Wii U HOMEBREW Discussion Thread [exploits/apps/games/stuff]

Any firmware updates yet that have blocked this? I changed my DNS very shortly after the hack was revealed but may be interested in buying some eShop titles on sale.

No, 5.5.1 is the latest firmware so far and has been for quite a few months. You can disable the DNS, download your games and then put it back on ;)

IOSU (once again) teased for 5.5.1. This kinda looks better than previous teases... but it's still nothing until it's released.

But you don't need this to play those Wii U gems.

Brutal.

I thought about pointing that out, but I didn't know if I wanted to go there...

Anyone else getting a system update right now?

I can't even connect to the internet right now using the tubehax dns. If I take away the tubehax setting and turn on auto obtain it works. Once I change it back to manual it stops wanting to connect. Any reason to this? I hope an update doesn't stop me from using loadiine anymore...

Bear in mind that you will get a "red cross" in the Downloads icon when you're using TubeHax. It's like a false positive for updates: it's trying to connect to Nintendo's servers, but TubeHax is preventing it, so it gives you that error. It doesn't mean there's a system update available.

As far as I can tell, no one else is reporting a system update at the moment.

Edit: There are some reports that TubeHax is failing. It's probably a temporary flux. There's no update, though.

My Dad picked up a cheap as 2H Wii U for me, it's an old one that hasn't been updated for ages. Is there any reason really to keep it as a dedicated homebrew system and my normal Wii U 'pure'? Or should I just sell it off for some cash while it is still going for a decent amount?

At the moment I use my old Wii for homebrew stuff, could it replace that maybe?

Everything a Wii can do in terms of homebrew, the Wii U can do. So there's nothing stopping you from modding your Wii U's vWii and using it for homebrew. And if we ever get IOSU and CFWs, they will probably work in the latest firmware... so keeping a lower OFW Wii U is of no use at the moment, although it can be a good idea just in case something changes in the near future.

If you're not in a dire financial situation and need the money now, I'd say keep it. At worst, you can sell it in the future.

Cheers, I'll think it over.

Anyone have an issue where it freezes after going to loadiine.ovh on the web browser or just after the homebrew icon shows up? This happens 2 out of every three goes and then it works! Also, sd card loading is slow!

Seems wiiubru.com works better and is a bit more immediate than loadiine.ovh.

Is it worth getting a 128gb sd card? I hear you need to format it to fat32 and 64kb clusters to make it work, but its slower too?

Is 5.5.1 still the current system firmware version? Might need to update a game or two and want to know if it's safe.

Can I use homebrew like a iso launcher and yet still be able to play my official on disc Super Mario Maker online ?

Also, does Tokyo Mirage Sessions loadings become faster if I rip it ? Thanks.

For the first question, yes.

For the second question... I don't know. You'll be reading off an SD card, so I wouldn't expect loading times to be much better. At most, on par with the "official" stuff, as far as I have tested. Some games do take a lot of time, though.

I don't know about faster, but I only ever played my copy off of an SD card and it was plenty fast. Make sure you use a Class 10 UHS-I card, anything else will probably be too slow.

So .. any news of an emulator or something ?

This scene looks way too slow =/

Not till usb =/

Around two weeks ago Nikki posted a picture of a 5.5.1 IOSU exploit running, but quickly removed it because it wasn't her work. Since then, nothing.

Is there any way to load games off the SD card that doesn't involve the use of the Gamepad at all? I want to take my console to public settings to play Puyo Puyo Tetris, but I'd rather not have to lug around an expensive, important, and tedious to replace accessory if I don't have to.

Even if I have the gate set to run Loadiine automatically, I'm still prompted with a system message that says "From this point, you will need to use the Wii U GamePad." And if the Gamepad dies or loses a signal during gameplay, even in a game that doesn't require it, I get an error message telling me to reconnect the Gamepad that stays there until the Gamepad is reconnected.

u mean nintendo, who presumably took legal action to stop/prevent their console from getting further exploited
:|

Nah.

Honestly, though, I don't think Nintendo has done anything against Hykem. Maybe a C&D, sure, but they have done absolutely jack shit against people like Smealum, Plutoo or anyone involved in blowing the 3DS wide open. Nor with the original Wii, for that matter. What Hykem had had been had (woah!) by many other hackers/devs before. There is no reason for Nintendo to come down so hard on the guy when he never actually released anything. Also, there are other developers who have exploited the IOSU and who have had zero warning coming from Nintendo. And if it's of any indication, Sony hasn't done anything against Yifan Lu, xyzz and the rest of team Molecule for HENkaku. It doesn't seem that these companies are actively trying to stop homebrew devs and hackers from breaking their security, besides improving "stability" patch after patch.

If I had to bet, I'd put my money on something more personal. I wouldn't be surprised if someone from one of those very toxic "scene" sites targeted him (doxxed him, blackmailed him, or something in those lines) when he failed to release the exploit by the time he had promised.

Be as it may, I guess that it's better to let sleeping dogs lie now. He's out and the scene moves on... hopefully. It'd be better if we did the same.

Is 5.5.1 a new firmware or the version that's been around for a while now?

It's the latest and it's been out since January. 5.5.0 was released in August 2015... Nintendo has stopped caring about the Wii U's stability.

Let's see how much time they take to patch the IOSU exploit once it's released.

Thanks, will have to check if I'm on 5.5.0 or 5.5.1. Haven't switched my Wii U on in ages.

EDIT: I'm on 5.5.1U, woohoo.

I know this is probably a long shot since I haven't had much luck searching for it, but does anyone know of a way to convert dumped Wii U NES VC titles to a standard rom format for use in RetroArch or other emulators?

EDIT: Never mind, figured it out. I'm currently writing a program to automate the process (as well as for SNES VC titles).

I've finished the initial release of the Wii U VC Rom Extractor:

https://github.com/wheatevo/wiiu-vc-extractor

Not sure if there's any real demand for this, but it did help me extract all of the roms from my NES, SNES, and GBA Virtual Console dumps for use with RetroArch.

The usage is something like this:
Code:
WiiuVcExtractor <rpx_or_psb.m_file_from_ddd>

Kind of curious if it works with Super Mario Advance 4. I wonder how the e-reader levels are handled.

I've looked through the a few pages and didn't see anyone experiencing this. I'm trying to use DDD to dump one of my discs and I'm not quite sure I understand the instructions. What is the setup ip address of server application used for?

It doesn't match anything on my home network. Are the games dumped over the network and I need to set up a computer at that ip address with a writeable folder?

I hit A to install dumper and try to launch disc but it just opens up the mii maker and nothing else happens.

Any instructions would be appreciated.

edit: I tried setting it to the ip address of a computer on my network with a shared drive still nothing.

You need to run the command line on the computer that you're going to dump the disc to, it should tell you the IP, then you change the IP on your Wii U/DDD to the IP of the computer running the command line dumper program.

I can't seem to get any of my dumps working though... I can dump fine, I can boot into homebrew channel, I can run Loadiine, but when I select a game to play... nothing but a black screen that forces me to hard reboot. I must be doing something wrong? What are the exact steps from the moment you turn on your Wii U until you can run a game from SD?
