NES Classic: CRT Mode and Pixel Perfect Mode.

So this website linked to a radio interview with a communication representative of Nintendo Canada (more precisely the Quebec representative of Nintendo of Canada) dating back from when the NES Classic Edition was announced.

One little piece of info that was talked about in the interview, which I don't think any Press Releases confirmed before, was that the NES Classic will come with a CRT and Pixel Perfect Mode.

Here's the translation from the website (which I can confirm is accurate, having listened to the interview myself.)

http://nintendoeverything.com/ninte...on-audience-different-display-modes-and-more/

“What is interesting is that we can play through HDMI, but there will be different modes of how we will see the screen – a mode simulating the retro aspect of our old CRT screens, there will be a mode which can be at the resolution of the modern screens in 4:3 format, and a pixel perfect mode which will display each pixel as a square, so people can have fun with this too.”

And here's the original interview, audio-only in French.

Good they're putting a decent amount of work into it. The NES visually has been kept alive by the emulation scene quite well, it's only fair to expect the same historical respect from Nintendo.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Well, that's refreshing. Will the CRT mode have true-to-life overscan?

I hope the CRT Mode is good. I've been spoiled by playing my Neo Geo/Genesis games in RetroArch, so something akin to what that can provide would be nice. Probably got my expectations too high tho....

Pixel Perfect mode is also really nice too. Clean presentation~

Glad to see they've learned from how badly they handled NES on Wii U. Glad to see Pixel Perfect as an option, as that's what I play SNES VC with on the 3DS. Interested to see how the CRT mode looks. I'm guessing scan lines plus some stretching to reproduce the look of a tube tv? Looking forward to it.

And I hope all these features and more are available on the NX's Virtual Console. :)

Sounds really cool and makes me much more interested in NES Classic. Been avoiding anything with "Virtual Console" attached to the name for reasons pretty much already stated but optimistic about this.

Sounds like everything that's needed. As long as the 3DS / Wii U dark filter is gone or can be turned off, it'll be perfect.

I am so bringing this to my parents for Thanksgiving and sitting on the floor to play Super Mario Bros. like back in the day.

Do the right things with the CRT filter. Make it look like a nice old RGB monitor.

You can't match enthusiast emulators but try not to let them run circles around you.

exciting news. Just let me pre-order nintendo please

please

This pre-order is becoming more elusive than a frank ocean LP

Why didn't I preorder one when I had the chance? Sounds awesome and I was never that interested in NES games on VC, so I barely have one... This will fix that.

I was being more realistic. :)

I know.

I just had to vent.

You know, if they gave us more display options, I'd be buying way more VC games. I don't even need a CRT filter, I just want to pick between stretched to 4:3 and pixel perfect modes.

Guess I might as well buy Bonk.

This is so great. I'm really excited for this thing.

How about updating the Wii U VC to support these features!

They should have done it three and a half years ago, but it's probably not worth their time and effort anymore, unfortunately.

Oh this is great news!

I hope they bring these features over to NX VC for all the emulators.

This, however, needs to happen and it probably will. One would assume the NES Classic will be the basis for future NES emulation from Nintendo.

It would make sense, given how many people have been complaining about the look of NES games (I vividly remember Kamiya complaining loudly about it on twitter^^). How it ended up this bad in the first place will remain a mystery, since it was never a problem on Wii VC or 3DS VC. But they improve every other VC platform with new features so I'm hopeful.

As I implied in my last post, they put some energy in the TG16 emu, so there's always hope.

But that's been out in Japan since forever.

Would pixel perfect mean a really tiny picutre on high resolution screen?

No, that would be silly. I'm definitely no expert but as I understand it just means the image doesn't get forcefully stretched to fill your screen but instead preserves the pixels accurately.

Someone with better knowledge can probably explain it properly.

This new information bodes well for future NES releases on NX. I remain hopeful that they will use this same method on NX. Now if only we can easily transfer our current Wii U VC library to NX then all will be well.

Actual hardware scaling and processing. Of course that would be too expensive. Shader based solution is fine but i would no expect very high quality end result.

They have to have hardware scaling to even display on most HDTVs...

Shaders can do a lot more than a pure hardware solution, with no quality problems...

The whole hardware processed thing is an interesting technical fad & marketing scam only. Today's computers are powerful enough to apply the same result as a hardware solution in less than 1ms... (You can't percieve that)
