NPD Sales Results For June 2016 (new format, read OP)

Is this what to expect every month going forward

Essentially.

You know what?

Include mobile data in this list too. NPD is already shit, just go all the way with it. I want to see where fucking "Gordon Ramsey stupid kitchen bullshit" lands on this list.

How is it that this data stays under wraps as well as it does? Considering the level of interest, were it any other context, I would have expected a leak of the full report almost immediately. Does NPD have the smallest circulation ever or is there another reason?

I wonder if NPD has actually seen an increase in their subscription numbers by obfuscating even the most straightforward data. How stupid.

So no more individual sales numbers?

I've been interested to see how Xenoblade Chronicles X has done in the US but the last numbers where from February.

We use the Media Create threads for general JP mobile news, and we actually have good retail data there. Might as well use NPD threads for general US mobile discussion as well. We probably have about as much data on that as dedicated game systems.

I guess.

I don't see much passion for mobile game numbers and passion is what makes things engaging.

Probably cause there's no two sides at war. Well, if there is, it's not prominent enough. People want a "team"

It's not like Pkmn Go fanboys are fighting Candy Crush ones.....i hope.

Will be nice to get accurate numbers that track units from all sources. Get a good representation of digital sales versus physical. At least with the old format you got a decent understanding of how retail was doing now it's kinda half assed and less informative. More like Nelson ratings I guess...

Very small circulation these days. Publisher count of packaged games has plummeted. Finding leakers is much easier now.

Regardless of new format, good for mirror's edge. Game is far from perfect, but at least now there's a glimmer they might continue doing stuff with it.

But for real, GTA V man. Marathon legs.

Overall:

June retail game sales are down 22% year over year.

Hardware was down 42% year over year.

Console and Handheld game sales were down 20% year over year.

Physical and Steam PC software sales were down 20% year over year.

Software:

  1. Overwatch*
  2. Grand Theft Auto V
  3. Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  4. Doom 2016**
  5. Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst
  6. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End**
  7. NBA 2K16
  8. Call of Duty: Black Ops III
  9. Destiny: The Taken King
  10. Minecraft**
  • *No Battle.net sales
    **No digital sales
Notes:
- This is a revenue ranking. Previous threads were unit rankings.
- “Poor comparisons for new launches were a major reason for the software sales decline seen this June,” said Callahan. “June 2016 launches decreased 67 percent, translating to 1.8 million fewer units, and nearly $114 million fewer dollars.”
- “Specifically, the top new launch of June 2015 was Batman: Arkham Knight, which sold over five times the amount of unit and dollar sales generated by the top June 2016 new launch, Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” said Callahan.
- “May 2016 launches sold 84 percent more in June compared to May 2015 launches last June, when looking at dollar sales. April launches fared poorly due to a comparison to the performance of April 2015 launches like Mortal Kombat X with a drop of 70 percent in June sales.”

Hardware:

PS4: #1 platform

Notes:
- “Declines in average prices by 15 percent, coupled with a 32 percent decline in units resulted in hardware spending totaling $181 million, a 42 percent decrease versus last June,” the NPD analyst explained. “[Current-generation] hardware, the primary driver of this decrease, saw sales decline 43 percent, or $117 million.”
- “After 32 months since the launches of the PS4 and Xbox One, the combined cumulative hardware sales for these two consoles exceed the sales of their predecessors by 40 percent at the same point in their lifecycles,” said Callahan.

Other Info:

I am sure this has been addressed, but looking at the list MS, Sony, and Bethesda do not seem to be offering up digitali sales for first party games. Activision seems on board with everything outside of digital sales of Blizzard games. And no way to know with Nintendo at this point. If NPD wants to remain relavent they need to move in this direction, but if only half of the industry is cooperating, then they are not far from that site that shall not be named.

Wow...Minecraft 10th based on physical sales alone?

Well, considering this is the first time that any digital sales have been a part of the NPD results, that's how the Minecraft results have always been. Any time we've seen Minecraft chart (every month!), it's been physical only, which is why I assume the 360 version kept selling better than the rest of the SKUs. More people were probably buying the digital versions of PS4/XB1 instead of physical (except for a few months ago, when PS4 version was the leading SKU), but there was no indication if that was in fact the case. And going by the asterisks explaining they are still not counting digital versions, I doubt that will change any time soon.

Prediction thread has all leaked info.

Would it actually be safe to post that info in here? It's still the normal leaks we usually get.

Yes, i saw that. I meant next month and beyond. I dunno it is safe or not. But you can see that some members wrote something like this : "numbers from gamerconnect via Aqua". Maybe it is safe. And i also read somewhere a few days ago that Aqua tried to get back here, but GAF administration rejected her, so, she went to Chartz.

Wow this new NPD sucks really bad. Too late, too little, too much revenue instead of units, too many missing digital data. Why even bother? I'm disappointed, son

Just here to pay my respects, rip npd thread. Once a great source of excitement and now a shadow of it's former self.

Pretty much my thoughts...

Miss those "it prints money" gifs and things like that from the heyday of these threads. ;/

Good night sweet NPD. May you live on in our collective hearts as we reminisce about your past glory!

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
I rarely visited the NPD threads after we stopped getting hardware numbers and the charts added all version of multiplattform games together...now there is really no reason to visit at all.

RIP NPD Thread. Nov/Dec 2006 were nuts...thosr memories - good times.

Top lol

The fact that an NPD thread is only about 5 pages after several hours is quite sad, new format is awful.

Oh well, I look forward to any meaningful discussions that can come out of this if any.

Edit: hmm looking back, it's insane how much work Batman AK did last year for software. Seems a mega hit for WB which I'm glad for considering its one of the best games this gen.
