but I assume US Pacific? I live in Sweden so I'm not completely sure, heh.

From what I see, EST is 1 hour ahead of Stockholm, Sweden. 12 PM Pacific is 3PM for eastern, so for you, it should be 2PM, going by that.

Not sure any roll sounds will ever be able to beat english XII Ralf's THATALLYAGOT!

I liked Kyo's "BunnnnnnnnnnTA!" roll sound in Maximum Impact, lol. And I swear Lilly Cane simply "ARF!" 'd like a dog. Oy.

Anywho, people in Chat thought Love Heart sounded like Romi Park. It'd be pretty awesome to finally have the voice of Edward Elric, Naoto from Persona, and Loran Cehack from Gundam in the KOFverse. I've always liked Kaori Horie's Yuri, I never though she sounded younge or anything... just... like Yuri, since she's been her voice since AoF2. Everyone's missing or shifted the nuances I'm used to from over the years... but guess that just means I'll have to hopefully find new ones to love.

Wait. But. Iori shouldn't have ever lost his flames. Right? Unless everyone still remembers what happened during the Ash Saga? Somehow?

That's a very good question. IIRC, the story mode ending cinematics in XIII show Ash getting wiped from existence but events that occurred during the saga still occur regardless of his involvement in them, such as Shen and Oswald's card game. Maybe Iori gets his powers stolen from someone else. There still would be evil forces plotting to rule the world anyway.

This really opens up a lot of possibilities for the main plotline now that there's a possibility that XIV takes place long after the NEST saga but with a huge and vague gap where the Ash Saga was. Matsu we'll find out through the story mode?

The one thing I wanted people do to as Xanadu was cancel a normal into running bear grab, just to see if it ticked on block or combo'd/caused a reset on hit. NOBODY who used Xanadu on stream thought of that, instead choosing to do it raw.

I will say that his normals are really weird. I couldn't figure out what normals went with what button. He's like a boxer characters in that most of his kick normals don't seem to be actual kicks. He can cancel his sweep into a special on whiff, which is nice. I noticed a player whiffed his sweep into the anti-air windmill to hit somebody who jumped. That could lead to weird anti-airs.

Like KoD, Xanadu will probably be one of those characters whose true potential won't be realized until the game is out.

Oh yes. Kaori Horie is THE Yuri voice for sure. I feel the ultimate test for the new one would be to see if she could perform the Shin Chou Upper voiceclip to be on par with the energy Horie put into it in 2002UM haha. Would be awesome if the next webcast detailed some of the new voices.

Suddenly felt really nostalgic about the old voices, I miss Monster Maezuka's Ralf lol

Thanks for the timestamp by the way!

The Clark play today has been great, glad to see my main grappler man Clark still performing well!

About the amusement park (another world team stage), one thing that kind of caught my eye was the witch looking mascot thing in the middle of the stage. Try looking at her the next time you see that stage, felt like someone put a lot of love into her animation.

Ramon and Alice are looking super solid, people were able to do well with them real quick.

Ramon is looking like the best grappler atm.

Really like Love Heart's neutral pose. She seems like she will be strong at the mid range with that sword slash special and also the crouch C, which is cancellable. Her kick DM looked invincible on start up.

When Meitenkun hit with his DM he kind of fell to the ground and dozed of a little lol. His voicing sounds like a combination of Chinese and Japanese?

KOF XIV combos compilation EVO 2016

Polygon interviewed the SNK crew at Evo:

I asked the King of Fighters team, represented at Evo by producer Yasuyuki Oda, artist Eiichi Ogura, game designer Yuji Watanabe and lead game designer Hidetoshi Ishizawa, what SNK’s rebirth means to them.

They had a common answer: They want to bring back SNK’s classic properties and release new entries.

""we also want to make new IP""

"In the future, I want to get back to [intellectual properties] we have, like Samurai Shodown and Metal Slug," Ishizawa said through a translator. "And not only just get back to previous IPs, but we also want to make new IP."

Ishizawa is a longtime fan of SNK, even though he recently left Capcom to join the one-time rival of his former company. In fact, many fighting game fans know Ishizawa by his nickname, "Neo_G."

"I also want to create a new Samurai Shodown," added Watanabe. "And I’d like Ishizawa [to make it]. And a new Garou lead by Oda-san. I’ll leave my fate up to them.

"I want to set up brand-new IP [as well]."

Ogura echoed the desires of his colleagues, saying that, outside of King of Fighters, "the rest of [SNK’s] titles have been very quiet." Ogura said he’d like to revisit properties like Ikari Warriors and World Heroes, which he said he’d like to "brush up" for more polished games.

Oda, who previously worked at Dimps on Capcom’s Street Fighter 4, agreed with his team, saying he’d like to move forward in terms of detail for the rebirth of SNK’s older games. He also joked that he’d like to revitalize SNK’s presence at Japanese game centers.

Really hope XIV does well for them so they can make the above happen.

Atlus stream begin again! https://www.twitch.tv/atlususa

Now to reply to all these other post...

The one thing I wanted people do to as Xanadu was cancel a normal into running bear grab, just to see if it ticked on block or combo'd/caused a reset on hit. NOBODY who used Xanadu on stream thought of that, instead choosing to do it raw.

Yeah, the same way I feel about Maxima's running grab, lol. There ARE times when opponents don't notice it on a block CD, or it can be used to punish a back-hop after a jump in, but people rarely seem to employ this. Scrubby beginner strats, but so is basically everything else at this stage... abuse this stupidity now!

Yup. He's much more of a slow grappler-ish type than I was thinking. But I barely saw anyone try to get good at his buttons; no spamming of crouch Cs or far Cs like with Love and Mui^2. Once people figures specials weren't easy street like Alice, they seemed totally lost, lol.

As if Yuri will get Shin Chou Upper back... XD The last webcast at least told us Kyo and Nako's Seiyuu, I hope they tell a lot more in this next one too. I'd legit buy DLC costumes with the classic voices attached, I won't lie.

I'm impressed by how well the new VAs are doing, but classics will always be loved.

Thanks for the timestamp by the way!

The Clark play today has been great, glad to see my main grappler man Clark still performing well!

Atlus Rep has admitted the panel won't be streamed, but they're recording it for uploading. And NP!

Clark should be full of awesome in this game. I feel like he'll be at least as solid as this early Ramon play, once people learn the path of his moves.

About the amusement park (another world team stage), one thing that kind of caught my eye was the witch looking mascot thing in the middle of the stage. Try looking at her the next time you see that stage, felt like someone put a lot of love into her animation.

That BG makes so little sense, I love it, lol. You have Popcorn machines as part of the central mechanized attraction...

Ramon and Alice are looking super solid, people were able to do well with them real quick.

Ramon is looking like the best grappler atm.

I swear Ramon's jump arcs and strong normals look stronger than ever. I'm not great at him, but he feels so much less janky and awkward, and more solidly built to mem from watching.

Love is weird, because she seems like the kind of straight-forward character people should fall into easily (Good ranges and a DP!), but her particulars seem harder to understand (the dash upper has huge startup, and looks like it should be a follow-up to CD wall splat, her command normal is a close range stomp, her double slash appears to hit overhead on 2nd hit). Unlike Ramon, people are having a hard time getting that damage, and Elysion Sword DM doesn't seem as easy to confirm off sword as people would like.

Meitenkun's sleep after DM also happens even if he whiffs... the boy can't stay awake! And when he falls down from sweeps and KO, he plants his head on the pillow, lol. He is full of characteristic, fun animation. I wasn't looking forward to him on a personal level, but him basically being Shota Fu Rue EX is something I didn't really expect...

Yeah, it's pretty much playing right into my theory about XIV taking place in a soft-rebooted KOF timeline that snapped back into a facsimile of the former one, just without Ash/Saiki's involvement (or the weirdness that 2003 and XI introduced).

It's the ultimate, DC comics styled narrative handwave allotted for the new KOF team and their scenario writer to do whatever they want, and I think that's pretty nifty.

Could you imagine if it retconned Sylvie into having been on NESTS team back in 2001 instead of K9999

Thoughts on some other Characters:

Zarina: *Enjoying Laban's work with Zarina on stream*

So it looks like she has 2 crouching far range lights that link very easily, and then she can choose to do command normals out of them; 1 on them is basically a backflip that seems to leave her safe, and her other is move of a combo filler. It really seems like she's suppose to pester with normals, and then let specials fly once she's confirmed them. All of her specials look drawn out and unsafe to me, so far, so not so much safety like Leona's Grand Saber or Terry's Burn Knuckle. (I really doubt KURUKURU is a safe or smart thing to do on block, GC-Roll would probably destroy her afterwards, lol.)

FLOWER UPPACUT DM seems to be a great anti-air, and this is good in a game where invincible reversals seem to be less frequent than usual.

Leaping attack throw is very Orochi-team like, like Chris or O.Yashiro. Interested to see how this works out!

Her actual normals look good so far, she seems to have good ranges and a mix of things to jump or poke with.

I still don't think we've seen EX normal moves for her so far. No idea if she's just a "more hits" character, or if she gets loads of setup and such from her EXs.

Gang IL:

dd+k seems like a bit part of his gameplay, but it's not getting used much for now. His other tools are good, but aren't as straightforward as Kim at all. You have to branch his moves into things, and this hasn't come as naturally as Alice has for people. He has a command cross-up, which no one seems to be using ATM, too.

HE'S NOT KIM, and that seems to really confuse people. Which is fine, but it also means we're less likely to see his potential early on.

Random:
 • I think I saw Maxima's BEAM have guard point... which is great if so, since it has pretty slow start-up for a full screen attack.
 • Mature's EX Metal Massacre appears to hit low, dashes through the opponent, and pops them up?!? That's new!
 • One thing that seems to be nice about cancelling from simple DMs into EXDMs for advance cancel, is that the damage seems well-calculated. For example, Leona can cancel her V slasher into her Slash Saber, without worry of needing to cancel the V slasher after the 2nd hit, while she's jumping on the other side to take off into the air. The damage SEEMS to be calculated as if the whole thing hit, regardless of when it was canceled.
This last thing is really significant, because it means you can cancel into DMs at easier /sensible points, without sacrificing the painful hits that should matter.

Has anyone used King of Dinos, like, at all?

No one is using him because they're under the impression that he sucks. I think one person used him yesterday on the Atlus stream, and it wasn't a good showing. I'd be surprised if we see a Xanadu on stream today from anybody playing in the tournament.

If people put time into KoD, you'll read about it in a big essay post after EVO.

LoL at Laban just burning through all Zarina's EXs there. And trying some MAX combos with her. Interesting, interesting...

I really have to say, "Survivors Under the Sky" might be my favorite Ikari theme ever already. It has this perfect Fight ON! + Fancy Top Gun 80's action feel to it. I always felt like "Irregular Mission" sounded like it'd be a good Fatal Fury theme in some parts, and "Jungle Bouncer" I feel like is more a RALF theme than a IKARI theme, lol.

Now Laban brings us our first on-stream DINNAH TIME! KoD is GO. Lets see if anything good happens.

LOL At Alice in general. Looks fun too play (even though shes a fangirl gestalt of a bunch of other fighters; that's a positive to me :)

Alice is looking pretty good honestly. Jumpins remind me of Leona with her hurt box pretty farback. Plus she has a elbow dash like Andy but hers has her on block backflip out of trouble...seems like it may be more whif punishable though on recovery unless she can cancel the recovery into something.

Overall looks fun. Good poke range but a bit slow at times.

My gal Mui Mui on the other hand just keeps delivering. As an Ironfist dude shes a dream with how well her rekkas and combo links work. She can combo off her rising fang!
