Pokemon Live-Action Movie a Go at Legendary (Detective Pikachu)

I'm not sure how I feel about this. I want it to do well, but it just seems so odd.

If they're smart they will get Robert Downey Jr. to voice Pikachu and watch the money roll in.

I was hoping for this to be at least amusing (if probably bad), but now that it's Detective Pikachu...

I'm actually into it and that scares me?

Just please release the game in the US, though.

There's a Pikachu that can talk to humans and he's a detective
I mean a buddy cop movie with Pikachu being able to talk seems fairly easy to work around and market. I mean I didn't expect a new take on Ash or anything so this works.

Well hm. Ok. I guess to me this makes a lot more sense as something you do for a spinoff movie. But I do agree it's probably an easier/cheaper thing to make. I just have a hard time getting over the fact that a movie franchise built off the "regular universe" has a lot more potential both as a movie and as a crowd pleaser. It would be truly unique whereas what I'm hearing about Detective Pikachu gives me Alvin and the Chipmunk or Garfield vibes when put in to movie form.

This movie is gonna be terrible. But seems like this is the cheapest way to make a Pokemon movie.

A real one with lots of monsters and battles will eat up a crazy amount of budge to pull of right.

A kii. Nintendo and the Pokemon company are dumb as shit. This will flop harder than Ratchet & Clank. Of all the premises to go with..

If you genuinely think this will "flop harder than Ratchet & Clank", it's definitely not Nintendo or TPCi who are "dumb as shit".

Lol, what the fuck? An american Pokémon movie with Detective Pikachu? What a time to be alive!

Curious to see the result, it can be good... or really bad.

Woah. I was not expecting this. My hype for a live action Pokemon movie just went from 0 to 120. I love buddy cop/noir detective/mysteries... I love Pokemon... this is so weird, it could totally work.

And we HAVE to have Devito. I'll accept no substitutes!

This could work. But it needs strong talent to do so. I mean Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a great movie and it's basically a crime story but with cartoons interacting with live action.

I was wondering how they could make a live action movie without wasting a shitton of money on CGI, but I'll be honest, Detective Pikachu is ripe for it.

I certainly did not expect the first foray into a Pokemon live action movie to be Detective Pikachu. Maybe it's better that way. It could be in the vein of Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Please please PLEASE don't be just human actors for 70% of the movie, with barely visible Pikachu ears and detective's hat visible.

Less Ted, more "This world has Pokemon in it co-existing with humans, so you'll see some just THERE every other scene".

Honestly, as far as live-action Pokémon movies go, Detective Pikachu was probably the best course of action. That said, the idea is a bit recent, so maybe it'll allow Legendary to get creative with the concept.

Hopefully this means that we'll get a localization for the game to coincide with the movie, but I suppose the 3DS would be long since dead by the time the movie drops.

With a huge IP like Pokemon I'm expecting lots of CG Pokemon all over.

Hyper realistic CG Pikachu is going to look so freaky. I do hope they'll keep Pikachu more stylized, even if it clashes with the LA actors.

Detective Pikachu is an amazing idea for a movie. Let's just hope they have a great voice for Pikachu, and include many other Pokémon!

the Death and Return of Ash Ketchum will live on in our hearts
Good riddance. He would have made terrible decisions with the movie. Dudes entire career only exists cause of his daddy.

this is really really smart and terrible is where im at.

I just picture Pikachu merchandise overload minions style. Smart for kids.

older, "nostalgic" fans who wanted to see something like the game's / show adventure made = not so much.

I bet it's just super, super broad and treated very non-chalantly about the world it inhabits

funny thing, toho distributed pokemon movies in Japan and guess what they did, Godzilla!

Imagine a live-action movie set in the Pokémon universe, in which Pokémon trainers must defeat a giant Godzilla-esque Pokémon.

Now that's a concept.

I'll watch Detective Pikachu for sure, but it's not the Pokémon we know and love, as it's not about battling and capturing (unless they shove it in there too).

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
Eh I disagree, I think the concept is neat and honestly not something we see with Pokemon a lot.

I like that you compare Pikachu merchandise to Minions for the worst possible comparison, and not, like, the 20 years of Pikachu merchandise overload that have existed already

you're right of course, but what im picturing is a very fast and concentrated boom around him coming to film

I mean, everyone's gotta be aiming for that at this point with these sort of franchises and this seems like a fast route for it, rather than focusing on a ton of creatures

People might throw a fit over the "animal fighting for the amusement of trainers" aspect of a regular Pokémon story, so this is one way of dodging that bullet.

I mean, there's already a focus on Pikachu? Obviously as the series mascot, but even a lot of the recent merch has been centered on them.
