One Analyst's Prediction: PS4 Slim to be announced in addition to the PS4 Neo at TGS

What i found ridiculous is Sony and SE still not announce PS4 custom edition for FFXV. The game is nearly two month to release but the hardware is nowhere to be seen. Maybe they are waiting to reveal new PS4 before this.

If you are getting a Neo mode for FFXV it won't be anytime soon. They had trouble with the vanilla version as it is.

Another thing that I don't understand is why people are insisting on the PS4K naming. It would be very dumb for Sony to communicate to consumers that this machine "might only work" with 4K.

I just hope Neo gets released this year. Although It doesnt seem like Sony would announce it in Sep and release it in Oct 2016.

Because they want to be selling the Neo!

Not like Microsoft. People buying the Slim are more likely not to buy the Scorpio unless they're super rich or super reckless with their money.

Sony doesn't care which console you buy/have so long as you are in the PlayStation family and they can sell you games while taking their licensing fee. The lower they can get the price of the entry level console, the more they will sell. Sony doesn't want to be selling the Neo any more than they wanted to leave the last generation. They only do/did so because gamers demanded a spec increase.

However there are a couple counterpoints to that idea that they want the PS4 to be the absolutely lowest price possible. First, Sony wants synergy with their other products. They want people to upgrade to 4K TVs so need to give them as many reasons to do so as possible. Having their entry level gaming/media console not support UHD doesn't fit that strategy. Second, they need to be competitive. The XB1 S @ $299 plays UHD content, the currently selling PS4 version needs to do so too.

To accomplish both of these goals Sony needs to modify the PS4 to be able to handle UHD, and to avoid confusion needs to make it distinct from the normal PS4. There will after all be normal PS4s still selling at the same time. Sony doesn't want people mistakenly buying a standard PS4 thinking they are getting UHD playback capability, so their new low end PS4 with UHD capability will have to be called something different.

The real issue for me would be launching 3 new HW products in the same year, counting PSVR, all competing for the same user dollars. It would be challenging to find a position for them all, but then again the production volume of PS4 Neo and especially PSVR may not be that high to make it a problem.

I use to think this, but the PSVR is going to sell out, so it is not really going to be competing with anything. Only the people who really really want one will be buying it.

As far as the Neo, as I mentioned above that it isn't competing with the PS4 either. Sony doesn't care which you buy. In fact, if you already have a PS4 they'd probably wish you used your money buying more games for it instead of the Neo. The Neo is there only because of the competition. Sony needs a product to compete against the Scorpio and PCs for those gamers who would be tempted to ditch the PlayStation platform for higher specs alternatives.

That is exactly what they have hinted at. Neo is being treated by Sony like a slim launch. The difference being with more power/performance.

PS2 slim Announce Sept '04, release Oct '04
PS3 slim Announce Aug 18 '09, release Sept 1 '09
PS3 super slim Announce Sept 19 '12, release 25 Sept '12

Interesting that these slims have always released in Sept/Oct....and that Neo games are to be ready for late Sept/early Oct.

cheaper PS4 Slim: $299

PS4K: $399
I also think they are going to have these prices.

They may even have a game bundled.

PSVR is released Oct 13, TGS is Sept 15-18 and Barcelona Games World (new event run by Sony and many other big publishers) is Oct 6-9.

It may be positive for Sony to release Neo and apply the price cut to the normal one the PSVR release day for all the people who may go to buy a PS4 that day. They go to the shop and find it's cheaper, and in addition to this there's a slighly more powerful version.

Andrew House mentioned they prefer the Apple way of announcing stuff saying "it's available now/tomorrow/next week" than the Scorpio way saying "it will be available in a year and a half", so I think they may announce it in Barcelona instead of in Tokio. Specially if they market Neo as a buffed slim than a brand new console.

Why shouldn't they have a cheap and a premium model? Just wondering why you said they should only be pushing Neo forward.

Their OG PS4 IS a cheap model. If you've seen their reports, they have been consistently lowering the cost of the OG PS4 for 3 years straight. That is why its going to get a price drop when NEO is revealed.

Mark my words. Sony with lock UHD output, BR drive, HDR and that other stuff behind a NEO purchase.

NEO will be their only upgraded 'model' that they will sell for PS4.

THat is my prediction, goodnight

Why would they release the slim if the adoption rate for PS4 is already so high? If you don't have one by now I don't think a smaller one is going to push you over the edge.

More so if people are trying to save money for one at the moment, why use that money on a PS4 with the knowledge that the PS4K is right around the corner?

Do you think Sony is going to detour from past strategies? They had a Slim every generation and it always adds even more interest regardless of how well the older model is selling. It is also a good time to redesign the hardware after a few years to make it more efficient.

If you click on it you go to the Sony PS4 Store where Netflix can be downloaded. The listed size of the Netflix APP is 26.2 MB while the actual size in the PS4 is 1.14 GB. Best guess is they are using the Netflix size post PS4 firmware 4.0 update which is expected when Sony publishes to Netflix the Southbridge APIs using Playready embedded.
Nope!

This is just about the easiest thing in the world to prove. I've never downloaded Netflix on my PS4 (just on my XB1), and when I did:

You're only off by a factor of 20, though!

Honest question. When was the last time something major was announced at TGS like a console or even a handheld? I don't see Sony making their big announcement there

I think Sony will release the Neo before the holiday for sure. Simply because they need a 4K bluray to compete with the Xbone S.

I think it will look essentially the same as the OG.

Go to the PS4 System storage Management and look under applications, Netflix is 1.14 GB and more telling the temporary Media Player is 617 MB. DLNA is about 2 MB, VLC media player is 28 MB so what is the extra size supporting? It's also self contained and does not use the ARM trustzone TEE and Codecs.

You are so concerned with trying to prove me wrong you don't get the points I am making.

That's possible, but that doesn't exclude new revision of standard PS4. Chances are Neo will have a new form-factor to differentiate it - and if that happens, it's it's very unlikely they would continue producing the old shell for standard PS4.

Presumably it's space reserved for caching. It reports over a gig for me as well, but I haven't opened the app since downloading it this afternoon, no updates have downloaded, etc.

That, or it's a gig-plus app that compresses down so spectacularly well that it's just 55 megs packed. I put my money on reserved space for caching.

Anything on a new controller? I've seen many ps4+extra controller in many stores and even a weird U4+controller bundle (the black one, not even the U4 style).

Seems like they are burning the stocks, but could also be that they are selling it like this because the XOne is as well.

So every app has it's own cache including the temporary DLNA media player at 617 MB? Cache is reserved memory not reserved space on the Hard Disk. Yes it's possible the Netflix app caches artwork but the DLNA/Media player doesn't do that so why is it 617 MB when it should be about 30 MB in size if it's using the OS stack. Best guess is it's nearly entirely self contained (about 130 MB) with padding to obscure critical routines; neither will be needed when it uses the ARM Trusted Execution Environment and embedded Playready DRM.

It is production price. It is often a Slim model to coincide with reduced chip size. They don't need to make it smaller after they reduce the chips, but it saves on plastic and shipping material anyway.

If they go down this road and release them both at the same time, I think it would be best for them to simply introduce it (the slim) as a PS4 sku refresh that is smaller but still just call it PS4. And keep the look similar to the current PS4.

And then emphasize that Neo is different with more capabilities, and make it look different...maybe with it launching in white to better distinguish it from PS4 refresh.
