Disney Infinity server shutdown announced

Just got the email with all the details.

Since announcing the discontinuation of production on Disney Infinity, the team has been exploring timelines for the closure of the game’s online versions and community features. The goal has been to offer extended access to these services, while also providing clear communication about what players can expect. It’s important to note that:

The console versions of Disney Infinity will continue to operate as usual with full access to figures and play sets only with the exception of community content features and online multiplayer

Until September 30, 2016, Community Content will still be available and players will be able to upload and download any of their favorite Toy Box creations.


As of today (July 29, 2016):

No in-game purchases can be made within the PC, Steam version of Disney Infinity 2.0, iOS, Google Android, Amazon Android and Apple TV versions of the game as this feature has now been removed

Players can continue to make in-game purchases within the Steam version of Disney Infinity 3.0.


As of September 30, 2016:

Players will no longer be able to log in to play the PC, iOS, Google Android and Amazon Android versions of Disney Infinity. These will no longer be available on the respective app stores

The Steam versions of Disney Infinity 2.0 & 3.0 will remain operational with the exception of all online services and community features as these will be discontinued

Apple TV versions of Disney Infinity will be removed from the App Store

The Disney Infinity Community team will no longer be reviewing or approving any new Toy Boxes that are submitted to Disney for all console, mobile and PC versions of the game.

However, when playing on any console, Apple TV or Windows 8/10 versions of the game, players can continue to download their favorite Toy Boxes from the Community Content section until March 3, 2017.


As of January 3, 2017

No in-game purchases can be made within the Windows 8/10 versions of the game as this feature will be removed.


As of March 3, 2017

Apple TV and Windows 8/10 versions will no longer be available, supported or playable

All Disney Infinity online services and community features for all versions will be discontinued


To learn more about which services of Disney Infinity are being removed or information related to each game version, visit the Closing FAQs located here http://help.disney.com/Disney-Infinity for additional information.

The Disney Infinity website will continue to be updated frequently prior to March 3, 2017 to provide the Disney Infinity community with news and status of the game across all platforms should the status change.

Jesus. This is just offensive. The community creations were really the only interesting thing about the game, and it's been 'outdated' for less than a year.

Wow, barely even a grace period for the servers to remain open. Shitty move for people who have invested tons of cash on this shit, especially considering DI became the most popular TTL game before it got shut down.

I'd say that Amiibo will be the next to go. Nintendo has already exhausted most of their big name characters on existing figures. Conversly, Skylanders is able to constantly create new characters, while lego seemingly has access to every IP in existence.

Pretty much how I'm feeling about this. I didn't spend as much as many people, but put a decent chunk of money and time into it. Lesson learned on Disney games.

I don't play Disney Infinity or any toys to life games but this is a super scummy thing to do for a game that expected players to invest a lot of money into.

It's sad that even the successful ones die. I'm sure the could have made money with a skeleton crew and just releasing figures for the next few years, but Disney just wants completely out of the space.

A lot of figures are less than $5, so I'm grabbing the last few I want.

amiibo do not have its own titular game, which is its curse-- and, in this particular case, its blessing.

I doubt amiibo is going to go anytime soon. They work in various different games.

This is sad new though. The Infinity 3 lineup looks great.

Disney is one of the most ruthless businesses in the...business. No charity - it's not like they're lacking goodwill as a brand. But man does that suck. Especially the unplayable games. I get weird looks for being "paranoid" about digital games. DI isn't a multiplayer only game - and it's not safe?

Even if this game made them a decent profit, they're after the big bucks. I'll never forgive them for cancelling Tron 3 :(

Am I reading that right: So you can't upload content after September, but you'll be able to download community creations through March 3rd?

The one thing I would wonder about would be the figures released later in the games life that required an update such as Baloo, Ant-Man, Black Panther, Nemo, etc.

I think the update to enable them is considered a patch and not DLC, but I'm not 100% sure. If those characters become unplayable on consoles that would be a big deal.

You can buy the Star Wars starter set for like $20 at Walmart - and I've seen the Star Wars playsets for cheap. They're actually pretty fun if you're a fan, so even with impending server death, a Star Wars game spanning all three periods for under $45 isn't bad.

Wonder how Activision is looking at something like this.

Their biggest competitor in toys-to-life is getting out because they didn't find it profitable enough.

Less competition but might be sign of lack of growth in the sector.

Sad for anyone who enjoyed the game of course. Games that require online elements to function generally always have poor fates.

That's usually not how that works, consumer protection is a thing.
I guess it all depends on what they promise in the description of the product.. It's also not like they went bankrupt and have to shut down the servers.

But on the other hand, if Disney has one thing on lock, it's lawyers.

Disgusting. Surely this game can't be hurting Disney's bank account that badly. Maybe it doesn't make as much money as they'd want it to but come on. The devs really enjoyed making this game. Parents and children enjoy it too. The figures are very well made, especially 3.0. I really wanted Kingdom Hearts for an Infinity 4.0

Amiibos was done right. They are not tied to a single game were if that game failed the concept fails.

They work as dlc so people arnt forced to buy them which is good. As a customer im more willing to buy something if i dont feel forced to.

The customer base didnt out grow the characters. People in there 30 still love nintendo, i cant say the same for disney. So adults are willing to buy amiibos to collect the figures.

Damn, my daughter is just starting to get the hang of gaming and I was planning on picking this up for her birthday in September. I guess I still will and just download whatever toy box levels I can.

The software did, but the marketing deals to get Marvel caused them to have to bend over backwards and capitulate to a ton of poison demands, like making characters that didn't sell (Yondu) and making more copies of some characters than the game itself (Hulk).

So the game did fine, fantastic even, but the store shelves were polluted with crap no one wanted. Heck, even now at my local Best Buy and Target, all that's fucking left on the pegs are SHITLOADS of Ultron and Spot (From the Good Dinosaur).

Disney saw it as a promotion machine (The Lone Ranger, etc.) but didn't actually think people wouldn't buy things they don't want.

A modern day version of killing the golden goose.

Amiibos don't sell for shit anymore. There's over 100 now and most are being sold at a huge discount. Look at the Animal Crossing mess.
