Great work OP, I still love these games and replay them from time to time.

Still don't know how to find the password to the last door aka Dr kirk

Pretty sure you never find the code, it's just that the style changes. The number pairs correspond to letters. With the G and F being what you should eliminate.

Great thread, OP.

We constantly need to remind ourselves and the community on how this is a very important IP amongst the best of Capcom. People often think that 3 is what killed the IP but in reality, their attempt at replicating the success of Bio2 in DC2 was the real beginning of the end for DC. I still can't believe, even today, a guy as reputed in the company and the industry like Kobayashi would even consider pitching a project like DC2.

Forget the spin-offs, they always have a dedicated playerbase (just like Gun Survivor was for Biohazard), but when you're taking the mainline entry into an entirely different direction, it's always risky, let alone contrasting to what Bio2 did. The result spoke clearly in sales and it wasn't just the Dreamcast numbers which gave a spike. Takumi by all means isn't a bad design/director and so are his team at CPS. This led to the inevitable fall of DC and the final nail in the coffin with 3.

Do note that this was a time when entire projects were completely renamed to new IP's with the new console generation playing a vital role in restructuring these projects, like the original pitch for Bio4 which Kamiya turned into DMC and Inafune + Takeuchi being busy with Onimusha (which was actually supposed to be another Biohazard spinoff set in the sengoku period) etc. They went on to try different pitches internally.

If you look at Onimusha as an IP alone it evolved pretty drastically in the same generation. Their whole idea was to cater to the west more than they have already. 1 & 2 being textbook pre-rendered movement w/ tank controls & dynamic camera angles per scene (there is a reason for this, both Oni 1 & 2 were in active development simultaneously), to the start of complete 3D worlds with camera control in Demon Siege & DoD with occasional dynamic camera - all that with mechanical upgrades in design upon EACH sequel. The only thing that DoD overdid were the accessories, and some hitbox fuckups with block issens. Onimusha, also as an IP was lucky to have had some of the best talent at Capcom at the time. Went from Takeuchi, Eshiro, Nakai & Kimura - all under Inafune & Ono. Kamiya even used a bug during a playtest of Warlords, which later turned out to be air juggles in DMC, one of the main backbones of DMC's mechanical depth in gameplay in the later games starting with 3.

The biggest mistake (or rather, a blessing in disguise) they did was to remove Team Little Devils from DMC2's development and Itsuno was unfairly blamed for that abomination, led by some other internal design/director. Itsuno joined in entirely late in development. Kamiya even addresses this in an interview or on twitter (LOL, I don't remember, sorry). It's like blaming Platinum Games and Saito Kenji if Konami released Metal Gear Solid: Rising done by their internal team instead of MGR, and we all blame on Saito for it's debacle. They tried mechanically and in game design with some new IP's like Chaos Legion (which tanked commercially) to find & fuel their flagship IP's. But all that paid off so much in DMC 3 & 4 and their SE's.

Biohazard went through a series of makeovers in itself from 3.5 to DMC to the hookman demo and finally the game. DC doesn't come in here, but REmake 2. The success of REmake 2 and timeframe of Pacific Rim 2 might serve as a perfect opportunity for a good pitch about a DC Remake. With right marketing, this IP has huge potential. Just hope that it doesn't end up exclusive to any platform, unless of course, there's absolutely nobody to fund it.

RE7 is in the same boat as DC2

Dino Crisis series total sales were at 4 million units before the release of Dino Crisis 3, so at most Dino Crisis 3 shipped 400,000 units worldwide.

Capcom had modest expectations since they planned to ship 580,000 units worldwide during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2004.

Edit: I took a look at FY2003/9 - FY2004/3 total Xbox software sales and at most Dino Crisis 3 shipped 250,000 units during the fiscal year. What a colossal flop!

Dino Crisis 2 is a much better and more interesting game than Dino Crisis 1.

Thanks for posting this. Where did you find it?

Interesting that Oni 3 and Outbreak #1 both exceeded projections, although barely in the latter case. I guess why we never saw any sequels to Oni 4 and File #2 because both underperformed.

It is from Capcom's IR site.

Actually Capcom wasn't happy with the performance of Onimusha 3 in North America. Also, I don't think it shipped 700,000 units in Japan (probably around 550,000).

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams was a flop, it missed Capcom's target of 1.3 million units by 50%.

I know about their IR page. I meant the archives. Sorry, I should have specified.

Now we know why Onimusha died. Oni 4 needed to sell almost twice as much as its predecessor, and ended up selling less than half. Also interesting that RE4 initially missed its target for PS2 by about 300k.

Click on IR Presentations Materials > Presentation Materials.

No, 700,000 (Onimusha 3) was for Japan only.

Any new Dino Crisis game would have feathered dinosaurs.

Fuck.

That.

Shit.

Nah, I'd actually like to see what could happen if they ever got a chance to use feathered dinos. Capcom's artists could probably make them look very much stylish, freaky, disturbing and/or frightening as they want.

Or at "worst", they'd end up with things that look like they could fit in Monster Hunter, too (or who knows, that might help in some markets!).

The only time we will get a new Dino Crisis game is if Jawmuncher will have a job at Capcom as a director and force everyone to make a new Dino Crisis game (hopefully with help with Shinji Mikami).

Onimusha and Dino Crisis franchise are the same, they are beloved by the community on the internet, but the company doesnt care about them anymore.

Well i bet they will start caring for Onimusha if Nioh becomes a success.

That's damned impressive. If I had any semblance of self-confidence left (after long term unemployment destroyed the majority of it and Gaf curb-stomped the bit that remained), I could have made a similar sized list of threads on Outrun, Vandal Hearts or stages in fighting games. In reality I have made none...on any topic.

That said, I do like dinosaurs (as my avatar might hint at) and Dino Crisis too, so best of luck to you Jawmuncher. May you get your wish in the end through sheer perserverance, just like Andy Dufresne with his endless stream of letters in Shawshank Redemption. Capcom is bound to listen at some point!

I wish DC2 had a Dreamcast Version. Loved playing it on my friends PS1.

Capcom needs to put both of them on Steam.

Updated with Dino Crisis sales info from Bruno MB. We're looking at 250,000 and less sales for DC3, with the rest of the games sharing in a 550,000 pool.

He takes his GAF gimmick extremely serious.

I feel I provide worthwhile content in my threads

TBH I never really cared for Dino Crisis, but I wish another would be made just for Jawmuncher's sake. I just want the breh to be happy!

I hope it happens some day.

I'm ok with them. Not preferred, but I wouldn't NOT play a DC game because of them. A big factor is just how they are presented. It's easy to make a feathered dinosaur look dumb, but they can look cool just as well.

It's scary sometimes, my family just bought a used car and they looked in the glove box and found a copy of Dino Crisis 2 which they gave to me (I've never played any of them). The first thing I thought? "Just imagine if I was Jawmuncher!" - thanks GAF :)

What would I do for another DC?

I remember when I hyped the purchase of DC1 back in the day. One day I bought it then.

On the next day at school my buddies were like: Did you get it????

And I was like: Yeaaaaah!!

DC1 was also the frst game where my parents lectured me for playing such a brutal videogame lol. They never did it before, and never did it again afterwards :lol

But yeah, 1 was great! Super strange game, but super great.

Loved 2 as well. It was a crazy ride. The shift in tone was surprising but nice. Enjoyed it a lot.

Dino Crisis 1 is my fave survival horror game by Capcom. It was very advanced with the bleeding, the enemy routines etc.

DC2 I enjoyed but it was more of a mercs game.

I even enjoyed DC3. Its not a good DC game at all and the setting is dumb, but the potential as a sci fi action game was there. Boosting around enemies and shotgunning them down was pretty cool, if only the camera wasn't so stupid.

Who else but Jawmuncher!!!

Fantastic work, man! This was really informative, I love threads like these! :D

I know everyone says it's shit and I don't doubt it, but I desperately want to play Dino Crisis 3. Dinosaurs in space? Come on. The fact that it's terrible only makes me want to play it more. Unless it's terrible in the sense that the gameplay is broken and it's literally shit, not just from a story perspective.

Capcom, please give us at least 1 more awesome Dino Crisis game. Take all the budgets from every upcoming RE spinoff and instead use them to fund a new Dino Crisis.

Awesome thread Jawmuncher!

The gameplay isn't broken but the camera is. Excruciatingly so. That coupled with the weak characters and story doesn't help.
Had the game played up its ridiculous concept and had a better camera it could of at least been ok.

Thanks everyone. Happy to see everyone liking all of this information in one place.

Ahhh shit. I can deal with (and sometimes even enjoy) shitty characters and story but if the camera is broken and garbage to the point where it affects the game that's a no-no. ):

I think the series issues is the same that Parasite Eve had: it's all over the map mechanics and gameplay wise.

If they rebooted it, it might play differently then any of the previous games, which could again alienate fans.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
I'm surprised Capcom didn't make a Dino Crisis x Resident Evil crossover of sorts back in its heyday.

But what does this all mean for DC4?

Definetly subscribed. Always like threads like this. Great Work.

You're one of this places real treasures Jawmuncher, and I for one thank you for keeping the Joy of Dino Crisis alive in our hearts.

Personally, I'm hoping the continued success of the more survival horror focused Resident Evil games and remastered, coupled with the increased popularity of Dinosaurs again after Jurassic World, will embolden Capcom to give the series another shot. It'd be a tragedy if we never saw this series again, someday in a glorious future.

Genuinely I hope one day we get a new DC game cause the Jawmuncher thread on that day would be glorious.

Yeah the guy might make a lot of threads, but if anything that screenshot of all the thread names proves to me the guy puts in effort and only makes a thread when theres a tidbit worth sharing - it's not a bunch of meaningless 'wouldn't it be great if???' threads.

More power to you, Jaw. Hope you get Dino Crisis 4 one day.
