NPD Sales Results For June 2016 (new format, read OP)

They mean screwed in the sense that we will not get a sense of how well they are selling. They are screwed because it will be very hard for them to break into top ten like you described.

And beyond that, NPD results are widely reported in the enthusiast press, so the ongoing picture presented will be that AAA blockbusters with $100 limited edition and $50 day one season passes are the only viable titles left in the console space.

They're making 40x that with the microtransactions. Ok so I don't know how much they are making in microtransactions but it is very apparent by their actions that it is much more than they feel they would make with an SP expansion. So for them it makes sense not to pull people away from supporting the online game. Not that I don't want SP but it is what it is.
It's probably the profit margin. Single player DLCs would probably bring in more revenue, but it also requires significantly more investment on their part.

Kind of amazed people still thought the NPD threads were useful. Remember when we got actual unit sales figures for the top 10? Then we got leaks of ballpark estimates for a while, and then those got sealed up too and we just had "well here's a list of games I guess." OP stop being updated with back-of-envelope calculations for sales figures a long time ago, too.

Face it, NPD threads have been dead for years.

Can someone help explain something to me? The linked article says that PC retail and Steam software sales in the US were $27.8 million. Steam Spy estimated that just the Steam Summer sale in June generated $223 million in revenue. What gives?

I'm not usually NPD thread follower, but I imagine companies are more interested in revenue than units sold. It doesn't help those who look from gamer perspective, I guess. It sucks to lose platform info, and it sucks only some games have digital included.

First, part of summer sale was in July. Second, I think Steamspy estimate is global revenue, not US only?

Uncharted 4 at 15 seems low. Bad word of mouth?

No.

It's a great game but as one poster previously mentioned no sale price like some of those ahead of it.

Plus for people like me who are a mix between digital and physical, this doesn't jump out as a nice game to have digitally....say like Overwatch is

EDIT: IIRC Overwatch was the only game ahead of it that was also at the full $59.99 price the entire month of June

Almost certain it only includes steam data from participating publishers in the service, certainly not all steam.

But in the end we largely got the numbers from either insiders or from Nintendo directly. For that nothing has changed

But the people who make said titles will have access to the same information as before so things shouldn't change on their end

I never really followed them that closely and usually caught them the morning after, but this is both a shock to the system and also very disappointing. NPD threads just got weird and not in a good way.

Wow...Minecraft 10th based on physical sales alone?

I would imagine that the Wii U version gave it a nice uptick, due to the demand and being $10 more than most of the other versions. They also launched a new SKU for Xbox One that's also $30 and includes some of the more popular skin packs.

Who doesn't have GTA5 at this point? That is the biggest mystery to me lol. I want to get it on PC but the best sale has still been $30 on steam. Not worth it IMO because I already bought it on 360 and xbone
Believe it or not. I don't. Don't like open world games that much. Played GTA V when it came out. Didn't like it. The last open world game that I loved was Sleepy Dawgz.

MIA for a few months now. Be well, Cream.

Pretty much. NPD and personal leakers are but memories now.

I mean, it's a different type of the same level of what's already well-underway.

They took away overall sales.

Then they only gave us the top ten.

Then they combined SKUs

Now revenue instead of units

Seriously, what a sad downwards spiral has NPD become.
Four years from now:

For you.

Data only comes from a couple of publishers that actually agreed to share it, and it's limited to US numbers only. In short, numbers for Steam are wildly innacurate.

NPD didnt give out sales numbers anyway though, so we would be in the dark regardless of how well things would be selling even if being within the top 10.

I miss units. They were so simple.

Same. I can't tell how exactly the revenue is coming in for games, or if it's just like GTAV, where near zero effort is going to, other than printing discs, shipping them, and keeping the servers up.

Maybe I'm just afraid of change, for once.

But you would think that digital far outweighs physical. Far far outweighs.

It's both publisher and platform based.

Only data from PSN XBL and Steam. Only for a select group of publishers. Only full game sales, no MTX or DLC.

So, no digital data for Minecraft, Doom and UC4 because Sony, Bethesda and Microsoft are not sharing digital data. But even if they were, only revenues from PSN XBL and direct purchases from Steam would be counted,

You've been pretty clear on this but I just wanted to make sure: no uPlay, GOG, Origin etc digital sales on here even if the publisher participates in sharing digital data for PSN, XBL and Steam?

Ex: Say Ubi shares digital data for PSN, XBL and Steam. Are they also sharing it for PC copies bought directly from uPlay or another storefront?

Generally small amount of sales here anyway, but just wanted to ask.

look like NPD thread on the site not to be named is better then the thread on NeoGAF

Detailed data tends to lead to meaningful discussion. We got very little data, outside of several users parroting post by Aqua and Zhuge, they appear to have more.

That is correct. In your example, Ubi Steam data would be included, but not uPlay or any other storefront data.

Exclusive PSN, XBL and Steam only. And only for publishers choosing to participate.

They'll probably do a Sun and Moon special edition to help move the rest of the stock.

I hope Doom keeps on rolling all summer. Amazing game. But yeah, this format is a bore. I wasn't the biggest fan of the combined SKU change a few years ago, and now it is even less informative. It was fun while it lasted.
