I'm pretty sure I saw the X-Files episode on this.

The full details are slightly less stereotypically scifi: 13 people are hospitalized and haven't been PROVEN to have anthrax, but the Russian Ministry of Agriculture is treating them as if they have it. It would be the first anthrax outbreak in the area since 1941 according to the chief state sanitary doctor of Russia.

Lab tests have confirmed that a reindeer died of anthrax. Scientists theorize that a reindeer weak from heat ate the thawed corpse of a DIFFERENT reindeer that died in 1941 and had been frozen all this time, and then infected the people. Or, some experts propose, a reindeer picked up anthrax from an abandoned cemetery where dead people are just put on top of the ground in wooden boxes.

Reindeer are being vaccinated and diesel has been delivered to the region to burn infected carcasses, though recent wildfires have made officials hesitant to do so.

Either way the vector of transmission is terrifying to consider! Dios mio.

All of these The Thing and Ice references make me really happy. The whole anthrax thing.. Not so much. The band rules, though.

A terror from time immemorial awakens from beneath the ancient ice to herald the end of mankind!

Oh... it's just seventy year-old anthrax. That's unfortunate, but not actually that big of a problem.

Wait hold up Reindeer are poisoning people now? Haha this is some straight up bizarro world shit. Behold the scourge of mankind: REINDEER!

Livingskeletons

If I pulled that off, would you die?
I wonder what else lies beneath the ice. I remember last year they uncovered a very well preserved baby woolly rhino.

Anthrax outbreaks can occure everywhere and anywhere. Same like the botulism bacteria it's already naturally "everyhwere" in the enviroment. it's spores are basicly the chuck norrises of germs and can survive over centuries in the soil.

afair france had a pretty big outbreak a couple of years ago and there are regulary cases where drug addicts die of anthrax contaminated heroin.

What a horror. After centuries of loving Reindeer as Santa's preferred method of transport, we now learn that they are the harbingers of humanity's end. We had a good run.

This also reminds me of Fortitude (on Sky last year). Pretty sure that involved some kind of unknown disease to appear from a Mammoths corpse found in the ice.
